First off I have played EVE for the past several years, in fact most of the time I have spent in MMORPGs has been spent playing EVE. In EVE loosing a ship can be a demoralizing loss or a drop in the ocean depending on your wallet size. Sadly I fall into the first category. Why do I mention EVE? Well way back when I beta tested PlanetSide and I kept asking myself what is the point I can spend and hour or two locking a continent just to go to dinner and come back and find it over run again. But through EVE I have recently come to the conclusion that games are there to have fun with, not to spend online hours at a time to sit in a safe spot. While I will not leave EVE for PlanetSide I find it is just the fill in that instant action void I have been feeling lately.
So I signed up for a reserve account about a week ago, and within a day hit the very low experience cap for reservists. I enjoyed my time. Played NC and Terran, I feel VS are a bit overpowered but oh well. But, the point is I had fun and ultimately wanted to try out a BFR. I looked at the prices for the game and said what the hell for $20 I can keep myself entertained for a month and if I get bored with it after that then I am only out a little bit of cash. So I bought the game and started working my way to BFR in the caves, just for the Devs to remove the dang things for the 3 year anniversarry. Well I'm not sure here but aren't you supposed to reward your faithfull at a time like this instead of punishing them by taking things away. I dunno, perhaps a decent story line would help instead of just, the core has hacked us OMG or maybe they have some big secret plan to release new stuff once the event is over. All I know is it better only last a week, or less.
So in conclusion, PlanetSide is a fun game, if you want to conquer a virtual world then this isn't the game for you. Everything is way too balanced to allow that to happen. But, if you are looking for an entertaining game with loads of instant action, then this is the game for you. My one major complaint is that it hard locks my machine at least twice a night. I.E. my machine freezes and the only thing to do is power down and restart. Any one else have this problem or know a work around? I'm guessing I need more RAM or need to lower graphic settings or something. But, it always locks right as I am about to go into combat, grrr...
On a scale from 1-5:
Action: 5
Sound: 5
Graphics: 3 not bad for being 3 years old.
Stability: 4
Balance: 4
Story: ha

The lockups that you are having may be related to outdated video card drivers. What card do you have?
Ive experienced strange lockups myself (would happen once per day or two) but that hasnt happend in a while. I upgraded my vidcard mobo and CPU so its hard to say what specifically kinda almost fixed the problem heh... Only PS locks u up like that?
Try searching threads on official PS forums.. they have some nice info there. maybe that will help. Also, try changing your sound card in the game options (i changed it to miles 3d sound or something like that, not sure how and if this helps but.. you never know).
About the latest event.. I personally dont like it much becuase it takes too long to "complete" and i dont like sitting without a vehicle for long. This event would be great if it were no longer then 2-3 days. But, its been a week already i think. And now the servers are down crap

I updated all my drivers and gave it a go, but ran into the same problem. So I read up on the low res sounds, I have a gig of memory, but figured meh couldn't hurt. Downloaded, enabled, restarted planetside, tried again and froze after a bit. Restarted and enjoyed several hours of freeze free play, plus I managed to click exit without freezing (another issue I had been having). So for the first time since downloading the trial I managed to play and exit the game without freezing or having to alt+tab out of the game and closing the game. So well see how it goes tonight.

Glad the low rez sounds helped... And you can try using different drivers. When you launch the game don't select your character, leave the character and server BLANK then hit play. It'll take you to the server select screen. Go to OPTIONS and then to sound options. Try the different options there (there are a ton, and you'll probably crash the game alot finding the right one for you, MILES is a good one. I'm using Direct3D Sound (something like that)...
Good luck.

Hmm you could try knocking the other settings down and upping your view distance. Turn flora off... trust me, it's not worth the purty graphics to get blown up by mines you can't see in the grass even when you do detect them LOL... never did understand that one. Why anyone would turn flora on in PS is beyond me. I love how nice the graphics are at max settings but if you throw them to max you're actually at a dissadvantage... LOL!!!!
Or you could just sink $60 or so into a new video card. You can get a 6000 series NVIDIA (more than enough horses) pretty cheap now that the 7000's are out.
