I am not an SOE fan. In fact I am so anti-SOE it is not even funny. Although I do not like their company or their products, I do not go to thier forums and flame their product(s).

I am a WoW fan. Always have, always will be. If it gives you people satisfaction to come to our section of the forums, where we as WoW fans can share our excitment, and try to ruin it, well that is just plain pathetic.

For us WoW fans, it is our day in the sun. It is our time to have this wonderful world to play in. The funny thing is, that most of you that "say" you will not try or play WoW, will probably be playing WoW if at release, a year or 2 down the road.

See all you fans in game.

I've enjoyed reading this topic and agree with many of the opinions posted.  I have to admit that I've never played any of Blizzard's games but I do know of their reputation via word of mouth from players that have.  Heck, I'm still "somewhat" new to the whole MMORPG thing and have enjoyed this newly acquired hobby so far. (Played SWG and FFXI)image

I've done alot of reading about Wow and what appeals to me is that it will be player friendly, no matter what your style of gameplay is.  I, for one, fall somewhere in between the casual gamer and the power gamer.  I prefer to solo rather than group and I love to craft and socialize.  What really caught my eye was the info on the crafting.  Pretty much everything will have a use and it won't be too much "hard work" in crafting up something. (That's something SWG and FFXI did not offer - crafting was like a 2nd job!)

WoW offers alot of what I like to do in a game. I love the graphics and "cartoonish" look of the characters. After all, mmo's are supposed to be our escape from real life. And I like quests even if they're the ole "start at NPC A, go see NPC B to pick up item and return".  It gives my character another way to explore her surrounding environment and be rewarded for it too.

I really look forward to the release and  can't wait to play!

I, myself am also fairly new to the mmorpg genre. However i was new to hack n' slash games like diablo/d2 and rts games like wc3. Those games, my fellow players, were great and changed my total perspective towards blizzard and such genres. I think the same will happen with WoW. It has great potential being in the warcraft universe.

I need a new mmorpg to get my hands on after playing FFXI. Don't get me wrong tho, ffxi was ok. It just lacked the whole fun element to it like many other mmo's. A week of 2-3 hr a day playing where the only moment of enjoyment was when my black mage finally got a whm sub. It turns out he still wasn't able to solo without resting after every battle.

But enough about that. WoW will add that enjoyment missing in today's games. Hopefully we won't all forget what the real reason we all are gamers. Because it's fun.

Thats my thought, don't flame image    image

Excellent post. Well articulated with lots of salient, interesting points. The problem is that the much vaunted 'Next Gen' MMOG's mean different things to different people. Originality does not necessarily have to mean new ideas but novel twists on existing ideas i.e. if you look at TV genres such as drama's, comedies, action etc, there are plenty of programmes that fit into the genre but each has a different slant, it's own idiosyncracies (except Saved by the Bell which ought to be put down for the good of Humanity).

I'm an old EQ fan but I'm ambivalent about EQ2 because I have my doubts whether SoE will make a polished product where all the features have been properly implemented, or whether they go for a cash cow, milking it for all it's worth. I'm not a Blizzard fan and am not particularly keen on the WoW series. What I am interested in is to see whether Blizzard can come up with implementing common features but in interesting ways that genuinely enchances gameplay rather than as a means to put x feature on the box to shift more units. If they can, then I'll look into playing WoW.

    Simple as that.

WoW is doing the exact same thing except that this isn't WoW2. They have no previous record to look at when it comes to improving 'old' gameplay. If you read up on the information readily available about WoW, you will see the devs say they aren't re-writing the genre, they are fixing its weak points and using what already works. This is not a bad 'formula', for SoE and NCsoft are doing it that way also. Don't expect EQ2, Lin2 or UXO to be brand new games. This is Blizzard we are talking about. Most of us know about Blizzard reputation for making a very fun addictive games. Not to mention, all their games are PC-game of the year. WOW will involve aroung stories and quest. They're try to making leveling fun through quest rewards such as huge xp and useful items. There will be group guest which will take about 2 hours to complete and solo quest which will be around half an hour. Most mmorpg is about lvl grinding which get repeatitive and boring at time.  We will just have to wait and see how it goes.
