PvP changes are always going to be divisive, especially when the community doesn't agree with the direction. This is the situation that Pearl Abyss finds itself in with Black Desert Online, as the PvP community seems to be up in arms over what they perceive as a diminishing scene.

Maybe they should just make a pve server and reset the other servers to be more like how PvP was when the game launched?

I believe in a karma system but making it horrendously punishing makes me think “why bother?”

The Karma system is really part of old south korean mmorpg game design, and i think it might be time to just be done with it; as it's not something that has (even in the early days) ever fostered anything remotely positive.

the phrase 'karma bombing' only exists because this system exists; it's a system that from my knowledge, only really worked as intended in its native south korean version; it was never developed with the intention to be used in exploitive ways, or a way to circumvent fighting over grind spots the way it has.

PvP servers and PvP instances feel more inline with how the vast majority of players wish to engage that content.

I had to laugh at the person who said the best content in BDO was the PVP. The PVP in BDO has always been horrendous. It was never balanced and spending massive amounts of money meant more than skill. PVP has always been terrible in BDO. There are far more people playing the PVE side of it too.

I first saw this sort of system in Asheron's Call, the one in BDO is more developed but its a very ill fitting way of doing PvP. If you can't have RvR then at least have an arena zone.

U speak of the node war changes still having to be tested so we cant be sure of how it will be. This info is not tru though, from what we saw on the kr streams of the node war there was bearly any pvp, just ppl sitting around a fort waiting for it to be over and even if there is pvp handfull of classes are straight up garbage in largescale that ppl are forced to rerol. This is why cannon, defends and anticannon roles where so good. It brought skill in the game cause u needed to know how to cannon, how to counter the cannon with your buildings / ppl and how to defend your full build base, all this skill has been removed with one file swoop. Also the fights are rng based on how long they are, it could be 10mins or it could be 60 (i am sorry but that is retarded). We as a community gave our (mostly negative) opinion about it and they released it. So instead of rethinking the idea al togheter they added a stupid pve buff as reward WITCH u dont even need to win for to get, u only need to die 100 times with the guild and u get the reward. Its nothing to do with pvp and will fill the node war scene with ppl that dont care for the pvp just want the dumb buff and they will be gone again leaving so many empty towers that pvp will not be needed to be done and everyone that actualy comes for pvp just takes a fort and be gone. Many ppl of my guild have already voiced there displeace and have quit the game, me included. It was the last bit propper pvp we had left and they had to ruin it.

This is absolutely true, but the main reason it's true is actually the Ability/Attack Animation and Activation data. There is no commitment or timing to the combat. The closest thing it ever had in that mechanical balancing was Wizards having long'ish cast timing on 2 or 3 spells. Otherwise every fight has always just been people teleporting around hoping to backstab each other because you have to guess where the other person will be facing if they're trying to block you. There's no "skill" involved in it, just APM cancel spam or picking the most Teleporty and I-Frame'y class and then winning with Attack Power you get by Paying $ to Enhance it

BDO main content have always been PvP, and PvE was the way to get better gear to do PvP, that's why PvE content is more simple and bland compared to other MMOs that focus more on it. Still, even with this reality, as the article mentioned, doesn't matter what type of MMO you play, for all of them the PvE/casual community will always be the majority of players, which for someone like me feels sad, why playing a game if you won't experience 100% of it, or at least, if you joined a game where the main content is PvP, stop complaining there's PvP in your PvE (PvE players back then understood this, nowadays not so much).

They're doing a decent job on PvP modes, improving Nodewars, adding new modes like Arena Of Solare or Guild League, but this doesn't fix the feels you get from playing an open world MMO focused on PvP. Back then, you went to a grind spot, you might had to fight someone and it could lead to fights or possible guild war after, leading to huge fights, maybe drama, etc... This are the best memories I have of this game, when I had the most fun, and I wasn't even that geared back then (I like to mention this because, one of the main no brain arguments from PvE players in this situation is saying that we only like it to fight weaker players). Basically the world felt alive, but what do we have now? People can grief your spot cause you can't kill them without easily becoming red karma and facing huge consequences for it, you can't declare war to the griefer's guild because they have to accept the war and even if all this wasn't in the game, we also have Marni's Realm now, which is a system that allows you to create an instanced version of a grind spot to be alone for an hour, so the world is just way emptier and boring.

As someone with 10k+ hours in the game I think open world pvp died when the 1% exp loss on no war pvp death was removed. It was the only thing preventing dying on purpose. Since that change there has not been a single reason to fight back.

BDO have been shitting on itself for so long now. They don't even cares if 4% population of oceania players leave when they moved server further away from them so let alone any change for pvp you guys demanded. The dev just don't cares about minority people or they cares so much for minority idiots that are streamer or in their korean feedback forum that often the loudest.

Game is dead anyway sooner or later and its already became irrelevant in Korea/Asia region.

This game would have been awesome except for the progression system in which you are basically RNG'd and can either buy your way out of it or spend an inordinate amount of time to progress.

Anything where you have % chance to upgrade items and have shop items to restore durability is a fail.

I absolutely loved the gameplay of the game but the enhancement system is for sheeple.

I remember the early days, when some griefer speed hacker was able to remain unkillable for about two weeks taking out anyone who rode by them and PA had a hard time keeping them banned from the game. It was a system exploit that had been there since it was in Korea, but apparently only westerners are PoS enough to find these lmao

Just because you havnt put the time in to learn timing, gaps and how to come out on top in PVP interactions doesnt mean it doesnt exist.

i've been playing the game for 6 years now and have consistantly punched up over 50gs for nearly all of it. before this latest change that added like 4 cadry rings worth of DR to all players, i was killing hard capped players comfortably in 1v1 on what is regarded as one of the worst 1v1 classes in the game. i couldnt do it without proper timeing, movement, and coordination. im on youtube, look it up and watch close, the CC's are very intentional.

the game takes practice, and skill to consistantly win, the game doesnt suck just because you are bad at it.

but because players like you dont have an aptitude twards the game, we got these changes and now i feel like i cant pvp at all. after guild decs were taken away, node wars nullified, the dr changes took away my 1v1. and aos is built on the premis that you need 3 people to take down one player, so you are at the mercy of your team and their ability to play the game, because you dont do enough damage to make enough difference on your own. its about as rng as node wars is at the moment.

games combat is legendary. you may not have enjoyed it, but due to all the changes that took place, now i cant either.

    thanks.

As a game studio we don't understand game studios not listening to their community.

We get it studios want to make a profit, but that's not everything. Focus on the important things like teaching your users, making an amazing user experience, making sure they have something to think about when they finished gaming at the end of the day. Many exceptional games actually teach people things that are useful in real life.
