Lack of Maturity in WoW?

I have been playing WoW for about 3 months now and I see a lot of posts here that bash it and say its a bad community/immature players, etc. NOw I dont know if its my servers "Emerald Dream" and "Maelstrom" but I have nothing but a quality time on them with great RP and some great online characters I hang out with. Even in the towns all I see is a few item spammers, but thats to be expected in any MMO ( I guess all those crazy gnomis engineers gotta sell their stuff somehow) So I was wondering why all the complaints?

Thanks,

Aaron

  • Start a character on a normal PvP server horde side.  Then go to the crossraods and listen to local general chat.  Then, if you get out fast enough to prevent brain damage, come back here and tell us of your experiences. ;)

From what i've noticed after a week of playing (on the alliance side)... i've only noticed one idiot. And, of course, that one idiot was quickly shot down and out-logic'ed by 3 others.

It isn't as bad as everyone thinks it seems.

Well I haven't really experienced alot of immature people, but I have seen a few. At least WoW isn't as bad as Guild Wars, where they have "Naked Dance Parties" and other stupid stuff like that.

WOW has 7 million players, and they didn't get those numbers by only tapping the age 20+ crowd.  I'd bet that 80% of WOW's players are teens, heck, maybe some of them pre-teen.

I once played Alliance for a good while, until I found out a great majority of them are kids who think everything is funny. Compared to Horde in general, they do seem less mature. However, looking at all these posts, it happens anywhere quite often.

You're alliance, which I think tends to be better. The worst place was always IF for alliance, people who all "WTS <BOP Epic>!!!!" or when somebody who is new to the game asks for help with something they say "It's easy to solo noob, L2Play!!" or "It's in the Eastern Plague Lands!!"

From what I've seen, alliance on PvP servers is better. Like most people say: stand in The Barrens and listen to chat for 2 minutes at prime time...

Also, if you have never sat in 40 man raids with 30 kids that just came to WoW from their high school/Xbox 360, then you won't understand true pain. If you are on a PvP server and find yourself liking the WoW "community" so far, I recomend you never raid when you hit level 60.

Unless you are currently attending high school and think it is a good community of people, I think you would be quite repulsed by any of the 6 PvP servers I have been on.

One last thing: I quit WoW for the summer (and then some), but I'm back playing again (Thanks to zero worthwhile MMOs release in all of 2006-2007). There are way fewer people playing than there were this spring, so the smacktardism has gone down a fair bit. I have also never played on a PvE server, so I can't say what they are like.

And your source for this information is?

    Lets just make it up.

90% of people who complain about immaturity of WoW community are themselves immature.

Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS)
Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve

From what i've seen in IF so far it hasen't been very bad. I heard one pretty stupid conversation in SW but thats it.

Not on a PvP server, so I can't really comment.

Read my post. I said it wasn't "as bad" not that I was "liking" it. I still stand by that Anarchy online has the best community out of every game. However, just from looking at chat I haven't seen all of these idiotic kids that so many people seem to complain about. Haven't raided at all yet because i'm still new (playing for a week) to the game.

I'm in college. Also, I did hop on a PvP server, but not for long (other server was down for 30 minutes).

Like I said, i'm new to the game so I can only report on what I have personaly seen.

Sorry, I wasn't really directing my post at you. Your previous post just got me thinking, because of all the rude, crude, childish, etc. people I have had to deal with in WoW. I didn't mean to suggest that you are in high school, just that on all the servers I have been on I think you would have to be to enjoy the "community" of people there.

And as I've said, I have never played on a PvE server. For all I know they are 200% better than the PvP servers. I also strongly suspect that the type of people who would stay on a PvE server long term (The game is two years old now, correct?) would be a much different crew of people than 80% of the PvP server population.  I love PvP, but it seems most of the WoW PvE server people who post here have more positive things to say about the community...makes me almost want to switch to a PvE server. lol

    My thoughts.

I play on Uldaman, a nice server.  And up until you pvp, or complain about explotiing, the crowd is mature.

As long as you are used ot people trying to make a funny joke on the LFG channel, it will be fine.  People will help you and etc.

However, talk about pvp and you will find yourself repulsed by your replies.

I have about 350 hours into WoW right now. Due to the negativity on these boards about the immature crowd, I actually went into it with a bias that I was gonna see a lot of kid lamers everywhere.

It has actually been quite the opposite on Dunemaul (pvp server).

Everyone I have met up with has seemed really cool and at least decently mature.

Any real lameness I have seen on general chat is shot down by several people within minutes.

I can't speak for horde, but as far as alliance is concerned on this server, most people have been cool. I certainly have been corpse camped on occasion, but nothing I had to ever log off for.

Maybe it is real bad on other servers, maybe it is just the haters on this board.

And before someone goes asking if I am 16 years old and not being able to tell, I am a 30 yr old military vet.

Yes, I would have to say a child spots "normal" for a realm and goes straight to it, so RP?  You lucky *censored*!  I've come across my fare share of both mature AND immature players.  Some that find it necessary to fill the chat window with "zomg, noobs are in this battlefield" rather than focusing on the goal and doing what ever is necessary say what NEEDS to be done.  In all the mumbo jumbo these immature players utter, they fail to say what needs to be said and believe that just because this game has been around for a while, it means everyone knows EXACTLY what they're doing...no no no.  By the way, terms like "zomg" and "noob" are highly unintelligent words of lingo.  It's sad that people can say "LFG 4 ZG" and manage to sound JUST like everyone else.  Which sounds more warming and trust worthy to you "WTS Bolt of Silk Cloth PST" or "Selling Bolt of Silk Cloth, Please send tell/whisper!"  There-in, I guess you can say it's surrounded by laziness and immaturity.  You can ignore that last part however, haha, I seemed to have ranted too far.  However, I've come to be aware of an all-time new for immature players "class/race prejudice" *laughs pretty hard*  You gotta be kidding me.....and yes I HAVE seen it in General Chat or Party Chat

Heh, yeah I love it when people pull random percentages out of their ass. Anyway, considering WoW's playerbase largely consists of half-brained pre-teens and teens with oversized egos who scream for class nerfs left, right and centre because they don't know how to play their own class properly, it's not a surprise WoW's community sucks. (And I'm a teen, by the way.) Most of the people in WoW are self-centered dickheads , I'm glad I left that community. I met some great people there, but sadly they were very far and few between.

im with you on that...i have played with 13 year olds that are as mature as a 30 year old....and 30 year olds that are as immature as 13 year olds.....so it's all about maturity level not age

i'm 16, when i started to raid, i can say that i was reeaally immature, and was only out for loot. I soon learned though however, that i needed to shape up and act my age, if not, older.  I did this, and in doing so got into one of the top guilds, on my server.  I have seen my fair share of immaturity in teens AND in the 20+ range.  I totally agree, its maturity level, not age.  I guess in a way this game made me act my age, and not an immature little kid. ( i know that sounds stupid but..yeah)

Azgalor and Spinebreaker are not that bad. I am in a raiding guild on Spinebreaker whee most members are 13-16. We do not act like morons during raiding, apart from occasional arguements over vent about something or other. Alliance, I would say, have the most immature people because younger people pick them for the "pretty" races. Overall, it is really not that bad. Barrens chat is not that bad either, during prime time, it is just some stereotype that people fling around.

I  agree with this guy.  Now don't get me wrong if you get killed over in the barrens by a horde... chances are they are gonna spit and fart on you.  It seems to me the reason why the horde are played by kids are because they want to be a monster.  I just quit Runescape after playing on and off sence release of the game and decided to give this game a try...  I play on the lightning hoof server and I have to say that for the most part all the people I have actually talked to are very nice and easy to get along with.  Unlike RS community where they hate on you just for not knowing the exact new price for a piece of gear.  Can't expect to know all the items if you aren't a merchant right?  So I have to say i have no complaints about the WoW community.
  • I met a lot of immature people but maybe I just got unlucky
  • baffbaff Member Posts: 9,457

I find it comparable with other games.

If you play at 4.30 pm on a weekday you will meet a load of kids.

Not that you could tell by playing with them. 95% of any guildmates I've ever had have been adults. Same in every game.

PvP is a tosser magnet. It's not an age thing, it's a confrontational thing.

I am Durotan  and Tanirus (sorry if I missed spelled them) but so far everyone has been real mature. No littel kiddys that I have seen messing thing up.  Which I was supprised being that a freind told me that thats what he ran into. Good luck for me.

It's funny to see people saying that all the "kids" pick Alliance for the pretty races, and then a post later, someone else says all the "kids" pick Horde so they can play a monster.

I've played two characters to 60 on a pvp server, Alliance(Sargeras) and 1 to 60 on a pve server, Horde(Anvilmar), and truth be told, I couldn't tell the difference between the two community wise. I've been /spit on by both Alliance, and Horde. I've had to deal with asshats on both sides, on both servers. If anything, I'd say it's worse on a pve server, because you have no real recourse when someone starts in with you.

There are a hell of a lot of people playing WoW, of all nationalities, walks of life, and age groups. To try lump them all together by side, or server is total rubbish. Same goes for saying they're all kiddies, or whatever.

As others have said, I've met teens that acted like adults, and adults that acted like spoiled children. I've met some pretty cool, and intelligent people in WoW. They aren't that rare. Yep, there be idiots there, but they're far from the majority, they're just the ones yelling the loudest. It's nothing new, and it sure as hell isn't unique to World of Warcraft.
