Most are 12.95.Newer ones are 14.95.
Games that should run smoothly on your system
1)Ultima online
2)linage
3)AC1
4)ragnarok online
Games that should run on your system with little lag(more in crowded areas)
1)anarchy online
2)everquest - with all new models off
3)DAoC- all minimum setting and classic setting. Will lag badly in large battles for sure
4)sims online
Rest games would say don't bother with them you end up having a horrible experience.
Even at 15.99 a month, that's only 191.88 a year. If you pay 80 bucks for cable that's 960 dollars a year. MMORPG's are one of the cheapest form of entertanment on earth.

Make no mistake, MMORPG's are not games, they are hobbies. If you have a job, you'll need to give up watching TV in order to play one. You'll be better off for it.

the newer rpg will prefeer DX9 callabre gpu (24-bit floating point [FP] pixel & 32-bit FP vortex pipelines with programmable logic capacity.) Your antique $30 GF2 gpu will be nice for email and browser type games, but the up and coming games will need FX 5600 + or Radeon 9700 + gpu. The more or less standard in gpu is the R9800pro (near $250) though it should drop in price this summer when the pci express gpu are retailing.
Also DEFINATLY you will need more system memory, at least a single stick of 512MB sdram. If you have the Wxp operating system you should go with a pair of 512MB (about $80 each.) Vs the single 512MB for W98.2.
Mixing older memory with newer memory is not wise, and new DDR memory does not play well with older sdram.
btw, the P4 2.8GHz E cpu is now about $175 and while requiring a motherboard (mobo) upgrade your P3 is using it will definatly make the DX9 gpu shine. Within the next four months many high-end gamers will be selling off their P4 cpu and DX9 gpu to recover some funds to buy the price premium pci express mobo/cpu/gpu systems.
Your 1GHz cpu & 32MB gpu with 256MB sdram is more in line with the orriginal basic EQ, AC1, Lineage type games. There are lap tops now with 2 and 3X beter performance than that. Definatly avoid the MX series of gpu (non-gaming gpu.)
An important consideration in gaming is your hard drive (HD.) It is where basic gaming data is stored. You need alot of free space on that hard drive to store new installs and updates, and a fast (rpm spin) for the game to access that data and load it into memory for gameplay. The current standard is 7500rpm sata HD. Many are eager for the upcoming sata300 hd, though that may not be this year.
To just try out gaming AC2 has a free two week trial (880MB download from fileplanet.com with a 80MB patch) where you can check out a large world (no zoning between adjacent zones,) and you can get used to the hunting of various monsters, and check out it's nooby dungeons (huge experience on completion.) Easy to get to about level 20 in just a couple days. And AC2 will play nice on your 1GHz cpu/ 32MB gpu. Though you may have to disable sound to get decent latency in game (less lag.) Many of the upcoming games want 3d sound cards. Also in AC2 you can buy a subscription key for about $15 next month, bypassing the $50 CD purchase most other games require. I think it's $13 / mo thereafter subscription.
If you think a +800MB client is excessive, some of the newer rpg are 5 and 6 CDs worth of data (+3GB.)
AC1 is an ok choice though I think you can get away with EQ.
Don't upgrade your system yet.First looking at it you need a whole new rig to enjoy the upcoming and some already released mmorpgs.
Play this games see if you like mmorpg then plan to upgrade. You are lucky that this summer new generation graphics cards are coming out which are promised by all indications to blow the current ones away.
So you should be able to pick the current generation cards in a few months time for very little.

Sorry, no way is going to the movies cheaper than an MMORPG.
If you pay $15 and play an MMORPG for 1 hour a day, that is 30 hours of entertainment in a month. About .50 cents per hour.
A movie is 2 hours, heck, lets say 3, at $6 (matinee price) that is $2 per hour.
Then consider people play MMORPG's for 100+ hours a month, you are looking at .15 cents per hour or less.
But, there are cheaper forms of entertainment. Buying game and playing it for hours can eventually get the price below that of an MMORPG, but it is difficult...
Then you could compare to free forms of entertainment... going to the park, play basketball, etc...
So, it is not the cheapest, but definately not the most expensive.
I do agree with Clever_Glove re: a cheap form on entertainment if you factor in bang for buck per hour. For me, living in the UK, anything quoted in dollars is significantly cheaper i.e. $15.99 is roughly £8.88 (£9.00 for arguments sake). My broadband connection is £25.00 so for £34.00 per month (£8.50 per week) I have excellent entertainment at my fingertips.
Remember that you're paying a flat rate fee e.g. you pay the same if you play an hour a week or 54 hours per week.
If you're not working i.e. student, at school, unemployed, then yes, it is slightly more expensive than other forms of entertainment. But buck for buck, it is cheap.

The bitch for MMOG's is having to upgrade your Pc - now that is a lot of downpayment (taking into account depreciation - the value of said item over a period of time, taking into account maintenance, effluxion of time and obsolence).
If you work, then compared to many other forms of entertainment i.e. drinking, eating out (heck, how much does your daily lunch cost? Think how much you would save if had a pack lunch), grabbing a Starbucks coffee, smoking, etc etc, then a monthly sub is peanuts relatively speaking. My EQ sub used to be around sub £20 for 3 months play. I used to query my credit card company and remark, "Is that all?".
Man! I remember in the days before flat rate dial-up fees, getting £200+ telephone bills due to mudding. I whined and bitched about the cost and a friend turned around and said, "You're earning, aren't you?". He had a point. I could afford it - didn't mean I necessarily liked paying it!
In the days before flat-rate competition. It truly sucked.

P.s. College students. Don't give me "You're poor" routine. I went to college and can honestly say that I pissed up my grant against the wall, so to speak. In fairness to US students, there are -no- such things as grants. However, the UK is rapidly heading that way. But I know that you piss your money against the wall
