Here's the thing @Scot the series like Korean series are wildly popular in Europe and Asia. Malaysians are huge fans. Same goes for Turkish shows there are fans. I watch Korean, Chinese and Japanese shows along with Polish, German, French, Icelandic series to name a few. They are very popular. The Danish series on the women politician Borgen was very good. There are so many great shows and if you don't follow them you won't realise which countries watch them. Don't go by what you think just go to the forums on these shows and then you will see how wildly popular they are in places you might think they never would be.
That is the beauty of having all these foreign language shows on Netflix. I lap them all up. I especially loved the shows from Iceland. The German show 'The Dark' was absolutely amazing but I totally needed a character chart to follow it and if you ask me right now if I even understood all of it I will have to confess I don't. Brilliant writing.
That is why I subscribed to Netflix. Also the translation of the Chinese shows are very poor on those sites that stream them which includes Youtube but on Netflix they get good translations. I was very upset with the translation of the 30 episode Chinese drama 3 Body Problem which was a far more faithful representation of the book until I found a better version on Viki. Chinese dramas can be totally mutilated and their meaning completely off if the translations are off and what is worse they are subtle elements of culture, poetry, literature that can only be translated well by a native speaker but this is true of any foreign language material. I appreciate the amount of money Netflix pays to get them done well and I am a big fan of watching any content from all the countries in the world.
For me Netflix is totally worth the money I pay. I only have 3 subs Netflix, Italian Sky which includes Paramount and Amazon Prime. I watch some shows on Disney at my cousin's but I really miss not having Hulu, Apple and luckily Sky gets HBO.

I was asking a question about how much TV shows from other regions were watched, not telling you all how it is. Scandinavian TV series doing the rounds around Europe is old hat, so I would assume if anything from here was picked up elsewhere those shows would be among them. Interesting to hear what you said about the other shows.
What are folks like on subtitles as opposed to translations? I do prefer a translation these days, but sometimes they are so bad I switch to the subtitles. When you are hearing Asian guys sounding like they all grew up in New York it can be a bit disjointing. But worse than that is just poor voice acting, that is even more crucial than the accents.
Oh no I meant subtitles. They aren't dubbed I was talking about subtitles but if you get good subtitles they will explain things in parenthesis for one to better understand a joke or reference which would be completely obscure without the proper context. This is what the poorer translations don't do, they don't give you the cultural significance or the joke in the subtlety of language.
I watch everything with subtitles not dubbed. Heaven forbid, I dislike dubs even for anime. I refuse to watch anime with English dubs it ruins everything for me especially the badly done ones.
I think it would be so much better if I could understand some Mandarin, Korean or Japanese but aside from a few words I cannot fathom any deep understanding of these languages. I do understand Malayalam and Tamil enough to watch them without subtitles but even then sometimes I am stumped and when the subtitles fail me yet again it really pisses me off. Nowadays they use AI translations that really are quite bad because they simply don't get the nuance of tone and really lose out on the proper dialogue. Those translation are absolutely horrid and no one should rely on them even for romantic dramas because some of those dramas have insanely funny dialogue that is completely lost through the stupid translations.
Anyway I am completely off topic sorry but I was simply trying to explain why I think the translations done on Netflix as far as subtitles go are very good because I have a great deal of experience with bad ones.
There is always things that don't travel well and one of them is humour. When one watches a dubbed show no matter how well the dubbing is done if the joke is completely peculiar to the original language it simply cannot be done well in a dubbed form. You need subtitles with explanation of the origin and context to get it. I also note that American shows that get ported and dubbed lose all the humour that is peculiar to the show and perhaps the slang or cultural significance but in some languages they simply change the joke. Catastrophic really as far as preserving the humour goes.
There's a lot of good qualities to the subscription model. It encourages trying out games you otherwise wouldn't. It makes wasting time on bad games sting less because there is no specific entry cost to that game. It gives shorter games a home, when most players otherwise wouldn't spend more than $10 on them.
And in general, it's just a really good deal for the player. If you weigh games at 50% sale cost, for example Gamepass pays itself off after like 6 games that year. And then there's the value of all the games you were able to freely determine weren't for you.
It's only bad for games you know you want to own - really long and/or really repeatable games. So those ones are worth buying even if you have a sub.

I think when it comes to scripting for the dubbing of humor you need someone who is not only excellent at both languages but also has a funny bone in tune with the original script writer. Thats not easy to find and I doubt AI can do that having seen its latest AI chat offerings which the video review was raving about, but I could still detect this was an AI due to the "stilted" way they talk.

Well demos are very common these days so I think the opportunity to try before you buy has never been better.
Steam and Epic give shorter games a home for a smaller price.
Yes, it is a great deal for the player, which is why it is so concerning, it is driving down price, which in turn drives down the money available to make the game. For the consumer there is a balance between affordability and excellence, we had games right across that spectrum before Passes started, passes are pushing the industry to the affordability side. Still if GP is not doing that well it may not have this impact down the line. We shall see.

Maybe it's a difference of what genres we're playing, but I don't see this alleged shift down in excellence in favor of affordability. I see the opposite.

Yup. That's the ultimate end. Same as streaming.
I know that eventually my $5 a month Gamepass Ultimate deals are going to disappear. And it will get jacked up over and over again, while competing platforms (EA Play, Ubisoft+, Amazon Luna) will start to get titles I want. And thus one sub becomes 2 which becomes 3...).
Right now though, I'm enjoying Gamepass for the value while I can.

"In it's infancy just like F2P a Pass system will not have much effect in the way I have descried on the industry as a whole"
To quote myself I agree with you as its early days yet and may not become as dominant as it would need to be to become a 'game changing' force. This is about prediction, if this did come to pass it would be as obvious as the effects of F2P were ten years down the line after F2P became predominant. Not much point in my posting this then.
"Yes really good F2P does exist, but overall B2P and subscription games are a lot better."
A good game is a good game regardless of the pricing choice......Just because you pay more for something does not automatically make it better.
Yeah, but it's been my experience in life as well as gaming you get what you pay for.
F2P is an "opportunity" to pay much more for a quality experience much like an a la carte restaurant.
Gimme the packaged deal with a fixed cost almost everytime.
It used to be that the subs gave you everything vs paying for certain things in a F2P.....THen that kind of changed....Games like WoW and some of the others introduced cash shops in addition to the subs....Then all of a sudden paying a sub wasnt such a great idea anymore....ALso many MMOs used to include content with your sub...then that changed as they started selling DLCs and expansions in addition to paying a sub.....
For some people, the sub model was cheaper, and for others the F2P model was much cheaper......One of the reasons why I dont like things like Game Pass are that we are just being overwhelmed with charges anymore. Whether it is gaming, Costco memberships, gym memberships, phone, Netflix, Streaming services, cable TV, just about everything in our lives now has a financial charge attached and very often it is a monthly recurring charge.
Everyone and their mother is going sub based even some guy making guides on the internet for games wants you to sub to see his guide.
The funny thing is subscription based games were phased out for F2P then they introduce battle pass and platform passes and other methods to get you to pay monthly or worse weekly like loot pet rental or inventory space rentals and then claim we no longer have sub games.
Hello! We do have sub games , they have just taken another form is all. Now you sub for pieces of the game. Aren't we all proud about how far we have come?
