This post is just out of curiosity - an insight into what game developers people appreciate the most.
We probrably all have our own personal favourites, but some companies are easily distinguishable by either continuous quality output, or a marked innovation in an particular gaming genre.
I'll start off by naming my two favourites. (You'll notice that they follow a similar trend, since I tend to only play games for the PC.)
i) Bioware
The company that single-handedly re-invented the CRPG and made them popular again. The Baldur's Gate series (1998-2001) (the sequel often regarded as on the of the best CPRG's ever) and Neverwinter Nights (2002-2005) place these guys firmly at the top of my list. The effort put into the forementioned titles is astounding, its unlikely there will be another DnD rpg offering the scope available in the BG series, as well as the replayability and longevity of NwN. Plus they were big-time FUN!
Other highlights include - MDK2, Star Wars KOTOR and the recent Jade Empire.
ii) Cyan
The developers that created one of the top selling computer games of all time, Myst (1993). One of the first to use the CD-Rom format, and subsequentially enforced pc owners to upgrade their machines. Also responsible for the sequel masterpiece, Riven (1997) which featured photo-realistic pre-rendered graphics and live actors. Some of the puzzles could leave you hanging for days (or months) on end, but the sense of immersion was then unparalleled.
Another revival of sorts; the point and click adventure game.
Other highlights include - Uru (Complete Chronicles) and the forthcoming Myst V - End of Ages.
On a sad note, the company JUST recently announced that they were officialy closing their production outpout due to the lack of funding, and of growing finaincial debt to publishers Ubisoft. A recent statement has been made here
Other personal favourite developers would include Bethesda,Troika Games and Valve.
It would be interesting to hear some of yours!
