Game in development - Beta Decay

This one looks very cool, cyberpunk style RPG. No idea how far along they are in development, but figured I'd share.

From the Steam page:

"beta decay is a dark, dystopian RPG with a low-poly aesthetic. Build spaceships, join factions, and fight for territory on voxel planets or in space. Be an engineer repairing starships, to a syndicate leader, executing raids deep within a labyrinthic neon city."

It looks and sounds interesting on paper. However from the videos it looks like they wrote things like "build spaceships and be an engineer" after they forgot they are an FPS game. What are they trying to be? Low-poly star citizen? That video made me think they are a doom or half life knock-off.

You watched one video and have some incorrect assumptions based on lack of information. Look closer.

The second or third video (it's a long one 15-16 mins) is what you should have watched. The game aims to be a much deeper world than "FPS Shooter" - perhaps I should have added more details about what has been released, rather than a snarky one-liner, apologies. Let me summarize what I've gathered. They are using UE5 coupled with low-poly assets and simple textures to make creating large scale cities and lots of assets load run smoothly. The ability to make massive, futuristic,  cyberpunk cities that load like Vice City running with a beefed up engine capable of generating whole worlds.

It's one to AT LEAST take a second look at.

It does seem to me they are trying to be both a FPS and a "builders" game. Which sounds great to me but as always it will all be down to the implementation.

"FPS" and "Building" sounds like a very strange mix of genres to me, but I hope they can pull it off.  I won't be playing though, as I'm just not interested in FPS games as a whole.  Good luck to them though.

I am really hoping the FPS part of the game is similar to how GTA is an FPS game if you want to make it one. It's also a living world with deep quests and characters, lots of side activities, car and house collecting. Sure, there is guns and shooting (from first person if you like that view) but I wouldn't call it an FPS.

I'll dig around some more later and try to post more info.

Features that make me think it will be more like a retro sci-fi survival RPG than FPS (copied from Steam)

Player Driven Star System and Economy
Trade products through physical shops on the streets to digital securities on the Centauri Exchange. Take on roles ranging from an engineer calibrating communication servers, to a faction leader executing territory raids on rival syndicates.

    Build Starships
Build spacecraft with complex sub-systems such as power grids, server networks, and life support systems to keep your crew alive in deep space. Players may go where they like, when they like, doing whatever they like.

    Rogue-Like Alpha Cen
Death is permanent. Eat, drink and sleep to keep your character alive. Practice caution and avoid unnecessary risks on foreign worlds where viruses, anomalies and creatures may reside.

    Territory
Join one of the three major factions in an endless fight for territorial control of key city districts.

    Game seems interesting
I hope someone else takes care of building cities for me I cant be bothered with that stuff but the rest seems fine to me

I can empathise with that as well.  I hate building games where every damn citizen has to be constantly watched and micromanaged.  They're supposedly intelligent beings who should be cooperating and working together using their own initiative.  In the past, when I tried games like this, it very quickly became apparent the games were just glorified spreadsheets.

Beta Decay might refer to how a game improves over time during its beta phase. It sounds like an exciting new game like Clash of Clans. Copy the best Clash of Clans bases, to improve their game, I’m curious to see how Beta Decay will develop and refine its gameplay. It’s always fun to watch a game grow and see how it shapes up over time. Looking forward to seeing what it has to offer.
