    I don't like those keys, and south facing LEDs limit the keycaps you can buy if you want to be able to actually see the character light up.

    This is very true. I personally would go for something opaque if I had built it myself. The south facing switches is for the keycap customizers. North facing ones don't always work with Cherry profile keycaps, which make up most of the big third party keycap sets.
