Yea, Navy recruiters promised a buddy of mine a shot at seal camp if he signed up for 5 years instead of 4. What they failed to mention is that you had to have 20/20 vision to even walk through the front door of boot camp. So my friend showed up and didn't even get a shot at seal camp, and now the Navy is forcing him to stay the extra year.

    Good watch by the way.

I'd say 95% or more of that is truth.

Especially the part about the barracks.  That place was probably the most unsafe place I have ever lived.  Rapes, drugs, fights.  They were more than common.

*sigh* my post got deleted when I hit post message...time to type again.

I have a hard time believing that the words "you are promised a spot in Buds" or anything with the same meaning as that passed through the  navy recruiter's mouth (Buds is Basic Underwater Demolitions, the first part of Seal training).  Buds is an invitational program, and a naval recruiter has no authority to be giving out guarentees like that.  If the recruiter really did, then the Navy has even bigger issues that I thought.

Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.

You can be guarenteed a spot in BUD/S through a SEAL challenge contract. Without this there is no guarantee.

Recruiters can and will say anything at all to get you in for the most time possible.

If your going to join the military, stick to an officer program, don't under any circumstances just walk though the recruiters door and sign up.

    Before you enlist

A: Make sure George Dubya is out of office

B: Make sure we aren't in the middle of some bullshit "war" on terrorism that you don't believe in

C: Unless you consider the Confederate flag holy in some way, don't enlist.

Saved you guys a long read.

I don't think that signing the papers was the issue in this video. I think it was the fact that recruiters lie to you so you will sign the papers, then hold you in the military for longer than you signed up for.
If I sign up for 4 years, and they hold me for 6, I think I have every right in the world to whine.

I have heard of some cases with the Military holding people for longer than they have signed up for and it's total bullshit that they do it...and totaly counter intuitive to their overall recruitment efforts in a time where not very many people are signing up.

Recruiters have always lied and will always lie. What's new about this?

    QFT.

Do your research, know the facts. The problem is that most of the new blood is a bunch of young kids that don't know their stuff, don't read the fine print, and the biggest mistake is taking the words out of the Recruiters and/or Liasons mouths, as truth.

Hold on, so joining the army might mean I have a chance of getting shot at? I might have to shoot at people? Being able to blow up bridges isn't spmething most employers look for in a person? War isn't like a videogame?

    This really opened my eyes!

I underdstand complaining about the rapes and lies, but seriously, before you enlist, USE COMMON SENSE.

I just copy pasted that since it seemed to answer your post, and you seemed to overlook it.
Of course you will get shot at...it's the shady tactics they use to convince you to join that is being brought to light. I think it takes more than common sense to know that the government is lying to your face when they recruit you. Most people, including myself, kinda trust the government. So when they tell me I will serve 4 years, why would I think they are pulling my leg so I'd sign up? Ok, maybe I should realize the volunteer recruit numbers aren't meeting quota, and the government is shady by nature. Way to piss in my cornflakes Fulax.

Actually, I did say that I understand people complaining about the recruiters lying. I trust the gouvernment too, and I certainly wouldn't expect them to lie to get me to join the army.

Its the people complaining that they got injured or the that army didnt give them valuable work experience that annoy me.

Join the Army, make friends, travel to new places, learn new skills, three meals a day, room and board, All medical/Dental and eyecare covered and VA benefits when you get out.

WOW.........WHAT?....you mean I might have to shoot someone and a good chance to be killed for all that?

    Poor baby.

Anyone with common sense knows that there is that risk when joining the military.  Come on...no one is that naive to belive there isnt.  When I joined the Navy, the recruiter promised me all kinds of stuff too.  I signed up for 6 years when I joined.

Anytime you joined during that period, you had a chance to go to nam.

I joined in 1971.  I specifically requested a River boat in Vietnam.  After my test scores came back, they said I was over qualified, which really pissed me off.  A few of my friends were killed over there in 1970.  I felt I should go also.  They sent me to Radar school and Anti-submarine Air Control School (ASAC) instead.  They stationed me on a Destroyer Escort (Sub Hunter).

The cold war was in full effect.  I made two Med cruises which we encountered a couple of Russian subs.  I spent 5 years on one ship.  Got out in 1977.  Then got my two year AS college degree in Building Construction completely free going at night while working as a full time carpenter.   I got full VA benefits because I was in during Vietnam.

Neat little video (so far), I like seeing regular people's stories. But really what the hell do you think is going to happen when you join a country's military while that country is at war? Don't these people think things before hand. What they say is technically true, like being deployed doesn't necessarily mean you'll go to Iraq or Afganistan. Yes it's possible, but not fucking likely. Didn't these kids talk or research anything before hand? You joined now do your job.

Gasp! I'm getting dangerously close to agreeing with Outfctrl. I can't let that happen so I'll shamelessly add in the Iraq war is a pointless waste of life thought up by incompetents that draws resources and manpower from Afganistan. image

  • outfctrloutfctrl Member UncommonPosts: 3,619
When I joined, I think the war was winding down, thats why.  Kerry went to nam in the 60's when the war was in full swing.  Technically, I think the war ended in 1973.  I joined the Navy right after I turned 20, so if I went in when I was 18, I might have gone.

Navy Recruiters are NOTORIOUS for lying their asses off. I had a friend who was put into NUCLEAR Engine training, (that lasts 4yrs) with a 92percentile on his navy ASVAB. 92% is a great score, but if you don't have a 99% and thing the test was made for 5yr olds.... then you're not going to pass Nuke School.

(the rest I'm writing while I'm watching)

I do get paid very well for school. I make about $1800/mo TO GO TO SCHOOL through the army national guard. My friends who have been to Iraq are making $2200/mo.

The part about the contract is true. I have a buddy who enlisted in the Reg. Army the same time I enlisted in the NG. He went infantry so he could sign up for 2yrs.... 3.5yrs ago. He spent about 8 months in Alaska and has been in Iraq ever since. (his BN is known Army wide that they got ass rammed)

The thing about the women being treated badly is true. I tell any girl I meet that she doesn't want to join the Army, Army NG, or Army Res.

The equipment they sent ppl over with was poor. Now, it's more than enough. I personally KNOW people who have been hit by IEDs and brushed themselves off and kept going, while the IED killed 20 Iraqi people. (I know several who have had the same thing happen)

Good vid. Nothing was untrue. But if you don't know some of that stuff before you join the military then you're just a moron. lol. The only thing I had problems with is the part about the School Money. It's not hard to get your school money, the people who don't get it are the people who dont' try to get it. Sometimes it's common not to be paid your GI Bill, but you can still get it. Last semester a friend didn't get his till the last month then recieved a $4,500 check and that was the down payement on his new car.

Back in the 70's and early 80's I was geting like 225.00 per month to go to college.  Back then it was like 11.00 a credit and I graduated with 66 credits for AS degree in Construction.  The money was getting thru the GI Bill was full benefits because I was in during war.  If there is no war, I think you get like 75% or something.
