Familiarity or challenge?

katriellkatriell Member UncommonPosts: 977

Do you prefer to RP a character that is familiar, comfortable, maybe only human and not races that are harder to identify with, same gender as yourself, etc? Or do you prefer to challenge yourself and RP a character with a very different personality, maybe a character that believes and/or does things you wouldn't do or haven't done yourself?

Personally, I try to challenge myself to roleplay unfamiliar things, such as experiences I've never had or beliefs I wouldn't adopt. Inevitably though, some part of my own personality finds its way into each of my characters. Curiosity is one trait that all but one of my characters share. So, basically, I love challenges in RP but it doesn't always work out as different/strange as I'd hoped. xD

I usually go for a challenge, but there are some things I just don't like doing.  For one thing, I am female, so I always want to roleplay a female character.  But when it comes to personalities, I like to switch it up.

I'll also develop my character based on my knowledge of the game.  Essentially, if I know a lot of the lore, I can make someone with a more meaningful history and more involvement in the world, whereas if I'm uncomfortable with the lore, the dumber the easier  though in some games - like World of Warcraft - I "studied" to develop a character history.

Like you, most of my characters are curious, but I have a character who believes she's so blessed and is so sure of herself that curiosity is beneath her

I always give myself a challenge whether I'm roleplaying on a board or in a game. My avatar's personality depends on the game/theme, race, and attributes. I love to roleplay Sci-Fi, mostly. I tend to roleplay male avatars and I give them a bit of my personality, but a lot comes from what my avatar makes of himself.

Personally I think its better to have more then one race other then human because it gives pro's and beginners a chance to use diffrent classes other then human which everyone is familar with
