The start was good but the end game content was like a broken record....
I'd say it was the set up at the start that broke the game.
Levelling speed was painful, severely harmed by the loss of xp caused by deaths. Buying back the xp was an exercise in self loathing. As soon as you set foot outside to try and recover some currency or level progress you would be repeatedly ganked, putting you even further back.
They tried to recover the situation by safe zones and reward adjustments, but by then the damage was done.

As a Lineage 2 player I’d say the leveling was very fast, money was easy to come by and having safe zones was a small boon to strictly pve players.
The real issue was that they weren’t up front in an easily understandable manner that while there were pve areas, pve players would have to deal with pvp.
On top of that, while this was an exceptionally easy game to level in, if one came from an actual Korean grinder, it seemed they wanted to cater to world of Warcraft players.
That game had faster leveling and more content because it was out longer. So World of Warcraft players were turned off.
Did you know that there original plan for flight was not the free flying areas that were in the game at launch but these air tubes that were to carry players from one area to another.
But when players got excited about flight they had to rethink things. I’m not clear if the abyss was part of that as I think that could have always been free flight.
Sadly, in my opinion, they created a real neat world but weren’t up to the task of developing with any real vision.
