I wouldn't put to much stock in it. A lot of games say they will port to console and after the game comes out for PC you never hear about it again.

    Here's the word on the subject from Mark Jacobs;

    Folks,

While a shared persistent world between the 360 and the PC is well within our abilities for us to do (we showed that at E3), I see no reason to actually do an RvR-centric game like WAR that way. While few problems are insurmountable, in the end the key is that we would have to have both platforms be equal (not equivalent) in all ways to really pull that off. If they are not equal, then one platform would have the advantage in RvR warfare against the other and that would be very bad.

Thus, I can say, without any hesitation, that is no way that we will have a shared persistent world between the PC and the 360 should we ever create a 360 version of WAR. Right now our focus is on the PC version and keeping that game right on schedule (which we have done so far).

And yes, personally, I do care.  I want to play this game with true MMO fans and PC gamers, not XBOX gamers who think they're badasses coz they're good at Halo.

asuperman quick question first, you from Beechmont?

    Ok back to subject

Do I care if it was GOING to 360? hmmm

Well I dont care in one sense because I dont have a 360.

On the other hand, there is some sense of pride in owning a good pc and playing pc games.
Its kind of like, everyone and there mother has a computer and a nintendo. My rednecker brother in law has a 360 but he doesnt know jack about mmo's or computers or anything really computer related.

This is kind of how I see it. Everyone has a Mustang and I have a McClaren.
I dont really want the mustang nubs racing with me and the Mclaren/Bugati/Ferrari owners.

I know it sounds elitest and maybe it is because I feel like Im an upper class gamer :P
People who play pc games and even mmos can be big enuf nubs all on their own.
I dont need the Console Nubs joining in.

I sure hope not, I thought it was bad to see how bad some "gamers" on PC online titles could be, but wow, when I tried playing console games online, that was a whole new ballgame, never met such obnoxious people in my life.

Damn your elitist nature! image  Really tho, there is a whole different culture about PC gaming.  It's like you said, everyone and their brother has consoles.  I remember I got a NES the first month they came out...I was six.  So aside from it seeming like you would have to dumb down the gameplay in this in order for the platforms to be on and equal playing field, it would also really kill the culture PC gamers have built and grown to love.
  • JoliustJoliust Member Posts: 1,329

I feel the same way. I think it is also the community. I left consoles because I don't like playing alone or against a computer. Single player games are not my thing at all. Even though consoles can play over the internet now adays there still isn't that same sense of community you get with a PC. I don't know what it is, maybe all the separates us from consolers is a keyboard and mouse.

There is no difference between the maturity of internet gamers and X-Box gamers.

If you hold some inflated dellusion along the lines of this, then you simply have not played enough games.

Honestly, the X-Box players and PC gamers wouldn't be on the same servers anyway, so I'd personally love a console port.  At this point in my life, computer gaming as a whole has throughly pissed me off with the constant adaptations and pricy parts.

Why would they have to "dumb down" game?  You can use a mouse.  You can use a keyboard.  The graphics engine could certainly handle it.  Only possibly slight is the lack of vocal communication, and it's not like they couldn't easily come up with a system for that.

No, you don't sound elitist.  Just stupid.

Maturity wasn't the issue.  It's the culture in general.  I have a PC, PS2, XBOX, and (up til I moved recently) Gamecube.  While I'm primarily a PC gamer, I've owned every major system available in the states since '85.  So I have nothing at all against consoles or console gamers.  My point is that my experience playing online with/against console gamers and PC gamers is two completely different worlds.  PC gamers are typically immersed in the history, community and technology of the genre itself whereas your typical console gamer just wants to get online to showcase his/her skills.

I think a lot of it also has to do with how long online console gaming has been available.  MMOs have been on the scene for well on a decade, whereas online console gaming only really broke ground in the past couple years.  There hasn't been nearly as much time for the culture to develop as it has for online PC gaming. So while I'm fairly confident, playing on a PC platform MMO, most people will know what I'm talking about when I refer to other MMOs, use common gaming jargon or give instructions to a group, console gamers would just be confused as to what is going on.  Not because they're any less intelligent or mature, but because they are not part of the culture of PC MMOs.  That is my point.

No difference in maturity, hmm. I dont think I mentioned maturity as a reason.
I dont even think I hinted to maturity. Honestly, the X-Box players and PC gamers wouldn't be on the same servers anyway, so I'd personally love a console port.  Actually its possible that pc gamers and console users WOULD be on the same servers if this were to happen. Supposedly Age Of Conan will be available to console and pc users on the same servers. At this point in my life, computer gaming as a whole has throughly pissed me off with the constant adaptations and pricy parts. No, you don't sound elitist. Just stupid.
I wonder if this is where your "bias" against pc's come from and why you felt you had to defend console gamers and call me stupid.
There is a difference in players between console players and pc gamers.
Obviously its not a "maturity" difference or "inteligence" difference. Plenty of stupid and inteligent people play pc games and consoles. But "consolers" are at the very least more naive about the internet, mmos and the culture therein.I think toby explained the difference much better than I could of hoped to.

Whatever, logan.  I don't know what you expected people to take from the
phrase "upperclass gamer", besides the fact that you are better than them.  No,
it's not possible that console and PC gamers would share the same
world, simply because the developers specifically said they wouldn't if
a console version was ever released.  I don't know why you'd assume WAR
would possess same-server implementation simply because AoC does, but I
fear the answer would only leave me sad and confused so I'll leave it
be.   Yeah, console gamers have less experience with MMOs.  Let's KEEP
OUR GAMES AWAY FROM THEM!  Brilliant!  While we're at it, why not just
keep out all first-time MMO players to begin with?  We don't need to
waste our precious RvR on these "lesser gamers".

Toby..look, I'm not stupid.  I realize that the majority of console gamers probably have never played an MMO in their lives, and probably don't know the ends and outs of the way online mechanics work.  This however, does not mean we should horde away our games like trolls under a bridge so they can't defile them.  First of all, we wouldn't be playing on the same servers, so many of the problems you listed would be irellevant.  Honestly, if you have such a huge problem spending a few seconds to explain "MMO jargon", then perhaps you shouldn't be playing a community game?  Or perhaps you can simply go find someone who has played long enough to know these things, and stop discriminating agaisnt those who don't?  I don't know..I mean..I always found people asking me what shit meant ingame.  It was never a big problem.  Took three seconds to type out a small explaination and it felt good helping people.

I just don't understand the logic behind what you guy's are asking for.  "They don't have experience playing our type of game, so let's make sure they never do!  Aha!" *begins twisting mustace*

    You wanna see the difference?

Play BF2 on your PC and then play it on the xbox. If you dont see the difference between those 2 communities then you are either not paying attention or brain dead.

Am I not in the circle? No, it's not possible that console and PC gamers would share the same

No shit sherlock... I was just making the point that its "POSSIBLE".
And IT IS PHYSICALLY POSSIBLE. I don't know why you'd assume WAR would possess same-server implementation simply because AoC does, but I fear the answer would only leave me sad and confused so I'll leave it be.
First off, see above. Seondly, I dont assume that it will ever be on ANY console....EVER. Yeah, console gamers have less experience with MMOs.  Let's KEEP
OUR GAMES AWAY FROM THEM!  Brilliant!  While we're at it, why not just
keep out all first-time MMO players to begin with?  We don't need to

OMG /tear. You understand. You really understand me.
ITS MINES!! ME PRECIOUS!!Your taking this way too seriously. I swear I can see you hyper ventilating as you typed out your response...asthma breather in hand, taking puffs between typing sentences. Me and toby may agree but were not the deciding factor to whether it will ever be on consoles, so why get so wound up about it. If at sometime in the future its released on console I wont lose any sleep over it.And Im not saying Im RIGHT OR WRONG. The idea of this great game being tossed to a general population makes me nervous. I mean think about it for just one second, a general population that would be much worse than WoW's when it was released. /shudder Its a feeling I have...there is nothing right or wrong about it.
Toby..look, I'm not stupid. But you are very angry. I suggest a combonation of deep tissue massage, a Macrobiotic diet and some serious NLP.

I realize what you're trying to say, and I guess It all came out a bit different than I intended.  I don't have a problem explaining things to people.  I've usually been the person in my guilds that spends most of his time helping the lowbies out.  I think what I'm saying is that a big part of my enjoyment in MMOs comes from playing within a community of like-minded people who are a fans of the genre themselves.  And I'm not saying I don't welcome new players to the community, since I'm pretty sure we were all purely console players at one point.  But I think a mixing of the two platforms, and their respective communities, on the same server would be ultimately detrimental to the enviroment the game creates.  That's more of the point I was trying to make.  Sorry if I sounded like a pompous ass. image

The psudo debate about what kind of people an xbox based mmo community would create... is irrelivant.

It's facts that matter. Everquest Adventures was tried on the console and it bombed. There will be no War for the xbox PERIOD.

just because one game didn't succeed on consoles do not mean they will never try again. After all FFXI was out for consoles before pc and that game is quite succesful (there is no data about how many subs are pcs and how many are consoles though, but a good mix is probable).

That is like saying "Dark & Light was an horrible game and bombed, therefore there will never be a Virtual World simulator type of game ever again".

Sorry, but your logic appear flawed. (Also EQOA was for the PS2, not for the X-Box)

Keep in mind the console market is H-U-G-E. 10 times bigger if not even more than the pc market, just check at some sales figures and notice how GTA sold like 65 MILLIONS COPIES before getting updated to AO rating?

So, the failures of previous projects WON'T stop companies from trying again. Nowadays, we are in a much better situation for it than past generation as all consoles come with internet connection built-in and most come with an hard disk, in addition adding a usb mouse and keyboard to one is no big deal, so bridging any kind of technical difficulties the consolers could have.

That being said, I could care less if they release WAR for the X-Box 360. I do not mind that much even if we would have united servers. I just hope we can have same language server though, playing with half players that speaks a language i can't even read, and can't understand what i say really suck big time.

That's not fact tho, that's speculation.  According to Mark Jacobs, there is a possibility of WAR being released for the 360, but it would be completely on separate servers from the PC platform version.

With the resources EA has, having the 360 see a console iteration is very possible.

    Thanks for everyones insight.

I just recently picked a 360 up, and I"m interested in playing some Console mmo's.

    especially WAR.
If not i'll just pick it up for pc.

If you've ever tried Everquest Adevnture's, it's a severly dumbed down game of the real EQ. That's what WAR on 360 would bring. Not to mention the fact that every single one of 360 live's online content is 2v2 based and, their only 4v4 game released on launch, was laggy as hell.

WAR on 360 would be a travesty with the amount they would cut back on. And even if they release an equal version of WAR for the xbox, how will they release expansions? If at all?

If anyone would have done a console version, WoW would have because their gameplay makes the most sense. If BLizz decided it wasn't worth it, what makes you think EA Mythic will think it's worth it?

-Final Fantasy XI, however, was the same exact version, for pc, Ps2 AND Xbox 360.

    - Maybe you didn't notice, but only people with Hard Disks can play MMorpgs on consoles. this is true for EQOA, for FFXI and would be true for WAR. so they would release expansions exactly they have been doing for normal MMogs, you need to buy a new box that get installed on top of the old one.

    - Blizzard has NEVER made a console games. Never. Not even diablo. The only console game they were making was Starcraft: ghost and it got canned. Now, however, they are tooling up for next-gen consoles. What tell you we won't see WoW for xbox 360 next year?

On the other hand EA, if not Mythic EA, has plenty of experience on all kind of consoles.

No, you're ASSUMING it would bring a dumbed down version.  You don't KNOW that they will, and trying to assert your opinion as fact only discredits your argument.  You should really have more faith in Mythic, because it seems like you think of them as a bunch of incompetant chickens with their heads chopped off.

If they wanted to release a console version, then it would most likely be great, simply because of the company behind it.  Also..why would you even CARE if it's a dumbed down version?  As long as you don't have to play it, you should have no problem with them making it.

This is just me being picky, but yeah, Bilzzard has made console games in the past.  They had a couple releases for SNES/Genesis back in the 90's with Rock n' Roll Racing and The Lost Vikings under their former name of Silicon & Synapse.  Same company, different name...they didn't change their name to Blizzard til 1994.  Not that that has anything to do with current technology, MMOs, next-gen consoles or this thread, but still...never say never =).

Blizzard also did manage to release StarCraft for the N64, I was looking over the N64's library yesterday actually and remembered seeing that and I certainly remember playing it on the N64. Blizzard has made some successful console endeavors.
