What is the use of side quests?

Are they there just for the hell of it? Why bother if it just levels you up if the cap is just at 20? Don't give me "For gold" either because I just started and got to level 8 with 5 plat .. Is there any reason at all? Just to annoy you? Or waste time? Does it effect the main storyline at all?

Thank in advance for you input.

One of the main reasons is to unlock skills. Your alternative is to purchase all of them from a trainer, but the price quickly reaches 1 plat per skill and that gets expensive.

In Prophecies most of the side quests give you skills (for free).

In Factions they give high XP, which gives you more "skill points" which enables you to buy "standard" skills or signets of capture (for grabbing "elite" skills) from the skill trainers.

And remember, this is an RPG, so they also accomplish storytelling :)

Most what the above poster said.  However, in GW quests are optional.  A player doesn't need to do them to advance, unlike in other games where the grind is only barely bearable while questing.
