don't fly in 0.0 - 0.4 space then starcyke.  plus you shouldn't bother with destroyers.  just stick to your frigate until you can use cruisers.

Yep. Just stay clear of 0.4 and below. I just got my caracal and it rocks. Would have been better if I had stuck to ratting in 0.5 with a destroyer or frigate. Could have gotten the caracal faster. Now making isk is 10x faster and safer.

    o/

    Good post.

I'm sick of reading all these posts of people that don't get it... they play the demo for a day, and say it sucks, and all they do is mine and a courier mission.

EvE NPE (New Player Experience) sucks.

Kudos to those that "get it".

Hopefully not many will get it for a bit longer so I can get further ahead.

    Nice post!

I played EVE for about 2 month, had the bad luck of ending up in a none PvP corp. And it got boring fast.

But after reading this I got the urge to give EVE another chance

also since i bought a merlin instead of a kestrel (so ratting and mission are easier) should i still try to pvp with it, or should i buy a kestrel for pvp

The big reason(s) to go kestrel:
    1) It's faster
    2) It has about the same defenses
    3) It has damage bonuses to kinetic missiles.  Merlin only has range bonuses.
    4) Missiles/Rockets are easier to use than Rails/Blasters, especially for a new player.  Missile skills generally train faster and have fewer pre-requisite "trees" to get to "the good stuff"
    5) It's generally a LOT cheaper

    However:
If you are willing to invest about 2x the time in training a Merlin is just as good (if not better) for frigate based PVP

Whats sick is the time you'd have to spend to refit everything running from station to station. And its like the whole social structure will start turning everyone into griefers. Its really a kill or be killed mmo. Not much leeway for mistakes. The last mistake was me trusting this guy to creep up on me while I was ratting and he simple had to blast my ass for shits and giggles. Sigh...and I was so close to a Caracal too... Think even if I get the 60 day trial, I will probably give it away. I don't want to turn a 2 year old griefer...

    1) Whenever you buy equipment to fit your ship if you're planning to PVP:  Buy 3 or 4 extra sets so you don't have to go get it again WHEN (not IF) you die.
    2) If you can afford it buy spare ships and just keep them stocked in your hangar.  Again saves time in the long run.
    3) Base out of a system close to 0.4 and lower.  If you have to fly 30 jumps to get to low-sec then you're going to hate this.
    4) Quit using destroyers.  They suck.  Period... End of Story.  A destroyer has a MUCH larger signature than a frigate (thus is much easier to hit for max dmg) A destroyer is much SLOWER than a frigate.  A destroyer has about the same armor/shield as a frigate....  Thus:  Destroyers suck.  Get a Frigate.  If you're Caldari you should use a Kestrel unless you really like the Merlin (which isn't bad but is a lot more difficult to train up to use well because rails are longer training arcs than missiles due to the trees in them).

Above is if you plan to PVP.  If you plan to PVE:
Same advice as above but stay the heck out of low sec space.  Stay .5 or higher and you won't get ganked.   Destroyers are OK for missions/ratting but, again, a frigate is a lot more cost efficent till you get into a cruiser.  I see that you have a Caracal now... easily my favorite cruiser in the game.  I like it even more than I like my Ferox :)

Well I read the entire original post and many of the others, and at this point I think I dont really care if the original post was faulty or not.  I dont even really like PvP, but suddenly I have the urge to pick up EVE again.  I tried the 14 day trial once, and I even bought an extra month of play, but then I stopped playing because everything felt too slow and I felt like I was always behind.

And after reading this thread I can now remember how I never tried any PvP at all, and how the only thing I remember that was even remotely fun in EVE is the time I went to a lower security zone and I was thinking about how I might get attacked.  That being the only rememberable part of my former EVE experience, I think I now realize that that is the exact part I should be aiming for, and I'm going to resubscribe for another month and give the game a try, PvP style this time.  image

    So... Thanks.

Does this post/guide still hold true after the release of Revelations 1?

Some of the mechanics have changed slightly, but in reality, yes it still holds true.  Space is pretty saturated with noobling pirates it seems though now days.

The guide is still good. Revelations character creation made things much better. You can now start with a character that has most or all of the needed skills. So training is no longer an issue.  Have fun. Be prepared to die.

The noobling pirate gang experience get's my official macaroni and paste star of approval.

Gang damp a bufuzzled RavenBear to poverty today!

Remember kids: Rifter gets a *free* extra mid.  The gang needs at least one ECM for potshotting the guy's sensors.  A damp or three to make the ECM painful.  And only one webber to keep him from getting to the gate.  As stated in the guide, don't forget to kill the drones and don't forget to remind your friends to bring ammo.

Great post to read. As soon as I get my Trial key I'll see if I think the game is fun. Can't wait!

    Update:

Just started playing and... WOW! What a load of info on screen! It makes me dizzy! I don't know how to play the game or what to do, but I think that's over when I did the tutorials...

Didn't know the learning curve for this game was so high. This is gonna be a long night.

    how original

i found the trial to be very tedious and complex to which i didn't have the pations for at the time.  2 hour tutorial really set me off.

    Hey everyone

Just signed up here, as I did with the EVE 14 day trial.

My friend and I were looking for some new MMORPG, being not quite satisfied with games such as DAoC, GW or WOW.

I had heard of EVE before, but never really took a look into it. Now my friend came up with this game out of nowhere and I feel myself kinda draged to this game, reminding me of good old Homeworld.

Now that I have done some reading, I start to get a grip on the how the game is played, but it’s all still a little obscure.

So yesterday evening I created a trial account and started my first toon. She’s Minmatar and started off as a business scholar. Sadly, my PC crashed every 15 minutes so I didn’t even complete the tutorial : Hope I gonna be able to fix this.

Anyway, I’m going to play together with my friend and am now wondering in what direction I should head. Problem is, he’s like chaotic evil and I’m more like lawful good. So of course he want’s to be a pirate and have a huuuuge bounty on him and being feared across the universe and the likes. Maybe I could bring him to play just a mercanary or even a bountyhunter.

I always liked playing supporters, buffing and healing allies and maybe disturbing the enemy a little. As for a living, the market and business is really appealing to me.

So, being the total newb I am, I need some advice on how I could build my toon up. Friend’s started out as some rogue-thingy (he likes having ultra-DPS ;D). So I’d have to be decent in combating/surviving and having some social skills to do the talk and selling some things on the market. Or maybe I really don’t know how this game runs and should just play it for two weeks now and come back again later :D

So you're saying EVE does not have any supporter-like ship set ups but only head-on fighters, packed with as many weapons and shields as they can possibly carry?

    Come on
  • daeandordaeandor Member UncommonPosts: 2,695
Yes there is an entire line of ships which would be considered support, they are called logistics ships in game.  They 'heal' shields, armor, boost eccm, boost tracking, boost sensors, etc.  Drones can also do all of the above, so you can increase your power.  Sadly, this profession is not very well implemented except when you get into extremely organized gangs or mission runners.  You don't find too many people that specialize in these skills as a primary skill set unless they are an alt.  Actually it is very much like the buffbots and dual-boxed toons in some of the more traditional fantasy mmorpgs.

For a true idea of the game do not bother to use their voice/emulated demo,  that computer voice is only to make you believe their is something more to Eve than there is....overall the game sucks and isn't worth playing......

Try the game at face value and you'll quickly realize its nothing more than a fancy chat screen/spreedsheet and poorly implemented ELITE wannabe....

The game is dead not, this game is good we make it and Romania Tv give it 5 goat heads, this is good rating for game.
