I'm waiting for a company to develop a game that allows for truly epic battles on my computer screen. Ultima O had the closest I've seen to this and that was some time ago. Diablo 2 went to 8 characters per game, allowing for skirmishes.
But now everyone is going 3D engine nuts with all these myopic-super close-ups. It;s like fighting in a bathroom or a box, very confining.
I say bring on the Kirasawa-style, Peter Jackson world ending Uber-battles, and then you will see diversification in combat. Even 20-on-20 combat would be interesting.
And if my character is smaller on screen, so be it. If I want to see how pretty I am, then I'll open a "close-up" window.
. . . .sigh. oh well-it doesn't seem like massive combat OR hardcore PVP are important to developers in the EQ clone-wars . . .too bad
Permadeath and environmental challenges are the next great step in the evolution of MMORPGs. Only through true adversity will one feel accomplished. Only in truly knowing you can die will true adversity present itself.

Its been done on more than UO.
DAOC-seen about 140 people [around 80 vs 60]
PS-500 people battles are common.

I feel your pain. Ever since I watched the LOTR movies, I want that on my computer. Planet Side came very close (I once participated in a 3 way fight that was, I kid you not, a 600 person continent fight), but that is a different type of combat.
I want to see arrows raining onto soldiers as foot soldiers charge. All with real players...
An impossible dream...
Some of the old Sieges in Shadowbane, where there were 2-4 guilds in power per server.
The thril of standing on your towns walls, seeing 100 players running at it and siege weapons flying... most fun i've had in a mmo
But now SB is a messed up POS so blah

daoc battles can be pretty epic, even with small groups. i never got far enough in shadowbane to get to guild battles, couldnt stand the game. perhaps i didnt give it a fair chance... and i definitely wanna try planetside.

If you want massavive battlels then why not play Age of mythology or something like that? I know its not an RPG but its as close to those LOTR battles as you can get.

2 games ive played with large scale battles werent mmorpgs at all. Neverwinter nights I played on this server with 2 rival towns, you join one when you create your character. Then at times there would be wars of up to 22 vs 22 between the towns.
The other is battlefield 1942. Up to 32 vs 32 in WW2 fps action.

DAoC used to have epic battles. Now it's just small groups of weaker classes being slaughtered by larger groups of inbalanced classes. People don't seem to have a brain when it comes to DAoC PVP, either.
Also, you'll rarely see people fighting how you imagine in DAoC, the servers are pretty dead RVR-wise.

I'm not into hundreds vs Hundreds. It's not as much fun as it sounds. Nothing is worse that getting killed 1st in a hundred vs hundred battle. Sure it's cool to see all the bodies laying around at the end, but effect you have in minimum. I think this is why so many complain about "zergs".
I like small surgical strikes. In smaller GvG battles it's a about skill. The larger the battle gets the less of a effect you can have on it. The more it becomes just a issue of numbers and luck.
