How big is advertisement in UI?

nandasithunandasithu Member Posts: 9

Just wondering. They say there will be advertisements during game play in the UI, right? What if the advertisement takes half or 3/4 of screen and we only see the game in small window  ? Then, they will ask PAY to remove the advertisement.

Imagine, in the middle of PvP fight, *flash* advertisement comes *PEPSI!!!!* .....woop......oh look my character is dead.

Well it varies, you can completely turn off the Ads if you want to like David said, but then you dont get an exp bonus, then you have the option of having them on the startup and other loading screens for a small exp bonus and then you can also have them in game which gives an even bigger bonus.

They will only be displayed in the UI so not actually smack bang in the middle of your screen.

I find the whole concept of advertising in an mmog to be degrading to the industry.  Some ppl actually think of mmogs as art.  Why taint that art with cheap ads for things we likely already use?  If I wanted to get bombarded with advertisments, I'd turn on the tv or open up a web browser.  Hell,I could just walk outside to get the same affect.  Never once have I seen an ad that was shown in the middle of somthing that interested me and thought of it as anything except an annoyance.  I've never thought, "oh hey! I think I want to buy that for interrupting my entertainment."

I know this is true, but i'd rather hav advertising in game than having to pay a 15$ monthly fee anyday.

I think some people missed the point with this topic. The game is going to be totally free, the ad's are a way for the team to fund themselfs to pay for the game etc BUT you CAN turn the ad's off anyway, you just wont get an exp boost if you turn them off, so all these people who are against ads in MMORPG's can just turn them off in the game anyway.

    No big deal.

If they're not already planning for it, I'd like to see an option to pay a monthly subscription and get the full experience bonus without any advertisements. If the game's entertaining enough for me to play regularly, a monthly subscription wouldn't bother me at all; having to choose between advertisements or experience "penalties" (which is how it'll be perceived by many) would  bother me quite a bit.

Do you think the advertisements in the game will be multimedia video display or just still images? I am sure, we will be distracted by advertisements if they come in video.

Playing, fighting mobs *wacks* *wack*.....New advertisement....*Look Jessica Alba in Tiger Beer*....*drools*....Oops...why my character stops moving and lying on ground? BECAUSE HE IS DEAD!

Anyway, I know that we can turn it off and I am not complaining though. Just curious the new way of MMORPG market. Let see how it goes.

Currently the plan is that we will be using a size that at smallest will be 128x128, and biggest 256x256.

I've also been experimenting with scaling based on the size of your display.  So if you play on 1024x768, you get 128x128.  If you play at 1600x1200 or bigger, you get 256x256.  So I'm still working on this idea.

It's interesting we are not actually forcing the development team to put this in at a certain size, we're having the art director decide what works well for him.  (Meaning a square or a rectangle, size and placement.)

So I can't say for sure yet what the final placement will be, but it certainly won't be "in your face".

And you are correct, if you don't like it, then wave it goodbye.  Keeping your cost of playing at ZERO is my primary objective, as I want other teams to start thinking this way too.  So we will do our best to show that it can work and is an attractive concept.  (Being rewarded if you do decide to turn it on.)

Ok, before I start on the main topic, lemme just say this: Why can't I turn off the adds in EA Games off-line games? Just another reason I won't give EA the time of day, and haven't since NFS2 was released. NO OPTIONS.

Hey, shiny..um...dp.... WOOHOO ok back on track

I have a widescreen... is there any chance of 16:10 ratio rez support being tossed into the dev blender? Coz you know, when Jessica Alba pops up on my screen, it would ruin the effect if she was as wide as the Goodyear blimp.

And speaking of Jessica Alba, you KNOW there is no WAY I would turn off ads if I knew she was gona randomly pop in my face, hell I'd opt for the FULL SCREEN OVERLAY BEIBEH!!! Gimme the T&A bonus to counteract my EXP loss everytime I get pwned. Hey, it even gives me the perfect excuse! Everytime somene kicks the living daylights outta me, I can always conveniently BLAME IT ON DARK ANGEL WOOHOOOOO!!!

A couple of posts ago, someone ranted against adverts in MMOs and how it would ruin the ambience. I wonder if he has played AO, the pioneer (afaik) of in-MMO-game adverts. Personally, I might have found myself alligning with his position a couple of months ago, but now, to be brutally honest, I'm so gawl-blessed-danged DONE with GANKERS in MMOs, that an issue as dull and dreary as adverts can't possibly stir my blood with passion anymore. Where's my button to turn of the Ganks, eh?

ZOMG YEH!!! OK this is perfect and BRUTAL! I will even completely accept ganker PK with this! If you are the Victim of a gank attack, then you get a button that pops up that you may opt to press, a button that launches a full-screen advert pop-up overlay into the Ganker's face! HELLZ yes! I'm ALL over that like flys on um... FLYS yes!!

And, think about it, there could be different EXP bonus awards for leaving adds turned on, depending on the material. Pepsi adds, Toyota adds, these would earn basic EXP bonuses coz they're, well, just boring nuisances. Jessica Alba poured into lycra, bent over the bonnet of said Toyota, sucking on that Pepsi bottle, that should be worth loads more EXP bonus. Then, now here's the big one, for maximum bonus points (for all the guys out there at least), if you can manage to keep that ad turned on that starts 'Are you having one of those bad feminine days...'

WOOT! Yeh, baby! Gimme that anti-Gank button that launches a FULL SCREEN feminine protection add right in their schnoz! I'LL EVEN PAY GAMESHOP PREMIUM FOR IT!!!!!

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH HEEEEEKEKEKEKEKEKE HOOOHOOHOOHOOHOO! ahhh. hehe. hoo. hmmmm.

I've been playing too much Last Chaos if you couldn't tell.

Oh and ladies out there gaming. What would be the best way to distract you? What would earn maximum points should you leave the adverts switched on full size? Discuss!

The game engine already supports widescreen and being a Jessica Alba fan, I totally understand.

I just wish the last season of Dark Angel didn't suck so much, it might still be on today.

I blame the dog guy for everything.

Lol you do realise that Shinydp, is infact David Perry, the founder of the famous company Shiny, just thought i would let you know that, becasue it seems that you didnt know by the way you refered to him as Shinydp ::::35::. It's all good though.

I also agree, David is doing an excellent job giving us information and i am extremely excited about this game because it actually has a dev team that cares and having David with them is just another big bonus that only makes me want to get into this game even more.

    Garrik,

I'll be handling the Closed Beta for 2Moons a little more openly than usual.  Meaning I'm not just looking for people to test the game, I will want you to discuss balance, features, interface with me etc.  If you have game designer DNA, then this will be the closed beta for you.  I want the closed beta members to really feel they made a difference.

I would be perfect for the Closed Beta. I enjoy testing and discussing the features of games to make it better or to correct something that is out of place. I have much experience in beta testing, and have beta tested many Free and P2P mmo's. I will be *hopefully* looking foward to my testing 2Moons. ^_^

Wow! No, honestly. Wow~~~. Garrik, I honestly thought shinydp was a member of a dev team that was cool enough to keep close ties with forumites. But... but... FOUNDER???? I'm so not worthy!!!

Frankly, I just encountered 2moons by pure random accident. After the frustration of the comms vaccuum with whatever the current state is with cabalonline.net and talking about Last Chaos and other off-topic subjects in the CO forum with ravenmyst, raven in one post told me I should check this game out. So to come over here and see not a dev, but a founder, having regular discourse with the fanbase is bliss as sheer as the camisole Jessica Alba is wearing pictured in my mind!!!!

If there is one thing that has stood out in my mind over time, it is how rabidly loyal and steadfast the DAoC lot have been over the years. They are the sort of lot who won't hesitate to take up pitchforks and torches at the slightest hint of a scent of a threat to their beloved Design Team. Why is this? Because the designers did their utmost to walk with the players.

Shinydp is obviously walking with his players-to-be, hell he actually shook my hand. You've got the makings for a very loyal, steadfast following, at this rate. To echo what someone else said, I haven't been this excited over a game in a long time.

Sounds excellent. I have already set up an account on the main 2Moons page and i check it daily. So i hope i can be of service in the future. I have played alot of mmorpgs so i know what sort of things to look out for.

Iv actually been looking into the newer games coming out and reading how there Physics is going to work and alot of them have great ideas for in game physics and i really hope some of them wil be includedin 2Moons and of course physics of its own.

As im sure you know making the game versatile is an important factor, so that there is always things to do, when your tired of fighting, you can craft, or do othe mini games or sub-missions. Also nice little features like being able to climb up cliffs (having a jump button ! :p) and other objects is always nice to have, it makes the game alot more dynamic and interesting.

I can think of alot of great things that i belive add great immersion to the game, thing ssuch as weather effects and how they effect terrain and the different races and of course one of my favorite aspects PvP, I think siegeing and attaking other players strong holds is always a great feature. But anyway i dont know the limits of the engine or what you are working with so it is difficult to pick out the things that would actually be useful to you.

One thing i can say MUST be accurate. When i chop those guys limbs off make it sound nasty and make those heads roll :p. Also how about being able to target limbs and depending on the damage you do to a certain limb, depends wether or not it will be removed or injured. If its injured they are slower with it, for example if you injusr a leg they limp, if you injur an arm they attack slower or defend less. Now if you remove them, well lets say you remove a leg, they should hit the deck and be scrambling to defend themselves, before i kill them, when i say kill them i mean finish them with a good old implaing or somthing along those lines ::::20::.

Maybe im just sick though ::::35::.

    "Make those heads roll"

This reminds me of one of my old favourites, back on my Amiga 500+, a game called "Moonstone". That game rocked back then, knights fighting dragons, monsters and other knights, impaling, chopping and decapitation all included. I'd love to see something like this re-introduced using the new technology we now have.

I would DEFINATLY be interested in helping out with ideas/discussions, regarding the games content and functionality, just give me the nod ;)

Bring it on, the concept sounds great! Cant wait to see it for myself.

I love the fact that David is involved here at this level.

I've played a little on a lot of MMO's and a lot on a few of them...

I finally have an internet connection that is worth using for online play... I used to be on satellite so I was real limited (like to one game) in terms of the choices I had.

I like the idea of advertising in the games helping to pay (or in this case, completely paying) for the costs of the game... the above mentioned game was Anarchy Online and I thought the way they incorporated the ads was great...
An urban landscape would have billboards anyway and they just chose to use real ads instead of fake ones... I thought that was a great choice over stealing away a fixed portion of the screen.

As mentioned in one of the posts, I hope that there will be crafting and such available... another game I've dabbled at even has mining as an option... I enjoy that too... provides a realistic source of material for the crafters...

Anyway, kudos for you, David, for breaking out of the "buy the game and then pay constantly for it" mindset of so many developers out there! I hope to see you all in the closed beta!

I think the advertisement idea is brilliant. The fact that it is optional is even MORE brilliant. I was waiting for a developer to actually come up with this idea, and I must say Perry had hit a soft spot in this business. Plus this offers a finally mature MMO that is PvP centric. This game can be VERY big if they hit it right in gameplay and PvP. And did I see....someone from Acclaim post here? Wow, that is great.   That level of involvement with testers and players is something that will truly help the game. I will definitly be wanting to test in closed beta for you guys.

And for those worrying that the ads will get in the way of PvP. You know what I say? When your farming and leveling it up, leave it on. When youre PvP'ing, turn it off. Its that simple.

What would be cool would be to have the Adveritesements like Starcraft. Up at the top. It never bothered when I was playing that game. So ya that wouldnt be bad. Like a banner at the top I would not mind that.
