If you are into instant gratification, kill, loot, rinse, repeat, then SWGNGE edition isn't a 4th rate game. Have fun, unfortunately there aren't enough of you to fill one server, and with the short attention span of that type of player, even they won't be around long.
If you wanted your game to be more than that, to be about choices, to be about the ability to never set foot on a battlefield yet be just as important as any combatant, to offer a real endgame earned reward, then to call the NGE a 4th rate game is being generous.

That's an opinion that very very few agree with. Just look at the subscription numbers.
Even those I know who won't let go of SWG hate the new system. They "Make do" with what they have.

What really sucks, the MMOs coming out in the next year suck! All clones. Everyone here is playing a 2nd rate game to pass the time until something good comes along. Well, I'm not buying anything coming out. I already played EQ and I have no interest in WoW so why would I buy a clone?
NGE has been out a year and we have to wait until 2009 for the next batch of launches. Guess what? That's going to be 3-4 years (starting at the first day of the NGE aka everyone quit) waiting for an original game that doesn't insult my intelligence. Oh btw, that's IF the games coming out in 2009 will be anything good, but I'm willing to bet they will be more of the same. I can see it now, Devs are creating a game asking thierselves, "what would Blizzard do"? Screw that.
I'm starting to think that the MMO industry only cares about a fast $$ and expects it's [game servers] life to be a year before it gets shutdown. What a crappy goal, for us anyways, they get paid.

Imagine if you could only purchase stamps from a single source, and that you had to pay a monthly fee to not only acquire new stamps, but to keep access to the stamps you already had.
Then imagine that nearly 3 years after you started your collection the provider suddenly decides to take away all but 9 "iconic" stamps, and only gave you 3 weeks notice, the day after enticing you to pay for the latest collector book?
That is what has happened to us. SWG was our hobby. It was what we did to entertain ourselves. We loved it. A LOT, enough that the hatred, anger, and upset is just as hot now as it was a year ago.
