What is Grind?

Whenever I've read reviews, someone always says it's a "grindfest" or something. Can someone please elaborate, and what is instancing?

same monster over and over in a mind-numbing fashion so you can gain

Grind is basically where you need to kill enough enemies that it is most easily expressed in scientific notation.

Like, "I need to slay 1x10^8 goblins to get level 87" would be grinding. It applies to any activity which is really repetitive without variation, basically. Though some expand it to include things that are just repetitive. Its usually considered boring as hell.

An instance is something you use to start a flame war in a forum. Well, that isn't the primary purpose but...

Ok so an instance is basically an area of the game that the server creates new versions of. For example, lets say you've got a dungeon in the game with lots of "loot". It gets more and more crowded so everyone is camping the same spawns. Some games instead let the number of people in the dungeon reach some kind of cap, and then recreate the whole dungeon. Everyone that comes in after that goes into the new version. It has all the same stuff (probably) but the players in instance A don't see or interact with those in instance B in any way.

Also, some times instances are private. Your group or just yourself go into the instance to complete some sort of quest/mission/raid where having other players around would take away the point of the quest. Or even just so you don't have 8 or 9 people talking to or killing one particular NPC because it looks silly.

You're both wrong. Grind just means to repeatedly do monotonous tasks over and over in order to achieve something.

Instances are duplicate zones of a certain location. Say there's a dungeon, if it's instanced, that means each time a player or party enters it, the dungeon is replicated only for that party or player so anyone else who enters is in a separate dungeon, even though it's the same dungeon.

Grinding is the abosolute worst thing in a MMORPG. It consists of killing mobs over and over and OVER again to gain levels because there are not enoyugh quests or you did them all.

Also grining can be used as a term in skateboarding... But were not on that discussion yet.

Like srohek said it is anything that you repeat over and over again to achieve something.   All games have some level of grind to them.  Heck almost anything in live has grind to it.  Grind certainly isn't anything special to MMOs.  Such as the old saying, "The daily grind".
