When it seemed like it was going to require me to give them one of my Credit card numbers, "In case I want to keep playing after the trial period", I just opted out of it.  It sounded like a "I have to opt out of it or I will be automatically be billed"........

Sorry, they lost me forever with that.

    Oh don't be silly. :)

You can get a trial account without a credit card, in the registration
form choose Free Trial Account. When it asks for a payment method simply choose
PayByCash (PayPal) - you don't even need
a paypal account. Additionally even if you use a credit card you can still
cancel the trial period at ANY time to avoid being  automatically charged - but
if you feel up to it sometime later you can still re-subscribe...and continue
    where you left off.

However there is a huge patch coming up this Monday and the servers will
be down for four whole days : http://www.ryzom.com/news/archive/2006/06/09/big-4-days-patch-next-week

But lots of good features coming up that will help newcomers a lot. Also I
heard that there will be a special trial offer coming up too so feel free to get
an account anytime but I recommend registering on Friday 17th.

     Anyhow have fun.

    Saga of Ryzom is honorable.

Their game is the most hardcore game you will ever see, soo hardcore it make Vanguard look like the kindergarden.

I will not play it, but I can tell you, it is nice if you are in this logic.  As for the billing, you can trust them, you can cancel right after...but I would recommend waiting two days before canceling, just like I would recommend for ANY game, waiting two days to cancel is a sure way to reduce potential risks.

It's quite usual really. Anarchy Online has done the same thing and it's a few generations older :P people still play it and haven't been scammed, but it's your credit card of course so do what you please.

Sorry to get ironic, but LOL.

    So Amazon is a scam?
    EBay is a Scam?
Every Online Shop that sells things via credit card is a scam?
Every Game that uses Credit Cards as  an option of Age veryfication (WoW and Guildwars included) is a Scam?
    Bummer... Scammers everywhere.
    Talk about paranoid.
Sorry Man, but as a regular player I can asure you just as those above are no scammers, SoR isn´t so too.

But hey, do as you please

No, you don't understand.  They should not say: you can cancel.  What they should do is if you like, you can turn on credit card billing.  Have you ever experience credit card fraud?  It can be a pain to deal with.

It is completely standard practice for MMOs to ask for a credit card. If this was a scam don't you think they'd still exist? If they were stealing people's money and falsely billing them, don't you think there'd be news about it?

This is a lame excuse to not try out a game.

I would think twice giving away my creditcard number, but I'm probably just old. I'm afraid I might forget to opt-out. However, this is a non-issue since it is possible to choose pay-by-cash (or something, haven't tried it) and never leave your CC.

Then, I am a 8 month Ryzom player and Nevrax's billing procedure is very nice and sends a mail one or two days before they make a withdrawal so you wont forget it.

Hope to see you on Atys, wjrasmussen!

Select Pay-By-Cash. It won't ask for any kind of payment information.

I had concerns simmilar with yours... but decided to give it a try anyway as I was desperate.

To my surprise, they are dealing with it very graciously - they send me 2 emails, one half-way into the trial and the other 1 day before trial was due to expire - warning about the deadline and providing link to the opt-out page.

However, at that time I was so hooked that I didn't even think about opting out...

As others have said, if you're not comfortable giving your credit card info for a trail, in the case of Ryzom at least you just need to read all the information presented and be aware of the various options. ;)  I'm about to enter my 8th month as a Ryzom customer and still haven't gotten around to switching over to paying by CC.

This page lets you create a new game account, or manage an existing one.

    Create a new account

If you are a new player, you can create your account here:

    Regular Account
A regular account allows you to play the game indefinitely by paying a subscription
each month. If you have boxed copy of the game, or if you have
purchased the game online, this is the type of account you should
select. You will have to enter a valid serial number (CD-Key) to complete the creation of your account and credit it with 1 month or more (according to the CD-Key).

    Free Trial Account

A free trial account allows you to play the game:
    • Forever (no time limit before paying)
    • Without XP limit (except for the mobs you'll be able to find)
    • Without entering a credit card number to create the trial account
    • Only on Ruins of Silan (access is restricted to the newcomers' island).

To have access to the mainland, you have to convert your trial account
into a paying account. You can then continue playing The Saga of Ryzom
for only $ 14.95 (£ 8.49 or € 12.90), and your account will be credited
    with 1 extra month.

In case you unsubscribe, your account - character(s), stats, and community - will be kept for at least 90 days so that you can continue to play later.
