Dark World Online (Vampires and werewolves, oh my!)

I haven't seen this mentioned here yet, so here goes.... the developers of Horizons: Empire of Istaria are working on a vampires/werewolves MMO set in a modern day fantasy setting, called "Dark World Online"

http://pc.ign.com/articles/705/705709p1.html

To me, this feels like a reaction to the void in the MMO world because White Wolf Games has never licensed their GREAT World of Darkness property for one.  WoD is probably the single best concept for a MMO that hasn't been done yet... but now the Horizons people are apparently going to fix that by doing something very similar with Dark World Online.

PS I know this is the 2nd game of this sort in development, the first being from the "Chronicle" MMOCenter people... but for some reason, I put a little more stock in Dark World Online.  I guess because Horizons is a proven (if rapidly aging) MMO and we've yet to see what The Chronicle will be.

The only thing that Horizon's proved is that mismanagement can take a decent game and lead it backward if anywhere. Thanks for the warning.

I think they'll be busy being sued by White Wolf in the near future.

I'd honestly support any production company that would be willing to take a serious look at making a quality game for this genre. But of course, their lies the problem.

I only bairly hesitate to say that this would probably be one of the thinnest line's to walk in terms of pleasing an audience and finding a market. It would certainly be a gutsy move but I really don't know whether the Horizons clan could pull it off.

Interesting heads up though Verdan, thanks.

Okay, so you'd much rather rely on a company that you know has a horrible track record rather than an up-and-coming independent development studio that has a laundry list of investors.  Ironically, which is the reason that Horizons had so many problems and actually had to create a proxy corporation to keep the game alive.

I would much rather place my hope in an unproven company that can go either way rather than banking on a company that's already dodged bankruptcy and underhandedly chased away their former lead dev.  Then again, maybe that's just the booze talking ....

I won't touch anything by the creators of Horizons.  They've proven to be pretty incompetent beyond all stretches of imagination.

    In War - Victory.
    In Peace - Vigilance.
    In Death - Sacrifice.

I think an early industrial, Victorian era setting would be better for a game of that sort.  But I guess that's just because I grew up with those older vampire movies in which vampires were more the creepy, scary, supernatural villians as opposed to the modern vampire movies where they are all flashy, kung-foo fighters.

My suggestion to Hz Devs would be to get more than 10k subscribers to their first game before even considering an expansion or second title....They would have been better off NOT telling people they were designing it.
