To be fair, the devs had been working on this game for years before they opened a Kickstarter. From what I've seen, they were very transparent about their progress.

Personally, I consider asking for money with no equity in a project to be e-begging, but at least they had more to show than AoC, Pantheon, Greedmonger, Star Citizen, or most first gen Kickstarter MMOs when they started.
