I've been wondering how an MMO like this game can stay in business without a subscription fee. How do they keep the money coming in?
Not saying I don't like it or anything

Maybe they will just make us buy the game via game stores or something like that, I mean they do have Blizzard Programmers working on this game, so maybe they suggested that idea :P. I don't know though how they could run the game without getting any revenue.
lol GAILE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! educate these people!
Right first off they will be getting money from people buying the game and if they sell the amount Blizzard sold of D2 then they'll have money coming out of their ears and their bowned to sell that much.
Then after the main release they'll get more money from seling expansion packs every 6-9 months and this will just keep the game running and the Dev Team happy.
Now your bowned to mention Bandwith now one of the founders of ArenaNet was the guy who basicly invented Battle.Net and they have designed Guild Wars to take up like zero bandwith compared to other MMO's which have a hell of alot of bandwith so that's taking out like most of the cost.
Also ArenaNet have said that the game will run very smoolthy off Dial-Up my only guess is that the Net (data) code is very very very very very small.
Right any questions?

Yea that's what I figured, no monthly fee but we just buy it via the gamestore, I can live with that. And the good thing is instead of 8 player games, we will have just one world, yay .
Ya, thanks for the info. I like the idea of no subscription fees

Remember Guild Wars is subscription fees free only in NA so far.
They will likely use different economy model in other continents.
My guess is ArenaNet will use the existing NCSoft infrastructure for other countries.
For example, in S. Korea, Taiwan or China, there are tens of thousands PC Baangs scattered around the whole nation. NCSoft generate big portion of their revenu from these PC centers rather than from individual household subscription. People in these countries prefer to come to these LAN center and pay for hours they are playing.
Considering titles like Starcraft, Warcraft3 generated more than half of their revenus from these countries alone - you probably heard that Starcraft is still national game in country like S. Korea - the same will be planned for Guild Wars.
S. Korean dies for competitive games like Starcraft, Warcraft 3, it suites their culture. The same will go for Guild Wars.
I bet N. Korea would like to play Nuclear War Online lol thats funny is so many ways lol.
If you guys still have questions about it you can always e-mail Gaile, i forgot the address but its in the community section on the main site.

Hi, all,
Let me try to explain the "no monthly fee" policy. We've mentioned it in a few interviews, but it's great to have the opportunity to say it straight out here:
No monthly subscription fee. Anywhere.
No sponsors.
No hidden fees.
No advertising.
Guild Wars was conceived from Day One to be a great game with no monthly fee. Our team has a -lot- of experience in games and networking, and we built the technology and infrastructure that allows us to deliver the best online experience without having to ask the users to pay a monthly subscription charge. But beyond establishing the technology that allows us to do this is designing a game that appeals to a very broad audience, and then releasing expansion packs on a regular basis. You are never forced to purchase an expansion pack, but we think you'll want to, after having played Guild Wars. You see, by producing a steady stream of high-quality content that our customers would want to buy and play, we will have an ongoing stream of revenue to help us provide quality games and excellent service to our customers.
Hope that answers the question, and thanks for asking about this, we know it's a question on many minds.

Hi Gaile nice to see you here and hope you enjoy your "new" job Your diabloii.net got me first interested in online games...
Anyway I wish you and the team good luck and I'll continue to watch out for Guild Wars and hope you soon will come out with some info on the game itself, as it seems for now to be a very promising title for the future...

GaileGray I have some questions !
You guys have no forum at your site ? Are you gonne put 1 online in the future for the fans ?
When steaming the new content at the background of the game , is it tolled how bigg the content is and how are you gonne do this ? if there are changes in the game like fixing a glitch in a part of the map ?
you need to dl this patch and install it not ? but if you are in the game dling will it be patched while playing and don't you get any lagg while steaming ?
PS: also keep us up to date about the beta
Hi, sir-anima,
You're right; we do not have an official forum connected with www.guildwars.com. At this time, it's not in our plan to introduce forums because we are really happy with the support of sites like this one and we're more in the business of making games than building forums. But you tell me -- do you think that a development company needs to have forums, or can the fansite community do just as well by offering boards to their members?
Downloading takes place often, streaming in sort of "behind the scenes" when you're visiting with friends in an outpost, or updating as you load the quest. When you join the game, you get a nice splash screen with a d/l bar, and a message tells you how many files are being updated. It doesn't give you a size in bytes, no, but the update process is so fast that I doubt you can count to 10 before you have the complete update on your computer.
The installation is automatic. The update downloads, installs, and you're off. At this time, you don't download while you're in a mission, but only after you've left it. If there is an update to the game while you're in a mission, you get a message that this is so when you return to the outpost, and you then go get the update.
No news on the beta yet, but I'll let ya know!

To give Gaile a answer 'bout forums. Sometimes i think it does have a point to dev. companies to have their own forum. It might somehow serve as a collective source for the community. Sometimes it might feel like you have to chase around on 3 or 4 different forums just to get the information you looking for (nothing speciffic to GW).
Now nothing says that you can let a fan-community to do the forum job for you, if you think thats easier. Like official fansites and such... GW has.. two (2) of those and nothing says that that solution works less good then having a forum of your own. And of course, one thing doesen't have to exclude the other, but I like forums on dev. sites, somehow it feels more... close.
-But that's just my personal veiw
