What do you think about the swear word changing programs in MMORPGs?
- Sometimes I say 'fuck'. Without a meaning, if I did something wrong, in most games the word changes to signs or another word like: love you. That's OK, but sometimes when I talk in Dutch, normal words are getting changed. Yesterday I said, you can go, but then in Dutch, je kunt gaan. The word kunt got changed, why? I couldn't figure out, it does not look like a swear word to me. This happens very much, not only if you talk Dutch.
What words should be banned, what words not?
- I think that some words should be allowed, like 'shit'. This isn't a very bad word, is it? Sometimes they ban words like shit and fuck from the game, but 'badder' words stay in. What words should be allowed?
Do you swear alot in MMORPGs?
- Do you swear? I don't really swear, sometimes, when I'm upset. Whem someone is stalking me and asking to join his group/guild. That irritates me.
Please say what you think about these 3 points.
The words fuck and shit are used for this topic, I don't say fuck and shit to you, you are my friend.

In your case, instead of saying "je kunt gaan" you could say "je k-unt gaan" or somesuch.
Note - I wouldn't advocate using swearwords in a public chat channel,
but in guild chat or a message to a friend then it often isn't a
problem.

I dont think that censoring programs 'should' be necessary and there should ALWAYS be a legal way to turn it off.
I don't get offended by people online saying those words, not even when they are directed at me, but I'm more likely to help people out and be friendly in mmo's, to people who can keep their calm and don't need to swear all the time.
When people keep swearing in every sentence I'm imagining some fat irritated kid behind a computer and I'm less likely to help them out.
To me it depends on the game. In a game that attracts a lot of younger people or that is in fact a tamer game (WoW comes to mind), then I suppose a filter is alright. I find filters and related rules extremely irritating in games where basically you are going around and murdering people. I mean, here we have murderers who are not allowed to swear, because we know that murdering people is cool, but swearing is unm ... bad 'mkay? Strikes me as preposterous, really. If you're going to design a game where people can lie, cheat, steal and kill with impunity, don't cheapen the immersion with a silly profanity filter.
It is more polite not to swear of course. The in-game vocabulaire system is usually english based and do not recognize Dutch words, that's why you often can't see them when typing or such. Some Dutch words are similar to english offensive words or others. Advertising in-game is most of the time against the game's politicy. So when you advertise in such game they usually block that message/word. For example; the Dutch word 'Kom' (translated in english, come) could be recognized as a variate of .com

That's too funny. Put a "c" insted of a "k" and google it
But yeah, the filters really are a joke in games becuse there are to many "1337" ways to get around 'em and they do screw up normal speech. But it makes the parent's feel better about the babysitter (used to be t.v., now it's mmo's), so go figure. That's probably why most games now give the option to turn filters on/off in settings.
Swear words are part of normal communication and intended for conveying emotion, so I believe that they can be very appropriate when used properly no matter how "profane". When people are killed on TV but the emotional response is cut off by a profanity filter, what children actually learn is that it's Ok to kill people because nobody seems to mind. And when swear words are used as fillers without any particular meaning, their impact on the viewer is equally nonexistent.
I played RuneScape, I know it sucks, but still, it was my first MMORPG. I played it with friends from school, so we talked Dutch together. But we coudln't say a sentence without the famous stars in it. Even if you added '-' or spaces to it.
Do you guys know a game where it's even harder to talk normal, in you language?

that's exactly what I thought of, EQ1 censoring it's own mob names...but you beat me to posting it
I don't think saying "shit" should be viewed any differently than saying "crap" or "poop." I don't think saying "fuck" should be any worse than saying "screw." The basis for those words being considered profane is seriously outdated and irrelevant.
I do try to avoid saying the "gd" word because there is an actual basis for that if you believe in God (I'm NOT trying to start a conversation about religon, please don't take it that way) but it doesn't upset me if others say it.
If there is a language filter, I turn it on.
It's alright for other people to swear, but I don't want to.
I can see where that would be strange.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
The whole idea behind the swear filter is flawed anyway seeing as they usually only check english (and as in your example pick up unrelated words from other languages).
Then again, I swear tonns in real life, but make a point out of never doing it in games. Mostly because the spontanity of it is lost anyway, but also cause it just looks silly I can be quite crude and harsh though. It's not about the words, but what you're saying.
I hate language filters in game, not because I swear a bunch, but because people think its suddenly "all right" to use curse words all the time, since its edited out. It causes much more of a problem than it solves.
To OP: "kunt", here, is probably considered by the language filter to be a derivative of the english term "cunt". Which is a derogative word, usually reffering to female genitalia, but also to particular women.

Wether this is "funny" or "bad" is up to the individual I guess. But I would definately not let my son play games if they teached him that kind of disrespect.
I don't mind swearing myself, especially in a game where you have to be 18 to play (like in most mmog's). But I have no objections against a swear filter if minors are playing it.
Games don't teach you to respect or disrespect people. People do. If you teach your son how to deal with the ugly aspects of life in a respectful manner he won't grow up to do disrespectful things. It's as simple as that.
I think a profanity filter to turn on/off is a must in mmorpgs especially as there could be some, for example teenagers, around who just overuse swearwords just to look good. Also, I don't think people get banned for swearing unless they deliberately bypass the profanity filters. Also shouldn't 'ffs' and 'wtf' be filtered in mmorpgs as they're basically indicating swearwords and what is the stance when someone swears on teamspeak in mmorpgs?
If im playing a mmo...i expect there to be some level of cussing (especially if it isnt a very RP-friendly game). It doesn't bother me, and if it does, thats what the on/off filter is for. Use it if it bothers you.
I don't really talk much to people who complain about cursing in online games unless its someoen who keeps spamming the F word and thats it. Then i would complain. But average talk, jesus come on. If cursing in online games "effects" you enough then don't play...or turn off chat, or something else that will put you in your comfy zone.
Just my 2 cents.
think you have to be 18 or over to play. I think most MMOs
require you to be of legal age in the country you live in to have an
account, but that account can be used by a minor child if you are their
guardian. You should never assume that the people you are talking
to, or who are listening to you on a public chat channel, are
adults. Parents should supervise their children's online time
but, for some reason, they often don't bother. I spurt out the
odd expletive IRL, but it never occurs to type naughty words in a
public chat channel in a game. I have, in private chat or guild
chat, where I know everyone, though. Maybe I'm just shy.
