It definitely feels niche. And the term mmo is super loose in this game.

I had fun with it. Planned on playing for a few minutes and 3 hours passed by. Maybe you should be out if you want to call something you don't like steaming hot garbage. Orrrr! Just try a different game

Pretty sure it's the fact your skills reset after each chapter meaning starting at 0 each zone. Game doesn't respect your time.

Why do we expect games to “respect our time” and what does that really mean? It has become a cliche and watered down expression. If your skills reset each zone then that’s a feature of the game and part of their experience and challenge (for better or worse). If you are progressing in the game in whatever definition of progress the game has set for itself, then you are experiencing the game and not being disrespected. It’s not really possible for a game to be made to respect or disrespect time, it’s up to the players to know what games they can play that are rewarding for them within the time limits they have set for themselves. It’s up to each player to manage their own time and it is for them to respect themselves and their time enough to adhere to it.

I might not like the way this game is setup, but somebody does I’m sure. Just like many of us enjoyed the EverQuest grind, getting actually lost in Morrowind for hours or the 90+ hours of Dragon Quest 7. Games are ultimately created for a younger crowd and older players have always had to find ways around their schedule to play the more time intensive games they enjoyed, but there was a time when we didn’t feel the need to play x amount of games in a month or a year, and it was ok to lose yourself in a single game for 6 months out of the year and really dig in during that time when you could. We simply are losing the attention span for such experiences and need more instant gratification, not that I don’t struggle with this in areas of my life as much as the next person.

I love it. There is a lot of misinformation about progress resetting like the poster I quoted below. That’s not the case at all. Each zone has it’s own professions that you level. Think of them like jobs in ffxiv. In the first zone your combat profession is a guard. In the second it’s a scout. It’s two different jobs like in ffxiv.

I think what confuses people is that they can’t keep playing as guard in the next zone. They have to start as a scout. But the way it’s setup is that each zone has its own professions that you play as. But it’s not the type of game where you finish a zone and move on. A zone has a ton of leveling content, and you can go back to it.

Here is from the main dev https://x.com/AndrewCGower/status/1854284599767003621

But I guess this is what happens when someone actually comes up with a new idea. People whine and complain. All they know and want is more wow and korean mmo clones.

And btw this gane was only made by a team that had no more than 8 people working on it at a given time, proving you don’t need a massive team to make an mmo.

    This is total lie:

The reviews I read this one seemed to be the most common...Also if you learn fishing in first zone you may never be able to use it again... skills dont move to next zone....Sounds like they made a good effort but have some pretty serious game breaking issues, at least for us veteran MMO players.

Well I don’t agree with the “respect our time “ sentiment and you’re correct, a game like EverQuest didn’t bother with “respecting our time.” However, resetting all skills, if true, isn’t my cup of coffee. Sounds tedious.

That's not precisely how it works. You do not lose your skills, but each area has it own skill that serves as your profession in that location and determines your combat ability there.

You start in town and are employed as a guard. Any progression as a guard isn't lost, but is totally useless when in the next region you become a scout.

Any progression as a scout remains but only applies to that area. Should you decide to go back to town your guard ability applies once again.

So, it's sort of like classes in FFXIV, but each zone forces you to learn a new class from scratch that is only applicable to that zone.

So, it's quite different from the norm.

Played for 2-3 hours yesterday and had a surprising amount of fun. Woke up this morning thinking about it, I'd call that a good sign. Can't wait to continue testing. It feels fresh and oldschool at the same time and personally I like the skills per zone idea. So far I'm glad I gave it a try.

I am glad you posted this as I did some research last night and this is how I understand it. It depends on how much of a time sink it is but I am okay with it. If I am in a city maybe my skills are things like alchemy or blacksmithing. In the forest, maybe it should be foraging and lumbering. The question is what happens later on and what does the final set of skills look like. and the timesink and grind.

I'm oddly enjoying it and genuinely excited to see their update cycle and what they add as there is a lot of potential imo. It's also nice to not have a p2w/pay for a solution cash shop for once.

I recommend giving it a shot, there is currently a lot of misinformation regarding the reset system which thankfully a previous post as explained. Honestly I don't think the system should put you off trying it.

    In part:

Skills have almost no synergy with one another. Cooking just makes you feel like a short order cook, you walk outside to grab your order of supplies then prepare a dinner, get paid, repeat. You can't eat your own food and it does nothing for combat. Now combat, everything scales to your level so at no point do you ever feel like you've "Grown" stronger because things will always drop you to <30% HP. I know this is a byproduct of the auto heal at the end of a fight but it still doesn't feel like the gear or levels are doing anything besides "Yay I get to fight higher number monster". The gear is bleh and meh on top of all that. PS Combat is just an auto battler

He said the game will be B2P , where the new episodes will come out and players would buy episodes.

Then silently, not long before launch this has changed to Sub based ( although the sub is not high ) Still the game is evidently miniMMO/singleplayer RPG , and it was obviously made for episodic B2P content.

For all Andrew quotes , "We are not greedy" , "I did not want to make another MMO" , "I have enough money" - he really easily fallen to some acountant telling him "Man you can make much more money"

Auto heal at the end of combat is one of my least favorite RPG designs. It's used a lot in turn-based RPGs I play, especially some JRPG types. It gives the game play a very unrealistic arcade like feel.

Your progress is not being reset. It's not the same outcome at all. If your progress was reset that means you if went back to the first area (actually, its more accurate to call it an "act" or an "episode" rather than a zone), then you would have to level them again, which is not true.

Let me ask you, If you are at the shore fishing, does it matter if you have your woodcutter skill? No, because is not something that is relevant in that area. There are no trees to cut in the ocean.

Okay, not literally reset, just blocked because we entered a new region. I get that returning to an old zone enables access to them again.

This is an RPG. Why and in what world would I suddenly forget everything I know? Why lock skills that I already know away? Why can't I use things I learned previously to solve problems now? Why are those skills now totally irrelevant? It sounds so lame.

It really reeks of on rails dumbed down MMO game play that is used to tightly control progression. This has become a hallmark of live service games like MMOs and a big reason why I think so many are flailing. It certainly isn't appealing to me. Maybe it will find an audience, but unlikely with my online gaming group.

That's ok. It's fine to have different preferences. My issue is people saying it resets. I also think saying they get locked is a bit misleading. It implies that you could use those professions in the new area if they were unlocked, which is not the case. You cannot catch a fish from a pond with no fish.

The way that I look at it is that each area (each "episode") is functionally different. You do different tasks and solve different problems with different professions, and each area has a lot of leveling content to go back to for its professions.

In most other MMOs, the areas are aesthetically different. You do the same tasks throughout all areas, and the areas are finished quickly and you move on with little reason to return.
