I would play UO if it got a new engine etc. But then again, the really screwed it up with Shroud of the Avatar.
The game itself wasn't that bad aside from some performance issues, but several decisions made leading up to it were such that public perception for it was crippled before it even got out of the gate. One of those involved selling deeds for player owned towns that were extremely expensive. His marketing stunt of selling his blood to partly fund it didn't go off well either. Garriott is no longer much involved with it.
A somewhat unique element of SotA is that it can be played offline, which if done gives you access to your choice of a supporting NPC to help you play through it. As such, even if the server fully shuts down the purchaser can still get use out of the game.
