When watching the news for instance, say the topic is the mental health of serial killers and the network want an opinion, who would be taken seriously, a professor in mental health or someone like me for instance with a name like we3ster? and no expertise on mental health?

You are watching Wimbledon, a new player has hit the scene, they want to get people's thoughts on how good this guy is, who do they ask, who would you ask? Me, with a name like we3ster? Now I like tennis, have followed for nigh on 25 years but am not an expert or John McEnroe or say Martina Navratilova? Who would carry more weight?

A fledgling designer has created a pair of trousers, people are saying that the trousers could start a new worldwide trend, the network want opinions on whether this will be the case. One network has gotten in Giorgio Armani and Yves Saint Laurent to comment, the other have two people from a heavily advertised forum by two people called fashionsux123 and fashionsux124, they have no face, no-one knows them, which network would you watch to find out if these trousers are the next big thing?

You are an actor, your movie is doing well and you have been nominated for a best actor Oscar, you have also been nominated by the I Love Movies website best actor award by fans of the website. The Oscar is voted for by industry professionals, directors, other actors etc. The I love movies award has been nominated by people such as perioddramassuck, Clooneyfuck and Scarfacerules. The awards are both on the same night, failure to turn up to either or both means you cannot win, which would you go to?

You are a games developer, your publisher will let you put a sticker onto the front of your box highlighting an award you have won. The choice has come down to two awards, one is best game from BAFTA voted for by industry professionals in the pursuit of excellence within the videogame industry. The other is from MMORPGRULEZ.COM, this one has been voted for by the general public from people with such names as PVPKILLA, WOWSUX and SOESWGNGESUX. Not only that but the website advertises levelling up services and gold buying within MMO's. Which sticker would you choose to put on the front of your box?

With organisations Like BAFTA awarding games for excellence etc, the chances are that other organisations like the American Academy (they award the Oscar by the way) and the Golden Globes etc will follow suit.

My point is that the most prestigious awards in any given area and those commented on are voted for by professionals within those given industries.

I do play DDO and if I wanted to highlight that in this particular thread, I would have started by lauding it over as to how more prestigious a BAFTA is over a Gamespot award and how it is the best game ever.

These organisations like BAFTA are now beginning to see the potential of computer games as an art form and they will start giving out awards, making awards given by sites like this and Gamespot more worthless.

OMG LOL you actually think that gamers are going to pay more attention to some prissy aware that some organization like BAFTA gives a game than what other players think about said game?

Sure there is a bunch of smell turd postings on here. But the majority of the replies usually hold some honesty to them.   Just because not everyone sits down and writes out a wall of text to review a game, nor has attended journalism school doesn't mean that their opinions shouldn't be respected.

The fact is that even though there is a lot of bashing on here, there is a lot of good information that can help make or break a game.   I am sorry that you got your feelings hurt that just because DDO was awarded something by the likes of the BAFTA that most of us still know the truth.

If you don't like sites like these pick up your things and move on. We could care less.

This isn't about DDO, it's about credible organisations awarding games.

Forget DDO, let's say WoW won an Oscar (this will happen, the American Academy awarding games) for best game of 2006 and Gamespot also awarded WoW the award for best game, which would make the news? Which would you be more pleased to win? Which ceremony would you attend, whose award would have more credibility? Which award would the GENERAL PUBLIC take more seriously?

Most games players haven't even heard of these websites, let alone the general public.

If you had a painting in your garage you suspected to be a work of art, would you ask your next door neighbour for his critical opinion? Of course not, (unless he worked for Sotheby's).

Honestly I think you are placing way too much value on these awards. I place more value on the actually players input that I read here. I could care less about the Oscars or Emmys or whatever. Using movies as an example, I watch movies because other peers say they are good, not because some group of snobnoses that make up some organization says it's cool.

So yes I value the average review here or on the other gaming sites far, far more than I do some organization like BAFTA.

Exactly, this website is filled with adverts and is a money making operation, go to the BAFTA website and you will not see a single advert. These sites like IGN, Gamespot and this one are NOT here to help push the boundaries of gameplaying, or to make yours or my experiences any better.

These sites have NO influence at all, they do not care about gaming or gamers for that matter, if they did, then they would not advertise game levelling services or gold sellers.

Both IGN and Gamespot are terrible. Did you know IGN owns one of the biggest MMO gold selling sites?

anyways, it's stupid for anyone to purchase or not purchase something based on reviews or awards recieved. Reviews are just opinions, and like the saying goes "opinions are like a$$holes. Everyone has one."

Doesn't matter where the review comes from its still just some guy's opinion. Even if some top game designer reviewed a current release saying "this is the best game ive ever played!" that still doesnt mean your going to like it.

Reviews are still however very good to read before you purchase a new game. Not because they tell you if the game sucks or not, but because most reviews give out details about the features in the game and how those features work etc.

Its up to you as a consumer to read the reviews for a product and make your own assumption on whether or not the game will be a fit for you.

QFT, other than I don't see what IGN owning a gold selling site has to with anything, but the rest of it I agree with. But I completely disagree with the OP saying that the reviews on the site are worthless for the very reasons you posted.

The fact that majority of posters here are hardcore gamers and veterans of MMORPGs makes the reviews here worth reading. MMORPGs are still an underground thing, so far only WoW has made it to the surface, therefore hearing reviews from game testers is a big thing, i couldnt care less what some artsiefartsie guy with a cool title says. This is interweb, so you have to keep on that bullshit filter when you read stuff here and youll be fine.

Sorry, but you cannot trust proffesional reviewers either. Instead of the common folks like us, having bias against other games, proffesional reviewers just do naugthy things.. Like making a game sound good, with a nice check in their pocket.

I went and checked out your BAFTA's award site for the games they selected. Most of there selections were a joke and I would hazard to guess that a lot if not majority of the people on here would agree with me.

I woudln't ever base my purchasing of a game on a professional reviewer, nor would I some organization like the BAFTA. I would base my opinions more so on the average Joe (or bloke for our Brit friend here). Even then though if there is a game that appeals to me I would still get it even if the majority of the people said beware. But at least I would go into the purchase knowing what my actual peers thought about the game.

But for the OP to make a blanket statement saying that the reviews on this site and sites like it are worthless is crock.
