Poll: Untitled Cartoon Network MMO?

verdantrexverdantrex Member UncommonPosts: 100

As far as I know, MMORPG.com just broke the news in this article:

http://www.mmorpg.com/showFeature.cfm/loadFeature/526

...that one of the SWG developers is now working on a MMO for Cartoon Network, although the title wasn't given.  Now, it's possible this could be a generic title like Disney's ToonTown, but I think it's more likely (and more fun) to guess that it might be a MMO version of one of their popular TV shows.

So... which one?

I think the #1 contender is probably SpongeBob Squarepants, just because of its popularity and ease of marketing/cash flow. A SpongeBob game would probably be a lot like ToonTown. Innocuous and harmless.

And then there's all the Adult Swim hits... one that stands out to me is Sealab 2021.  Can you imagine how awesome it would be if they made a M-rated "Seed"-style MMO where you're one of the many labbies populating Pod 6, etc?  Like Seed, it wouldn't have much combat, but instead would involve you "RPing" with the show's characters, and other players, in bizarre, kinky plots.  I'd SO be there.

And of course there other possibilities... vote!

Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Dragonball Z, The Family Guy, Gundam Seed, Inuyasha, Sealab 2021, Space Ghost, SpongeBob SquarePants

Dagnabit... I meant to include Futurama... and I can't edit the poll (and besides that, it maxed out at 10 choices).

I'd probably replace Space Ghost with Futurama... not real easy to imagine how Space Ghost could be a MMO, but Futurama is PERFECT, really.  Oh well, write it in if you want. : )

Futurama - most likely out, would probably be hearing something from groening about it. who knows, also the idea is sort of awkward.
ATHF - Don't think this would make a good MMORPG, most of these cartoons are meant to be funny... game translation would be my bet very poor.
DBZ - Again someone else owns the rights.
Family Guy - Ok I have no idea how this would work, these cartoons would make better singleplayer adventure games then anything else, mmorpg would be a poor choice to make these into
Gundam/Inuyasha/Spongebob- again owned by someone else.

Also nowhere in that article does it state that he is working on an MMORPG for Cartoon Network, he could not give any details. It could be a MMO or could not be an MMO.

Dragonball Z, Fullmetal Alchemist, Gundam Seed, and Inuyasha are Japanese imports; Cartoon Network doesn't have any rights to them other than to broadcast episodes. In particular, Bandai will sell the rights to make a Gundam MMORPG approximately the same time that hell freezes over. Spongebob Squarepants isn't even a CN show, it's Nickelodeon, for Christ's sake.

I highly doubt the MMO would be anything from adult swim. It just doesn't seem like something they would do.

    Siehst du mich
    Erkennst du mich
    Ganz tief in meinem Herz
ist noch ein Platz f?r dich
    Ich suche dich
    Ich sehne mich
nach dem was ich geliebt hab
    doch ich find es nicht

Ok, you seem to be misinformed. Cartoon Network/Turner Broadcasting has access to a large base of cartoons, but the only ones you listed were from Adult Swim.

While AS cartoons COULD be the basis, I highly doubt they would be. Most likely an MMO would come from one of their "Cartoon Cartoon" shows; PPG, Ed Edd n Eddy, or Dexter's Lab. My money's on Ed Edd n Eddy personally, as the whole premise of the show is trying to make money, but I could be wrong.

Well, yeah admittedly I don't know much about "kid" cartoons anymore (I'm in my late 30s, if that's an excuse...) except Adult Swim, really... I did scroll through the non-AS section of CN's website but I didn't really recognize any of the titles (and didn't notice that SpongeBob *wasn't* listed, oops :).  When I read that article, I mostly just thought Adult Swim and Sealab 2021... it was only when I was halfway through the poll that it occurred to me that they show kid cartoons too.

Well, it *is* known that they are developing a Sealab 2021 game, but I never heard anything about what form it would take.

While I love Adult Swim, there's hardly anything there to make an MMO with.

I do take offense to the "kids" cartoons comment. If you actually watched Ed Edd and Eddy or even Dexter's Lab, you'd see a LOT of stuff in there that's not directed at kids (i.e. in an episode of Dexter's Lab they do a sort of tribute to the beetles, and in PPG they did a whole episode dedicated to spoofing the beetles). Cartoons aren't "just for kids" but rather another medium in which to express creativity.

I'm 23 and am proud to say I find more enjoyment in "kid's cartoons" and anime than in "CSI". Mock me if you will, but I'm hardly alone. TV for me anyways is a chance for me to turn OFF my brain and unwind, rather than something to get me motivated and thinking. But that's off topic.

Just because cartoon network plays shows, doesn't mean they own the rights to them they just own the rights to play them.

    Family Guy
    Futurama
    Full Metal Alch.
    Inuyasha
Cowboy Bebop (now there's one for an MMO if anyone made a cartoon one)
    DBZ
and well pretty much anything that's not a Cartoon Cartoon (if any of you remember which ones were which) and I think ATHF & Sealab is owned by Cartoon Network.

Well, that's a good starting list SnaKey, but let me also remind you that Hanna-Barbera is owned by Turner as well. That opens up a LOT more IPs, but nothing that's great.
