Hard to imagine, seeing as there was 10million in development costs...  Can someone clarify this for me?

I'm not sure about the EU version that's being published by Persistent Worlds, but the North American version from Acclaim will be free to play.

Whether there will be a monthly fee option for additional effects I'm unsure of.

So basically this is like AO where you can dl it off the site or like GW, no monthly fee. btw can someone give me a general idea what this game is about, (im quite intererested in this game).

    thx.

    This is what I think.

They're pulling a Guild Wars. You buy the client, you play the game for free.

Runescape is totally free, but that game is terrible.

Either that, or they're going to a have a "free" account and a "premium" account. Limit some of the stuff in the game and just put it out there.

Either way, I'd pay for this game.

This game is martial arts MMO. You pick a clan to be with, there are several different clans with several different moves.

Wu-Tang, Brotherhood of Theives, and Shaolin are just some examples.

Use Hands and Feet, or weapons.

It's based on a quest system, as you progress through the game you get stronger. (I hope that didn't break the NDA o.O)

It's totally free. No purchase, no monthly fee.

To clarify my previous post, by a monthly fee for additional effects, perhaps something like removing ads (if they're implemented) or perhaps boosting xp rates and offering additional attire choices, etc. Stuff like that. But I've heard various things and so I'm not sure if any they might go with.

Ok. Don't believe Acclaim or check the links that Renji60 provided. I got my information straight from the Acclaim forums.

Yes the game is going to free. Kinda funny though because its not going to be free for the Vietnamese people to play lol. It will probably be like Kal Online and FlyFF where they make all there money off of a cash shop where you can buy in game stuff with real money.

I'm looking forward to this business model. :)  I've been having a relatively decent time and am curious as to what that "premium package" will entail; monthly sub? one time payment? Or the all-mysterious "other"?

Heck, same basic game-play that you get out of any other MMORPG.  At least I get a kick out of watching my character fight.

Yes, that was an awful, eye-rolling pun. image

I am not applying this to 9D, since its not out yet, however you get what you pay for.

Think about the people you will be playing with as well. WoW's community is bad enough.

It seems to me, free must be more like a trial, a chance to test it
before you buy idea. It will let you see what the game is like, but if
you plan on spending any time with the game you are going to want to
play the monthly fee. Unless you are masochist who enjoys ads and the
lower xp rates and whatever else they add to encorage buying.

Or you don't have money to spend and aren't worried about what the kids next to you are doing in the game. Or you're looking for a cost-free backup MMO to spend a few hours with when things are going slow in your P2P game. Or....well, you get the picture. image

If you check the Acclaim forums and homepage, you'll see the official statement is along the lines of "Every game Acclaim releases will be free to play."  However, they've stated various games will have various business models so it's hard to say what they will do with this one.  Bots has an item shop, 2Moons will have an ad bar built into the UI.

9Dragons will likely have either an item shop or a "pay for premium content" option.  Hard to say if it'll be a one time payment to unlock things or if it'll be like Anarchy Online where to get the expansions you pay a monthly fee.

they say though in the link that they will sell virtual items for cash and the items are either character
customizations or give the ability to get bonus experience. the players do not need to buy them in order to fully experience 9Dragons.
The cash items do not alter the in-game economy, and are really there
for those players who want differentiation. so i think the business model will make u pay for the game in order to use the virtual items. hopefully it'd be a one time thing, but might not, who knows?
