Because they do not like our leader. And our leader represents us. So there for they have every right to hate us.
But that is not the point. Why do americans hate the French?
Okay, if you don' know the answer to this, you obviously have not read much history or talked to many French. I will give you some hints, American Revolution and WW II. And, just for the record, the French disliked us long before Bush was in office.
WTF is with all the "I / they / we hate..." threads?

People are retarded, unfortunantly.
What greater tribute to free will than the power to question the highest of authority? What greater display of loyalty than blind faith? What greater gift than free will? What greater love than loyalty?
I personally know some frenchmen and they don't hate the US. Some of them feel having emotions for the US is too much credit.
Seriously. They don't hate the US. Do they have reason to? As far as they care the US is still an ally. A questionable ally at times, but an ally nontheless.

Going along daendor's very valid answer, I would also like to simplify it as such: the French will have no qualms about begging for your help, but don't be surprised when they pretend they don't know you when you ask in return.

They are an unreliable ally and have betrayed or hindered the U.S. on many an occasion. In contrast, the U.S. has sacrificed half a million lives defending France in past wars.
Basically, if France or the world has a problem, the U.S. steps in to shoulder the burden while France both benefits from this and berates the U.S. at the same time.
The French have made plenty of sacrifices for the United States and continue to do so right up to this very day. Bring it on down now.

Few in number and limited in their activities, this little band of American ambulance drivers in France is of course insignificant when compared with the tens of thousands of young Frenchmen who crossed the ocean as soldiers and sailors to help America in 1777. To the valor and devotion of these Frenchmen we owe our very existence as an independent nation, and nothing that Americans have done for France during these last hard years of trial can be thought of without embarrassment in relation with what Frenchmen did for us in those unforgettable years of our peril from 1777 to 1781.

Please read up on the American Revolution.
Actually, I was hoping for something a little more recent, since they "continue to do so right up to this very day".

As is stated, there would be no USA if France did not help.
I am not saying let this be the one deed they did and we help them forever, but when the USA is being attack and invaded, France WILL help. They just, like alot of people, think that this War on Terror is pety. Why help a pety thing?

I think the U.S. military has done more for France than give them a few "ambulance drivers". This Harvard professor is either misquoted, misinformed, or lying.
People seem to have a terribly hard time grasping that there is no nation in the world, and never was that did things out of altruistic motivations. The USA aren't an exception to that rule...
Fighting in WW1 and 2 was in the best interest of the USA. France helping the US to become a independent nation was in their best interest.
So if you want to keep scores for "doing what's right no matter what" then it's 0-0.

They can't convince French women that razors really are meant to be used.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
But that is not the point. Why do americans hate the French?

So I should hate the entire populace of any country/nation based on whether I like their leader or not? Thanks for the wisdom
