Vampire MMORPG

HocheteHochete Member CommonPosts: 1,210

im just wondering, has there or will there ever be a vampire based MMORPG?! i'd personally LOVE to see some kind of game, either set today or in the past (1700's or something) where the main basis of the game is an underworld of vampires, warewolves, vampire hunters and such. a bit like buffy or angel but in game form (but NOT a buffy or angel MMO). i just think this idea has been so overlooked by game makers. theres so much scope its unbeleivable, you could basically have it like vampire: the masquerade bloodlines but make it online, that game had some brilliant idea's which would so easily translate into an online version!

is it just me that longs for a gothic vampire/vampire hunter game?

This is also my dream game, a vampire vs warewolf vs slayer type mmorpg, that would be awesome, some of my previous posts have mentioned this but so far the only game i have played that is vampire vs slayer is Dark Eden, but that doesnt really pull its weight as the community is terrible and full of hackers/cheaters.

Ahh well, its nice to see that someone else is also interested in an MMORPG like this, I guess we will just have to wait and see, i'm sure it will be done eventually.

Vampire vs. Werewolves vs. Slayer would be one of the best backstory for an AWESOME pvp game.

Granted, this is merely conjecture on my part, but I'm speculating that White Wolf (makers of the Vampire pnp game) probably has ideas for an MMO based on their franchises (as they are not strangers to the video game market) and would love to get in on the genre, but are probably waiting to see how well DDO is recieved before committing to anything (DDO being based off of the licence of their main competitor, WotC).

Once again, this is a pure guess on my part. It just seems to be logical that they would be at least thinking of developing an MMO at some point, as they've had console and PC games based on their franchises in the past, and MMOs are being seen as the 'next big thing'...

I can't think of too many MMO companies I'd trust to do a White Wolf game justice... Mythic maybe.... possibly Sigil (depending on how Vanguard turns out)... Maybe CCP but they have never done anything but EVE... and I'm not a fan of RealTime skill systems so a bit leery of them.

MMOCenter.com's got a monster game coming out eventually:

Some of them crawl through the back alleys in the gaslight of 1800’s London, many lounge in the smoky public dens of Hong Kong, yet others hold positions of power and influence across the sea in New York, a few even steer the fate of thousands in Cairo, but they all have one thing in common: They’re monsters. Vampires, werewolves, mummies, witches, ghosts, demons, and just about everything else that’s been the subject of a classical horror movie is represented as a playable character in Creatures of the Night.

With the largely unaware herd of humanity all around them and every other breed of monster vying for survival and control, players will either join or abandon their own kind to exist. Alliances will be formed, betrayals will be frequent, and meddling humans are always stumbling onto what they cannot understand or be allowed to discern. One thing is certain: The world isn’t big enough for all the monsters in it.

Uh... sorry mankind, I'm gonna have to go with the vampire. Or maybe the ghost... unlimited HP, I'd assume.

I'd like to see a vamp game as well!

I like the idea of vamp vs werewolf vs slayer, but I think I'd like to see it set more in the dark ages.  I like the thought of a vamp in full plate armor ala Vlad Dracul wielding a mighty longsword and duking it out with a werewolf swinging a massive battle axe.  Imagine being a slayer laying Siege to a vamp fortress.  Or a werewolf waiting in the woods to ambush some unsuspecting soul.  Better yet, a vamp prowling a tiny village to feed on peasants.  The possibilities are endless.

maybe this will hold you until a full mmo is developed. or, you can play some of the old castlevania games.

Ya, and it's not like there is no audience for this type of game. Just google (or whateversearchengineyouprefer) Vampire RPG, and you come up with quite allot of sites dedicated to the subject.

I've wanted to see a vampire mmo ever since I played Morrowind (yeah I know.. SHADDAP) and my character changed from human to this dark creature with white eyes.. at first sight of my characters appearance I thought "woah, this is freaky-cool"... but Im a weirdo so.... image

You can't approach things from gimmicky angles. If a person were to create a vampire MMO they would need to take the time necessary to build a world worth living in.

Type Seed Game into your search engine. Go to the game's website and learn about it. It may be the best game you've continued to ignore.

Yes, and the same would be true for any MMO unless it's your 1st person shooter type game. See my ^ previous post that leads to another thread on the dev forum. image

I was writing out a long drawn out post about what would make a good vamp game. But truth of the matter is. It would lose the mystique, the magic; because the MMORPG industry at the moment is too shallow.

How could you make a MMOG game like Vampire the Masquerade, that makes you feel special as a vampire, or a werewolf?

To keep that dark, gritty feel, to have the underworld, the mystery? And not have vamp's crawling all around the city in broad nightlight feeding off every poor sap they come across?

The industry is just too shallow to do a MMORPG revolving around supernatural creatures like vamps, or werewolves.

Because if everyones a vamp, it doesn't feel like you're really a vamp. It's like hero's in MMOG's now adays: There are none, because everyone acts like one. There are no hero's in a world full of hero's, just as there would be no "einsteins" if everyone was an einstein. It's cutting out of the norm, and rising above, that gives us that sense of "einsteins" "hero's", or the mysterious, vampire.

You need 1. A deterrent to NOT be a vampire. And for only the very hardcore and dedicated to wield the power of a vampire, without ending up fubared before they can have their first feeding.

    2. A VERY human world, with tons of people picking non-violent professions, going about their business like the real world does. And rarely seeing a vampire, unless they're very lucky, or unlucky.

When everyones a vamp slayer, a werewolf, or a vampire: Then it just wouldn't be as grand, as pictured.

Yes you're right. The only possible solution I could think of would be to make an mmo with hundreds of different characters, races, classes ect... to chose from. Only then would it seem special. You would have to have a VERY diverse character world. Not impossible but the cost of making such a game is probably not something anyone is going to ever attempt.

Wow, absolutely fabulous post!image Maybe the way to have the mystique kept that I can think of is make the Vamp Slayer, Werewolf, Vampire class require some sort of unlocking that requires tons of hours to do. Not even nessecarily through a (long)quest but maybe through subscribtion time. For example, my starting profession is a bartender and I need to do this for so many hours before I get turned/chosen/choose to become what I am to be or I have to get so many people drunk before this happens. Or it could just be an absolutely random thing not determined by time or by quest.

I know these ideas are pretty terrible and I am sure others have better ideas but how the hell would you keep the mystique of any of those 3 lifestyles? Finwe is correct in that it might not be possible to make this type of game.

Think of COH/COV everyone is a superhero or supervillain, in EQ2 everyone is either Freeport or Qeynos' champion. If a vamp mmorpg came out everyone would be slayer/werewolf/vampire and not be special.

I just wanted to copy & paste this post I did in the Dev's Corner.

Here's the concept. The world, dark, mysterious, dangerous. A 1100's world setting topped with a gothic feeling. More of an adult theme.

Your character starts out human. No levels

Character creation must be so you can make your character look totally unique. A crafting system. Give the character options such as joining a local army which would involve quests to do so ect, run off to explore the world on there own, or jump into a crafting trade.

Now imagine your character goes off to do some exploring. stumbles across a cave. A very dark cave.. upon venturing in you're met by a pair of glowing eyes.. then darkness..

You awaken in the village you started in a little shaken but seem to be fine.. until days later you notice changes. You're getting stronger,  light is starting to bother you and you have an unatural craving... One day you're met by a stranger (another player) who takes you in to explain what is happening to you, and also tells you there is a way to reverse it.. if they desire. If they don't they will surley be shunned by the humans and have to live in darkness, and if they do they will have to adept to thier new life.

Yes, that person just happend to bump into a vampire in that cave, but this world would not only involve vampires. Also warewolves and witches.. which would all have very unique characters in thier worlds from the humans.

You would be capable of building upon any of the characters making them stronger, even staying a human, becoming a knight, ect... vampire hunter, warewolf hunter...

Being a witch would obviously be a little different.. you'd have to learn spells through books or other methods, and people might not even know you are one untill a certian point where you would be required to wear certian items to protect yourself from your own spell, and have in your posesssion some not so acceptable items such as body parts to cast some spells.

Im adding more to this thread after considering how i would like to see pvp in this game, where you could take part of it or not.. The pvp would be the battle between good and evil (duh) and humans represent the good and the non-humans evil obviously.

The serious pvp would take place on the plains of hell where the battle between heaven and hell takes place.  You may get sent after your character reaches a certian amount of power. You would be sent either by a priest or blood ritual. Your character on the plains of hell would totally depend on how powerful your surface character is, and would decide on what type of angel or demon you will end up fighting as, and as I said before you can also play the game without ever taking part in pvp by staying on the surface however, you may be required to venture there for certian items, quests ect.. do get a stronger surface character and fight the stronger npc's on the surface.

    Okay! Flames On! image

I really dont think it'd be THAT hard to keep it like you say, dark and gritty, where the general feel of the game is an 'underworld' of vampires, slayers and warewolves. you could simply have different 'areas' for the 3 races to exist. a bit like realms in DAoC, you could have perhaps a huge forest region for warewolves, an underground network for vampires, and perhaps towns for vampire hunters.

you could then give each race the ability to travel into eachothers 'zones', however of course it'd be increadibly dangerous for a vampire to wander into a town, as it would be increadibly dangerous for a warewolf to wander into an underground network. incentives could then be put in place to encourage people to hunt eachother, vampires could get bonus's for murdering innocents in towns, vampire hunters could be given experience for protecting innocents in towns, and warewolves could get experience for massacres in towns.

one thing i think should be avoided is the lightening up of the vampire genre as was seen in vampire: the masquerade. now, i only played Bloodlines, which was good fun, but i HATED the idea that i was peanalized for murdering innocent people, for christ sake thats what vampires are FOR! i think if a serious vamp MMO is to be released it HAS to stick to the gruesome feel of the genre, even if it means making it an 18 certificate (actually i think that'd be a brilliant selling point).

im getting sick and tired of the same warrior and wizzard, ogre and elf fantasy MMO's, its really time for something darker and more sinister!

I think what would be best is a world where vampires are a race amoung many. Each with strengths and weaknesses. Humans, Vampires, Werewolfs, and maybe Daywalkers.

World event system with epic battles between races. Loose associations between Vamps and Werewolfs. Even looser association between Humans and Daywalkers.

What I worry about in this game is that it might be too 'dark' (graphically speaking) and you might not be able to appreciate the art work. Because of this, a lot of work would be needed on dynamic lighting (torches, flashlights, etc) in order to appreciate the game visually.
