It doesn't matter how a game is described. What matters is what it actually is. If ArcheAge Elements includes all the aspects traditionally associated with MMORPGs then it is one regardless of the label attached to it.
There are actual worlds out there that aren't just disposable action rpg clickfests in mmo clothing arguing semantics!
Enjoy your game!
We did but as soon as we had they looked for a bigger player base, first solo gamers then console and finally mobile. They have never been loyal to any player base and will dump the priorities of mobile players as soon as something bigger comes along. Crypto MMOs are likely the next in that sequence.
I dunno. Crypto games seem so far to be following the path of the 3D TV. The next big thing… that wasn’t .
Same with VR gaming actually.
At least so far.
Time will tell.
The difference is you don't need special equipment for Crypto, the driving force is the never ending push for new ways for studios to make more money from games. So crypto must come, my real concern is will crypto end up like F2P where players start arguging that you can't make a MMO these days without "Insert new money making method".
Years and years back we reached the point where players were making the F2P case for studios, players had bought into the studio dogma totally. If we get to that point crypto will end up in nearly every online game.
Not sure.
It’s not like “crypto” is free. You literally have to spend money. You have to, in many cases (like the Red Village game that our friend was pushing, have to get an ETH wallet, go to a “marketplace” buy your characters, pay “gas fees”…
Not saying it’s impossible… but so far the effort has been resisted for a few years. I also thought it was an inevitability… but now I think it’s more than likely not going to take over.
We shall see.

What if you could make crypto by grinding? A really tiny amount but enough to make it seem you are no longer "playing without making money". Then add everything else you have said for whales and dolphins and it is not far from what we have now. As you say I am unsure it will take over, but it will arrive and once it does other studios will want a piece of that pie.

Define Crypto. What is it and how do I get it and where does it go? Do I report this as income on my tax forms? US IRS guideline below:
All individuals filing U.S. Form 1040, 1040-SR, and 1040-NR must answer “Yes” or “No” to the digital asset question: “At any time during 2022, did you: (a) receive (as a reward, award, or payment for property or services); or (b) sell, exchange, gift, or otherwise dispose of a digital asset

I actually don't think that's especially pertinent now, though you would need a ETH wallet etc. Because people are not going to be declaring this income unless they make a mint which is unlikely, most in fact may have the opportunity to declare it as a loss!
Look at the "skin economy" that has existed in some MMOs for donkeys, are they paying tax? Now down the line what you are saying could be very relevant but I don't think this will deter players at crypto MMOs inception, it may stop it mushrooming mind you.

I'm simply pointing out that in the US, I must currently declare if I have received, earned, purchased any digital asset such as ETH.
They recently targeted hobby sellers on EBAY and anyone selling more than $600 in a year will have an official IRS tax Form 1099 listing those earnings.
Government will always follow the money. I think this is one of the main reasons that large companies have yet to really jump onto the bandwagon. It's the fear of intense regulations and scrutiny in other parts of their business models.
Do you think that XYZ games wants to start tracking and issuing tax documents? I really doubt it. Imagine the uproar when a an 11 year old is issued a IRS 1099 and the subsequent discussion around the profit the company made from that child's actions and whether or not that constituted some kind of child labor.
I am not saying it's impossible, but I really and truly believe it's an unlikely path we go down. I think companies have looked at this with very hungry eyes, but I think they see the potential pitfalls.

That must be a factor that deters them, but think about all the third world countries, players there will want in to anything that generates £ and $, will they get taxed? So crypto might get a foot in the door elsewhere before it comes here and that is exactly what F2P did.
