All I can say is regardless of Koster's past glories he is also the main consultant behind the dismally disappointing, hot mess, gank fest that was Crowfall.
Main consultant is not big enough boss that he should be blamed for whole company failing. Even if Crowfall failed, we don't really know whether Koster's job as consultant was good or bad.
Raph has been replying to comments on the MassivelyOP article. In response to someone saying that the art style looks like a child's game, he said "We have a long way to go on visuals yet."
Once again, I don't think the art design is going to change drastically. The only time I've seen that is with Pantheon.
I highly doubt it's going to turn into this ...
or this ...
or this ...
That's why I feel Raph is being "disingenuous." Not to say he's trying to be sneaky but he's doing what all developers do, slightly sidestep the issue. But sure, I'd be pleasantly surprised if they went a completely different way than what they chose. Again, my taste doesn't suit all.

All I can say, is de-bug, de-bug, de-bug, and do is some more as your play testing! If I remember right SWG had over 2500 active bugs at one time that we had to play around.
As for PVP is fine if you have a repution system that means something. You can have both good and bad repution that affect your overall repution score.
The overall repution score should effect how NPCs and other treat you within the game. Have a bad repution the NPC may not want to trade with you or charge you much higher prices. Your repution may be so bad that no tradeperson NPC want anything to do with you, so you would have to find to go to the black market where they may want both arms, legs and head plus a horrible quest(s) before they will sell to you.
Also if repution is bad enough, area guards may prevent you from entering (town or city for one). If your repution is really bad, they may kill you on sight and that's it game over, you loose everything and hav to start a new toon. Have a nice day.
I think most people's fears about PvP are misplaced. Yes, there will be PvP, but this isn't a FFA PvP game, nor is it a PvP focused game in anyway. Itll simply have PvP in certain locations, with the possibility for the playerbase to open up or close down new locations if they choose to. But it sounds like the overwhelming majority of the game will be PvE.
Beyond that, my main fear is the combat mechanics. They've taken inspiration from 80s arcade games, pure point'n'shoot. This has the advantage of being extremely accessible, with the disadvantage that it's so shallow that you'll get bored of it very quickly.
I'm very much looking forwards to the creativity on offer through the terraforming and player cities side of things. But I know those sorts of projects don't last forever. I typically spend 50-150hrs on building projects (like a house in ARK, or a zoo in Planet Zoo) but then need a significant break before I get inspiration for the next project. If the combat is shallow and boring, will I stick around inbetween projects?

I think its time good old Raff had the epiphany that the brunt of those types of gamers, due to age, or responsibilities, or just other interests, have moved the fuck on from the MMORPG landscape. And have not been replaced with new blood. Much like the brunt of the gaming industry.
If he wants to make a small indie niche hard core PVP MMO I say have at it, I'm your huckleberry. However if he wants to draw in a large player base he needs to realize older PVPcentric players like myself are few and far between these days. And to quote yet another film, this aggression will not stand.
All Raph consulted on with Crowfall was the world economy, as far as I know.
There's no indication that he wants a PvP centric game. It looks like he's limiting it to battle zones, via requiring Players to take over a "world" and turn it into a PvP zone (with various options). That's the way I understand it, at least.
Also, in fairness to him, one "not so great game" doesn't mean his future projects will follow suit.
That's the problem with people, they can only look at your last thing and they judge mercilessly and with prejudice.
He very well might make an amazing game with his crew. Or not, time will tell.

Usually I enjoy the building of things like making boats or wagons to travel and trade in far off places , like in BDO that was what I enjoyed. Grow crops and sell them. Build houses and I am not so concerned about actually levelling unless I need it to get the things I want to make.
In Archeage I avoided the fully blown out war time areas when I traded my goods. I think if I get killed too much I will leave quite fast.
I am not sure how PvP will affect all of this. Have to wait and see.

This is such a great comment because it illustrates the complexity of the situation. This could be a full loot open pvp game, but still have a lot of systems and activities that are broadly appealing.
We could get into it over whether studios do this intentionally. We could lecture either side that they should just "not play it", but those miss the point.
Sometimes there aren't specific alternatives to a game. If there was one excellent beautiful thing about first gen MMOs, it was that they were fairly unique amongst each other. EQ was not Lineage was not UO was not AC. Sometimes people come across games that offer things that no other games offer quite the same way. They don't satisfy the experience.
This is why a PvX player ends up in a PvY game because there is no PvZ alternative. I just think that's a situation we could all be a lot more understanding about when telling the other side to get out of our game.

I like the art style and I think it looks decent. It's about the only thing I've read or heard about the "game" that I do like.
He put his name out there to sell his ideas. It seems fair game to me.
For once, I'd like to see one of these people make a good game first, and then start yapping afterwards. If you have to hype the "ice puddles" before the game exists, then something is afoot at the Circle-K.

Visuals will change but notice he does not say style or art or anything like that. I think he is referring to enhancing the visuals, not changing them entirely.
Yeah I can't imagine a complete graphics overhaul or anything like that.
Agreed, highly unlikely future updates will entirely change their approach, more realistic graphics will not be forthcoming.

I dont think anyone needs to tell anyone else to "get out of our game" but I also dont think anyone should go INTO a game and expect it to change to what THEY want. It's an insanely self-defeating mentality.

Well, I can find things he's linked to that are dead and gone with no problem. Finding any currently thriving and surviving successes that he's even minimally responsible for is another story entirely.

Yeah he straight up says this game isn't for people that want realistic graphics.
Graphics remind me of Free Realms. Seems like an odd dichotomy to have graphics that appear to be aimed at kids while the gameplay, I'm guessing, will be aimed at the older mmo crowd; i.e. people looking for SWG2.
I dont think anyone needs to tell anyone else to "get out of our game" but I also dont think anyone should go INTO a game and expect it to change to what THEY want. It's an insanely self-defeating mentality.
Some people call that customer feedback. Some companies listen to these people and are able to change the product to make money. Other companies learn from their competitors failures.
Apparently MMO devs dont know how to do this. They keep making the same PVP mmo's and flopping 1 after another. With more in the Queue it doesnt seem like it will stop either. The lemmings will keep hurling themselves right off that cliff.

Right so going into a Chinese restaurant and complaining they don’t have Pizza is customer feedback too. About as useful.

Not every game being created has you as the target demographic. That seems to make you uncomfortable.
I am a bit surprised to see so much focus on the PvP thing, when it's really not core to the game...
Anyway, on graphics -- our target is adults. But we also want optimistic, hopeful, and broad appeal.
If you do high realism, you run the risk of a) nobody being able to tell your game apart from others b) spending a fortune c) chasing away a broader audience who assumes that the highly realistic graphics means the game is only for hardcore players.
In our case, it also makes it harder to do some of the things we do with dynamic worlds.
But right now, we do have a mix of stuff that is far too stylized (and some stuff that is in the right ballpark), all the avatars are stand-ins still because the final customizable system isn't in yet, and there is a loooong way to go on lighting. In fact, lighting is as big an impact on the look as the style is, probably.
Anyway, stopped in to share this video which explains how the simulation works.
If you're interested, the game can be wishlisted on Steam now.

Other than Black Desert what game are you actually talking about? Mortal Online 2? Some other indy pvp game that never quite got it together as far as features or technical polish?
Because that's why they are failing.
I will offer that any game that has the polish and feature set of a AAA game will probably require a large player base and that might not happen.
Still ... Black Desert does have its fair share of players ...

I won't even go near a FFA PVP game unless its like Albion Online (and how it sounds Dune Awakening will be) where there is FFA zones. Even then it becomes a question of risk vs. reward and how much can I enjoy the game avoiding those zones if I so choose. But if I am in a group of good PVP'ers, I would be more likely to go out there. Maybe.
Why are people so afraid of losing stuff that doesn't matter? Part of the gameplay should be getting that stuff back, whether it's finding that person and killing them, or just running content again to get it. In SWG when my armour was shot, I just went and got it again. Some of the best fun I've ever had was in Dayz and you'd spend hours and days getting geared up, then you die and you have to start it again.... But it was ok because that was the fun part of the game.
It just has always weirded me out that people cling on to in game items that are totally meaningless.... Now if this game were on Steam and the items had real world value, then I could see people having a problem.
In fact Raph, use the Steam Marketplace and let's have a real world economy going! I want to sell all my loot for Steam Decks!
Saying that pixels in a game don't mean anything is like me saying pixels on your screen while examining a bank statement mean nothing. So if your bank account read $0.00 in pixels on your screen you'd be okay with calling the bank and them responding "Dude, chill, it's only pixels".
Some pixels represent a significant time investment. Other pixels represent necessary steps to get to new content.
I don't play games to simply blow 100s of hours of time - I'm usually working towards a goal and for goals in a game to mean anything at all the pixels that represent those goals must have some kind of value to the players.
It's okay to be new to video games, but maybe read up on the concept first before throwing ideas around.
The whole argument that "people are afraid" to lose there stuff misses the point completely.
It's simply not fun for a sizable portion of players. It breaks immersion and you no longer feel like you're playing a game.

Quite the opposite for me. Having no negative impact from dying breaks immersion.
We just had a heck of a time in the PvP zone in PaxDei and never even had a fight. We trekked into the zone to harvest a material called pure iron. It can be found in small amounts outside the zone, but is mainly sourced there. We went in a group of 4 and were geared. As we approached the quarry, we heard a pickaxe. We decided to shout out and make ourselves known. A friendly, if naked, fellow answered and we chatted a bit while we all mined. After a while we had a significant amount of ore on us. Enough to build our new Anvil which was our goal. We discussed if we should split it among us or have 1 person hold it all and try to run if engaged. We elected to keep the ore scattered. We we progressed we saw some armored folks coming down the road (we were mining and scanning in all directions as a result of ultimate paranoia). Once again I shouted out our intentions and after a tense moment or two caused by them not responding, they continued past us.
Now we had largely depleted the nodes in the quarry, but I spied a few more a short distance away. By this time we had triple the ore we had wanted, but as always, its hard to leave. So I scooted across the road and up the hill and started to mine the nodes. While scanning I saw a large group of armored folks running toward the quarry. I was able to tall my groupmates and they snuck out the back and down the road and we all slipped away. Untouched, and loot heavy. And made our way back home.
While we had no actual combat, it was some of the most tense (and absolute BEST) times we have had yet. It was the threat of losing what we had earned, plus our equipment which raised the stakes. Prior to that we spent about 2 hours slaughtering countless "Zebian" NPCs and collecting loot and special crafting recipes. It was fun, but no real risk involved. If we died we just came back and got our stuff. It wasn't nearly the fun we had in the PvP zone, even though we never had a single fight there.
Now I can totally get into a PvE game. But we have to absolutely break this concept that every game must tailor to every possible game style preference. You are right that a very big group of gamers hate the very concept that another player can attack and kill them in a game. But there are in fact countless game that they can hop into and never need to face PvP. Just like, despite the fact that burgers, pizza, and fried chicken are enjoyed by a huge percentage of Americans, it doesn't mean that every restaurant should sell burgers, pizza or fried chicken. Its OK to have a restaurant that sells just Chinese food. Or Greek Food. Or Indian Food. Even though those niches might not be quite as big.
In this very game you can most likely avoid PvP from everything we have just been told. But for some, the mere existence of a chance that some player run government might opt to allow PvP on a particular planet is too much.
So again, for those people, it's actually OK to play a different game that has zero PvP ever.
