As the title states progression or fun? What makes you log in everyday, pushing your friends farther ahead and perfecting your character or simply blowing off steam and trying to forget how dull things are outside of your world.
I'm asking because in every game I've played I've constantly questioned both of those motives, how is this game more fun and immersive than the next one? What am I doing to better my character today?
Try to be honest with yourself on this, what keeps you from skipping a day and not playing or playing something else, the need to advance yourself/your team or the fact that nothing else will keep you as entertained?

Hmmm. Thats a hard question. For me, I think this is the cycle;
1. )Iit starts out with just wanting to explore and learn about the game environment.
2.) then it becomes about trying to be moresuccessful, richer, powerful, more skilled than the next guy. Once I've taken that as far as possible due to time contraints on game play, I move to the last step of the cycle.
3.) It always end with me staying around longer than I should becasue I've become friends with cool people in game. At this point I will end subscrip, renew, then end again, a few times. But in the 3 Mmorpgs I've played, it always ends with not being able to justify the monthly fee if Im not having fun in the game anymore.

What if the progression IS your fun?
I like to do various stuff, depening on my mood. The sign of a great MMORPG, is one that has lots of ways to enjoy yourself. Not just leveling, not just raiding, not just PvP, not just crafting, etc. If any MMO shoehorns you into only ONE 'right' way to have fun, its failing to utilize it's potential, imo. This is WoW's big weaklness, that ONLY dungeon grinding gives any kind of reward or potential enjoyment. Real crafting (the sense of providing valuable works for the community) or housing (personal customization) or anything else, doesn't exist as an option.
I play a game for the immersive world, and the friends I make. The ability to do some stuff, talk to some folks, and take a few cool screenies.
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

I get my fun meeting people, interacting, creating moments in time and enjoying the games finner points the best way I know how.
The progression of an MMO get's the competetive side in me going, I want to see where it's going to take me, how much better I will be. It's also about advancing in the game, being able to help others and attaining new goals.
In the end, that's what makes MMO's so special and what keeps a person interested, without both those things, whats the point?

The fun and immersion. I've always taken the "slow grind," and I have at times regretted it (especially in terms of SWG), but to me the fun is all about the little things. Roleplay. Memorable situations. Going out without any plan, and discovering you get caught up in events you would have never experienced if you planned your day.
The builds I choose are about expression, not about being ub0r. If that means that I'll suffer in endgame PvP or PvE, or not be on the short list of guilds, so be it. To me, the whole endgame culture of min/maxing, playing "geek football" by position, and TS/Vent holds no appeal for me, and I just assume not bother with it, since I can find fun without it.

I like to grind the shit out of the game for a couple of months...then when I'm 'bigger' and richer I'll take a big sack of loot over to the noobs area and hand it out like candy! Then it's back to the grind...
Good MMOGs are never an either-or thing...
That said, a lot of the time my plans get thrown out of the window almost as soon as I log in and I spend the entire session just chating, crafting free for noobs or helping out with someone elses plans.
I believe this is why I'm a MMORPG addict.
I can never be 100% sure what I will be doing when I log in, but even if no one else is playing out then I can still follow my own plan and enjoy myself by progressing my character.
Bottom line I play for both, both are fun for me

To me, its the environment. I have to get the feeling that I am there and it is a new world.
Which FF Character Are You?
I'm playing:
Battlefield 2 Because:
I feel that I improove with each second played in the game. And I also feel that by playing BF2 which is a FPS, I practice for future FPS games. Since being good on one FPS game makes you much better on other FPS games. So they are all very much alike.
The reward I get is that collective enjoyment. To improve in general and also in real life. The reaction improves. At least I feel that way.
It is also by competetive reasons. I play because all stats are saved. Each kill/death is put into your record which you can watch any moment and compare with your friends. And of course you want to have better results than them.
Guild Wars because:
It's all very competetive. But in a different way.
It's alot about teamwork and getting to know your mates you play with. You learn much about how people work in groups and what they prefer and what you can complete together.
I don't feel that I want to be "better" than any friend, I want to be just AS GOOD as them. And together we shall win against every other team.
So 2 different angles of games I play there.
On the list of games I don't like I could just say:
World of Warcraft because:
It's the stereotype of a MMORPG. I feel they are most pretty much the same. Progression feels worthless and it takes too much time. And that's what it's all about, spending time rather than improoving your personal skills. Instead you gain items...
Levels are a huge matter to me, and they are worthless. We are all going down the same road and levels are only obstacles on our freeway. We're gonna hit the very same wall and when we do it's all about what kind of coalition suspencer we've got. The overall substance of a game is important and repetetiveness should be avoided at all costs in Pay per Month games.
Over and out.

Heh that's funny, I do the exact same thing with all games that I get into. Games like Lineage1, SWG, EQ2 and WoW that I've really stayed with for awhile, one of my greatest sources of fun and enjoyment is going to the starting areas and helping the younglings get acclimated into the world.
Great way to meet new people, start them off on a positive step in a new game and feels hella good filling your online time just helping someone have fun.

for me its all about exploration, the enviroment, the places you can go, and in doing so gaining rare things... mmmm treasure....
and good people, that matters alot too, i dont really want to be playing a game where the people around me are d**ks
then when i get tired of that, being helpful to noobs... you gotta trat them the way you woulda wanted to be treated when you started..
but then back to attempting to see everything... every design element in the enviroment, everything it has to offer.
at the moment i dont play anything... basically i cant find anything thats worth exploring, played MxO that was a laugh you can jump buildings.. explore everything... but ... gah the rest of the game was so repetative..
RFo was pretty loved exploring it, loved harvesting... mmm grind .... helping noobs... crafting... shame that was all there was to it...
SwG crist there was something you could explore... it even gave you things to find while you explored... now that was cool... played as bio engineer ... a long time ago, shame thay made it about as good as gay porn.. (advice for $oE, games shouldnt be like gay porn, they should be like sex...)
played entrop uni, that was ok... not really pretty enough tho... and i dont really want to spend a year grinding before i can do anything... YAWN MUCH
GW pretty yes... exploring seemed more like following a path tho... shame...
FFXI now there was something pretty and big enough to explore, shame its so hard to be a noob in it...
if anyone cares send me a mail with a suggestion of something to play (that way this thread wont get over taken)
World of Darkness its coming are you excited?
I play for both reasons. When I start out, the game has to be fun. Most games are typically fun through the 1-6 noob quest grind, but some of them lose their steam after that. If a game holds me in past this phase, and I find some friends (like just happened in DAoC), I'm usually very inclined to stay into it.
Once I hit the mid-levels, the progression parts starts up and I get excited about getting to max my character out and finally dominate in some PvP. I also get pretty pumped to help out some noobs on my side. I like seeing my character look cooler and cooler as time goes on, so that pulls me in sometimes too.
I like to grind the shit out of the game for a couple of months...then when I'm 'bigger' and richer I'll take a big sack of loot over to the noobs area and hand it out like candy! Then it's back to the grind...

Meh... if helping others have a good time and enjoying myself in the process is weak, then I'm guilty.
Typically though, I really wouldn't care if someone who didn't know the meaning of the word "carebare" said a word to me . Call me silly but the oppinion of a newby doesn't bother me all that much.

I agree totally with Pietoro. The reason I stopped playing WOW after 2 weeks is because after playing a game like SWG or Ultima Online (Which have multiple options for gameplay, i.e. housing, crafting system, PVM, PVP etc) I felt WOW had less to offer and I would get bored without another avenue to enjoy.
If the game has all of the above implemented then you can move onto some other aspect if you get bored. One month its PVP , next month is crafting and setting up a shop. You just have more options for gameplay. Now if you havent experienced all these types of options and WOW was your first MMORPG, then you might enjoy it and have fun. But once you get a taste of other games, I believe WOW loses some of its appeal.
Making my character a level 259 fighter is not fun. I want my character set and then I can concentrate on other aspects of the game. I also dont like having Uber loot to hunt for. Certain armor or weapons helps progress your character but doesnt always add to the fun factor. Especially if your arent able to compete and get some of those items. Ultima Online used to be a perfect example. The looted items might have given you an advantage, but only for a short time once you were killed and looted. It had more of a balance to it. Just having crafted wares didnt really put you at a great advantage either. It was a much more casual game. You didnt have to play 24/7 to compete and thats whats lacking nowadays.
Like I said, I enjoy having my character developed in a reasonable amount of time so then I can enjoy all the aspects the game has to offer, without the worry of .... I need this magic sword or I have to get to level 55 by tonight.
