Graphics - dull landscapes and great chars

StereoviewerStereoviewer Member Posts: 238

I´m interested in this game, but from the many screenshots I´ve seen (on warcry and other sites) the landscapes look really dull compared to Final Fantasy XI, World of Warcraft, Dragon Empires or Ryzom (to name a few). I didn´t see anything resembling a forest, just some trees scattered around some plains. The characters, monsters, buildings and indoor environmenst look great though. Do you thinbk there is any chance they will improve this thing about trees, forests and landscapes?

The graphics are awsome and leave Ryzom lagging far behind, give it a try.

Lineage 2 has some of the most beautiful landscapes I have seen in a mmorpg, maybe the shots you have seen have just centered on the characters rather then the scenery.  Having played FFXI for a couple months I can say for sure that has god awful scenery in comparison.

Well, I would have to say that the Lineage 2 landscapes are pretty impressive from what I have seen so far.  They seem to be more detailed than some of the games you have listed, but that of course is just my opinion.  Maybe you should look around a bit more image

Hi, and thank you for your answers. The screenshots I´ve seen are from the Lineage 2 site, Gamespot and Warcry (wich have ~400 screenshots of the game). I didn´t see any real forests on any of them, just some trees here and there. I know, it sounds silly, but one of the reasons I´m interested in the other games I mentioned is their diverse landscapes with both forests and plains, mountains and lakes. The trees in Lineage 2 most of the time feel tiny (I´d like to see some rubust trunks once in a while), and yes, the space is too wide between them, and they are too few. Imagine a dense and deep forest like the ones in Lord of the Ring, and you might get my point. If I by any chance DID see the wrong screenshots, I´d be happy if you posted some ingame screenshots here (I don´t know if it violates some NDA or something though).

yeah wow man... you totally saw some funky SS's then.. their landscape's are the best I've seen in an online RPG

Well I guess I can see the thing about the trees being a bit far apart for a forest since I haven't seen a super densely wooded area.  The size of the trees however is just fine.  Many of them are just HUGE and even the smallest ones I have seen in game are pretty large.  They are also very detailed with tons of little branches and such.  In fact the mother tree is almost as big as the elven city.  image

I don't have any hosting to put some pictures up here but I have some amazing scenery shots.  One in front of some huge colorful trees NE of Gludio village as well as one of the massive waterfalls and lake between the dark elf and elven lands.  I also have one out in a field of flowers and scrub just a ways out of Gludio.

They really did an amazing job with the landscapes.  Mountains are huge and can be seen from vast distances.  Other then Dark and Light I haven't seen a game that does it so well.

Why do people keep claiming DnL has good graphics? Man When I was in the beta it was completly hiddeous... I mean the land was perfectly horizonal and the characters looked worse then EQ at its release...

I think Lineage 2 has some of the best overall graphics to date... With DE topping it in the landscape (that shit looks realistic!)... IF EQ2s get increased (they are claiming artificial lighting is making everything look like plastic) then it "might" be the best when released...

You have to consider the point and click interface of L2, with a very dense forest it would be difficult to navigate.

If this is really what you want then yes, check out dark & light along with dragon empires, both have decent forests.

I agree with the dull graphics on the landscape or at least of what I have seen through my beta testing.  The character graphics are excellent.  I just wish there was more options to change character appearance.  Overall its looking very good.

Well, I'll ask Mr. Geist if he would be willing to let me email him some Screen Shots and I will post them up.

    Giest... the above. : )

I have taken a hand ful of screen shots while playing the game because I passed by such beautiful landscapes that I had to take a screen shot of them.

Those are my views... seen through a broken glass.

I think the landscape is nice in some areas.  With full graphics options on, the waterfalls look amazing, but the grass still looks ugly like a messy paintjob.  You can add a "decoration layer" which adds a layer of plants that stick out which are nice, but it's not lush environment.  I'd also like it more if there was more details even tho i may lag in those areas.

  • MistiMisti Member Posts: 724

Yeah we need to get some screenshots up here.  If you see some of the good ones of the landscapes you still wont grasp how beautiful and realistic the landscape is but you will have a much better idea.

No other mmorpg has done better to date imo.

First off before I forget, since the point and click interface was mentioned, I HATE it. God it's horrible, most annoying thing having to click every 3 seconds when you want to go on a long travel. The world's big too, that's nice, but the clicking.... *twitches* so... much... clicking...

But I digress, onto the topic. Since the post is about 'graphics' and not what makes the game good. I'll avoid preaching on how gameplay > graphics. Also since it's about the landscapes and not so much the character models, I'll avoid lecturing on how the female dark elves are nothing more than soft core porn wrapped up in leather bondage straps (gamer pr0n, hoorah), and just stick to the landscapes...

In any game I test I always make sure to get a good look at what parts of the world are explorable. I run the game on full graphic settings and it does look pretty decent, though it's not 'immersive' imo. I have seen better, though I have a high standard for the kind of environment I'd personaly prefer in an mmorpg. I'm glad it's not like SB where everything looks the same, and their art department did a nice job in making it feel like yer actualy changing locations and the background isn't just scrolling by like in an old Tom and Jerry cartoon. I do admit, I still have a fair share of the world left to explore, but so far I havn't really seen anything that's caught my eye for more than .5 second as I run by it.

Also I feel the mob placement is also part of the landscape so I'll go a little bit into that. I like a game where you can explore and the monsters are scattered about, but not so dense that you can't leave the path for fear of death. Which is the case in Lin2, there's monsters pretty much at every spot along the path, where ever you go. There's no 'wild life' like birds over head, maybe a deer, or a rabbit, animals that are there just for the soul purpose of BEING there, instead it's only monsters. I hated that about DAOC as well. It's just monsters, everything out there is just for killing, or getting killed by. Which kinda brings down the environment when yer walking through the woods coming up on a very peaceful looking pond and scattered around it are mob type A and mob type B for that area, which are just glammerized versions of the previous mobs, accept with different art and different type of trees near them.

    Peace,

         Dracius

How come people claim L2 gfx are great? Its not even DX 9 compliant and its based on a 2-3 years old Unreal Engine. If you think thats great then your gfx standards cant be very high.

  • RaptorStormRaptorStorm Member Posts: 312

Actually the engine is over five years old but the Unreal Engine has been updated or it wouldn't require anything higher then a 166Mzh processor and 16megs of ram and only 100mb of HDD space (which is what Unreal required when it came out). Of course Unreal recommended a 200MHz MMX cpu and a whole 32megs of ram and 450mb of HDD space, so I think it is safe to assume that some changes have been made.

Funny too, the game was still choppy on my 200mmx and now my PC's front side bus is faster then the CPU speed they recommend.

Yeah, over a gig of ram, amd athlon xp 2800, so on and so forth, and the game still chunks slightly on the high settings. I just tuned down the viewing distance tho and it runs fine now.

As far as the 'good' graphics, well I already said my bit about that =B

Wow a thread about trees...  So, does this game have good char mods or is it corny anime chars like FFXI?

If its true that when you drop a cat it lands on its feet or if you drop toast it lands butter-side down... what happens if you strap toast to a cats back and drop it?

how about searching for some screenies and make your own decision. In my opinion it's a bit anime style, especially dwarf girls with their big eyes are anime typical anime chars.

You just answered yer own question. If you've seen FFXI, you've seen this game. Same style of graphics, course the character models are a lot sluttier. You can tell their art department doesn't get out much. Female dwarves = 11yr old school girls. Don't look a thing like dwarves, just little girls. Graphics do have a nice clean look to them, but beyond that, bleh.

Besides, what matters more, GAMEPLAY or graphics? Because in 3 months the graphics will be outdated. Since most ppl like to play mmorpg's for a while, odds are if yer only there cause of the graphics and not the content, you won't be there long. *cough eve cough*

    stereoviewer,

Sorry mate!  , the screenshot don' t do justice the landscapes & whole environment for that matter.

I haven't seen any densely wooded areas (although these would hamper the slaughering !), but it not dull.. you mountains , cliffs, beaches,  large open plains & swamps On top of that   farms, houses & windmill etc, & light is very good with gentle fall of night, sunspots .

That before I mention the gameplay joys...
