Ive said this elsewhere on MMORPG.com, but im putting it here where it belongs, in this forum.
Im extremely disappointed with Stargate Worlds... yes... already...
Stargate would ideally be more like a shooter-type franchise where player-skill is augmented by character-skill. If they take out the entire player-skill mechanics and make it a level-based item-grind like WoW, just like EVERY FUCKING THING ELSE (with a few exceptions, like Darkfall), along with their new moronic focus on "making it fun" rather than making it an interesting gameworld, then we are just going to have another average SAFE Everquest-based World of Warcraft game.
Ive seen developers focus on "making it fun." Thats the term that developers use when they cant make it interesting. It is the same philosophy that results in watered-down EQ games that i dont pay for, like Star Wars Galaxies (i didnt buy it).
What the fuck are they thinking?
Stargate is action! So they TAKE OUT THE ACTION ?!? What the fuck are they thinking ?!?
Developers wasting time reiterating over already built systems is what waters down games, rather than refining the systems they already have. The need for developers to reiterate over a system and changing it endlessly demonstrates that those developers dont have any idea what they are doing, and are throwing out junk in the hopes that someone will approve of their mistakes. To them i say: do your fucking job, developers, and design it correctly the FIRST TIME, then after that DONT FUCKEN CHANGE IT. If you cant come up with a system that works, then by all means, get a different job and let REAL designers handle it.
Im saying all this in a not-so-nice way because it is obvious that the Stargate Worlds developers have changed their plan ALREADY, and i care about the game. At first they were talking about awesome features for this game, like FPS gameplay mixed with RPG elements, but now they are changing it into an Everquest in Space... No thanks, we've seen Star Wars Galaxies tricks and "make-it-fun gameplay," enough already. The sad thing is that the developers seem to have lost sight already what would have made this game great. Ive read all past interviews, i know whats happening. Theyve changed their design for the game. Already. Why did they even bother to tell players what they were planning, then change it into something different? Lame.
Seriously, these designers for SGW seemed good at first, but this interview shows they have taken a nose-dive into mediocrity and predictable non-innovative "do what is proven to work" syndrome. You ducked out on the player-skill-based FPS elements, so you suck. Now what we get with Stargate Worlds is another stale World of Warcrap clone, which is an EQ clone, which is a MUD clone, which is not interesting.

FPS belong in single player games and online games such as Battlefield or Counterstrike, not mmorpgs.
although i don't agree with the level based system i think it should have been skill based, given a set of skill points to pick and choose what professions i want. but RPG style combat is more fun than fps imo. it actually takes strategy and skill to fight, it makes you think what special is appropriate vs. pointing and clicking. although i do believe that rpg style combat is only fun if its done right, sorta like city of heroes the rpg combat in that game is done very well.

I like point and click games also but you just don't get that sense of immersion in a point and click game.
And how many are playing planetside again?
Why make a "planetside" game, when there's so many free games out there based on the same concept?
run, shoot, die, respawn, run, shoot, die, respawn.

Hi,
I have to disagree with your opinion. I don't think FPS is going to be format for every MMO. It maybe for games that are MMOG, but as a general rule it isn't a good idea for a MMORPG. Especially one based on a IP. . Don't get me wrong I would like to see a hybrid system with the turn based system favored a little more. If I had to pick I would pick a turn based system for a MMORPG game if it was fast and provided various animations for the skills and abilities. Also keep in mind, FPS has it's problems to
1. People who aren't as quick reflex wise or who have disabilties will not do as well as most [not all] and as a result will not particular like playing the game.
2. FPS doens't just rely on a players physical reactions. If you are really wanting a FPS system were you are truly challenging someone to see who is the best, than you need to start off will equal game systems and connections [I'm not talking about in-game equipement or tactic a player uses, which is were reall skill comes into play]. Unfortunatly most don't have equal systems or connections. Things like network connection, Network cards, memory, and CPU all play a role in FPS; as a result this doesn't make it a fair match, since it's unlikely most will have similar systems. Even in console game, your connection to the network is going to have the biggest impact on a FPS type game.

Hi all,
For the record I'm disappointed that this is planned to be a level based game [as it stands now]. The 2 main reasons.
1. Your pretty much limited to where you can go in the game enviroment because you have to wait till your the right level to get there. In a skill / equipment based game they can go where ever and still have a chance to do something [granted not as well] esecially if they are grouped with others.
2. I find level based games to me more artifical than skill based games that also rely on equipment and tactics.
Example:
Level based:
You have two players who are equal in everyway [including the same weapon] except one has a much higher level than the other. They are in combat, they both hit the exact same type target [separate]. The higher level player does more damage and hits more often simiply because he is a higher level. THIS IS MORE ARTIFICAL.
Skill / equipment based:
Same scenario as above, except that they both do the same amount of damage, but the more skilled hits the target more often [more realistic] and may have more access to skills. Plus in the future the player can add imrpove skills and add parts to their weapon that will help compensate for being lowered skilled [again more realistic].

I agree with your assesment up to a point. I think it's down to personal preference, I don't think at the moment an FPS style game is good for PVP but it's great against NPCs. As time goes by though internet connections are getting better and better. So eventualy that won't be an issue. It's not really an issue with me now. As long as I play on a "good" Euro server I normaly get ok pings.
To your first point I really don't think devs care much for disabled people. I don't think there even going to discuss it when desgning a game. Tho I would support any game development that helped any disabled person play better.
Also when I say FPS im not talking about making Stargate into a counter srtike.
Every game relies on player reactions even RPGs. Play WOW and then tell me that the top players have just average reactions. I'm a pretty good FPS player and I couldn't keep up with them, even when setting up HOT keys. I saw a Horde in the distance, looked down to see what skill I should hit him with and by the time I looked up I was being slamed by combos of skills. I don't PVP in WOW cus it's to fast for me.
First Person perspective games just offer more than Third person point and clicks do. Granted nearly every FPS game out there is just a shooter. However they will get much much better over time as people start working more RPG style elements into them. They will start moving away from stright out shooting and more into creating emersion.
Why? Because the average Stargate viewer is an adult in their late 20's or well into their 30's. It's an adult show. Who likes FPS's most? Uber kiddies and little rage children. It's not a good match.
Furthermore, adult gamers don't have "twitchy fingers" like little kids...any sort of FPS MMO would fail in the adult demographic for no other reason than most people in their 30's don't have the same kind of reflexes, and if we were forced to rely on them...well it'd be frustrating.
There are mmofps's and mmorpg's. mmorpg's are based on character skills. mmofps's are based on player skills. You currently are on mmorpg.com not mmofps.com. Ofcourse the majority here prefer rpg style.
Make a difference!
Dude they just thought of a game engine to use a few months ago. Jeez....god give it some time and take a chill pill,
all of you.
