I wonder if this means that there is a good chance that we will see a revamp in many DVD movies. Namely I am thinking of films like the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Schnidler's List, Pearl Harbor and any other films that had to be released on multiple disks due to their length.
It's a minor inconvenience at best but I would LOVE to be able to watch my LOTR trilogy without having to get up and change disks 60% of the way through the movie. I've not really heard much in the way of news about this yet though. In fact I've heard more about Blu-Ray and it's uses with console games and the like.
Anyone hear anything about this or have links to any good info?

Well, you know how you feel when you wait for an MMO to come out and when it does you feel like you've paid to play it's beta test for another 6-9 months before anything even thinks of working the way it should? Being a network engineer you feel that way about anything Microsoft puts out."

it can work for a few things. like LOTR, but what would be coolers is if you could get allof the buffy, angel, etc on one disk per season.
but then again if you scratch one of those disks you would be screwed....

I don't really see the point in it. Is it so hard to just go and change the disk? I mean, it could be pretty useful when you're watching a movie with your girlfriend or something and don't want to be disturbed but other than that, it's pretty useless imo.
Not really. Everytime you let the motor open up the Disk tray on your DVD player is one less time it will open. I am an avid supporter or ANYTHING that saves wear and tear on hardware. Personally, I wish more DVD players were like the model of stereo CD players when you push down to pop the top ( though those drives do have a higher tendancy to spin a disk out of balance ).
With what Verg said it WOULD be really nice not having to put in several disks time after time after every few episodes of your favourite series. Not to mention for an Ecological standpoint that's a hell of a lot less waste if you can cram 3.5 DVDs worth onto 1. There are really a lot of good reasons as to why it would be useful. Of course, if you were FORCED to buy your DVD collection all over again that would suck. But having the option for multi-disk movies/series would be really nice.

Blu-ray vs HD DVD = "Bull in a china shop" vs "3000 pound gorilla"??
Both are going to cause problems for you and your collection and they are going to do whatever they want without much concern for you. Both are going to require that you get new equipment as todays DVD players and standard TV's aren't set-up for this new media. If you dont want to buy a new media player, they are going to create media that is dual sided which will have next-gen content on one side and standard player content on the other (ex. BD/DVD combo 25GB on one side and 8.5 GB on the other. Costs of the combo discs will be at the basic disc level of 30% above the cost of the new standard BD (Blu-ray discs). Above and beyond that is this slightly annoying matter, which equipment are you going to get??
Blu-ray's starting line up - Walt Disney (Home Video division), Buena Vista Home Entertainment, 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures, Universal Music and Lions Gate, among others....
HD DVD's starting line up - Microsoft, Paramount, Universal, New Line Cinema, Intel, Warner Bros, among others.....
As you see unless Toshiba and Sony/Pioneer decide to come together to create a universal format there are going to be a lot of difficulties for consumers in the future. Your movies might come out on a single disc, but what format and what equipment are you going to have?
This year should be interesting to see where the chips fall in regards to the next-gen media and players. Well at least money will start flowing again in the DVD industry, which I happen to be an indirect part of.

Hrm...I hate to say it but I am going to have whatever equipment that little guy walking out of Best Buy at night without anyone around him has :P
Er...I mean....I dunno.
