I'd just like to point that if they haven't done something correct in EIGHT YEARS, then folks, it's time to put a fork in 'em.
As others in this thread have done I dismissed the game after noticing that it's being produced by Turbine. The above two sentences ought to help explain why I think that it's just peachy to do so.
Not to be a smart arse or anything, just saying...

That may be...but Turbine is, imo, the only developer that can create a game world able to keep me addicted for some time.
I, and every other AC1 vet, feels that the quality produced by Turbine far outweighs their blunders (read AC2 and DDO).
Sure it could be crap, but then again Turbine has the potential to create a great game. I cant say the same for Blizzard or SOE.
And about the click-and-watch fighting....go play AC1 or another game that implements it correctly and learn. Its not bad at all when you are actually occupied with other things. Turbine knows how to do it right (One of the few things they know how to do correctly), without it becoming a borefest. Its not like EQ2 where you NEED abilities and skills to make the game somewhat interesting.
Of course, i could be totally wrong and Turbine will produce another lackluster title. Perhaps im clinging to a shred of hope that should have been lost years ago when Turbine continuously allowed UCM'ing and went on to give birth to a terrible sequel.

Yeah, but the release date was about 2 years ago. We were super-hyped about it at that time. Now it gets a big yawn.

When you are dealing fandom like that, that's scary. Star Trek Online is going to be facing the same problems that LOTR will be facing I think as well. Star Wars fandom can be scary at times and SOE really screwed up that built in customer base by how they handled that game but I think you are on another level when it comes to LOTR and Star Trek fans at times. Elvish and Klingon language sections of these fandoms just adds a whole new series elements that I don't think any game company is prepared to even handle or approach. If that is the core base that will stick around through most problems or are most likely will be providing the most hardcore feedback I kinda feel for the developers of these games.
Back on topic. I don't think LOTR will flop. To big of a name for that. However Turbine has arguably deserved negativity directed at it. Will it have lasting power is the bigger issue I think. Their track record isn't to pretty when you look at Asheron's Call 2 and DDO (still pissed I wasted money on this game after looking forward to it).
I think its going to suck, theres no competition between factions like their is in WoW and no pvp. No PvP makes a borrinnng game, and even more boring with no evil characters. I think its going to appeal to Roleplayers and hard out LOTR fans.

Well, I think everyone here needs to consider what flopping means. They can push a lot of units but that doesn't necessarily make it a success, especially in the world of mmorpgs where they need something like 18 months of subscriptions (hearsay number, I don't know) to be successful.
I think the LOTR title will sell it initially. I can't comment on how well it will due because, hey, gotta play it first. What I do think is that they missed the boat for the franchise. The movies will be 3 years old and another quality franchise movie (either the Hobbit or a lame "prequel" based on disjointed tales from the Silimarillion) won't be ready in time for a tie-in.
let me start by saying... the movies sucked big time... alright on to the game... I think like many games it'll have its community of LotR fans however it may be one of the opperotunities to be the biggest Role Playing MMO on the market right now by not having PvP they remove part of the 'omfg I pwned jo gewd jo sux0rz' crowd though alienating some it brings in others ... Turbine might make it a bit less appealing but, it may be interesting since those of us not in the Beta know very little about it besides what they want to tell us... not sure how to take what they said about crafting... but anyway back to the point, It could honestly go either way I'd say though I really doubt it will 'flop' and i doubt it'll be in the top 10 for subscribers
I'll stick with WoW. I'm looking forward to trying WarHammer. But this RPG looks like its a wanna be of many combined. True they are good in making movies/books, in the gaming industry, LOTR in general is not that popular.
Eh. Depends on too many factors. For the wider market at least. Stuff like how polished the game is at launch, how much fun the early levels are, how well it dances around canonical LOTR without stepping on too many toes, and the ammount of content it has (another failing of DDO?) Stuff like that will be the measure of the game's success.
I don't expect LOTRO to be liked on MMORPG.com very much at all. Just looking over its design would tell you that much. It isn't sandboxy and it isn't hardcore PVP, apparently. If those are your criteria (and they seem to be for many MMORPG.com posters) then there isn't any point in talking about it.
You can also just look at this thread. Some people hated DDO for putting the twitchy combat in (and so dislike Turbine and LOTRO by association). Some people want the twitchy combat in. People are saying they want something different, some people want something from longer ago, etc.
That may be...but Turbine is, imo, the only developer that can create a game world able to keep me addicted for some time.

I agree that AC1 was a great game, but I have come to look at AC1 as a fluke. Over the years they have managed to get one thing right and have - IMO - not been able to reproduce it.

Buddy, you need to frame that one and send it to every gaming company known. It may encourage better games...
The LotR Online is not based on the movies but the books. The books have been around so long that most games we play with elves and dwarves pay homage to LotR in some way. There is a large audience of Tolkein fans that would pick up the MMO for the first time. There's also a large audience of MMO players in general who try anything. The movies weren't so far away from this anyway. We all have the dvds and TNT still shows them all in a row sparking interest.
However, it may not attract so many people just because they taking a realistic approach to the game, no magic, no stylized anime designs with bright colors. There may not even be some major places such as Gondor or Mordor. Intelectual properties also have one very big problem, you can NEVER be the hero of the world. Wanna be the ringbarrer? nope. Wanna become king of Rohan or Gondor? nope. Wanna kill Sauron? nope. What you do will never matter. All you can do is level up, gather items and watch the story from the outside.
So what will this game bring to us? More of the same, except with Tolkein surroundings.
Give a man fire and he''s warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he''s warm the rest of his life.
I think it will do bad, my friend is in beta and i was watching him play and talk to them on the game, and everyone in that game is to serious, he was joking around with them and they got all pissed off. So with out a good community what is an mmo...
Turbine is the company that rightfully deserves every discontempt
Not only that pulling the plug on AC2 right after they sold the expansion was one of the stinkiest moves in MMO history. But their other jewel DDO , alienated the whole generation of D&D players.
Next move , Lord of the rings
Or should i say Warcraft of the rings !
That is right LOTR is the most blatant WOW clone we seen until now.
I dont think it will flop like DDO did. D&D players would be playing DDO if it was not such piece of shit. And i think LOTRO will not be a bad game in a way.
It will strongly apeal to fast food mmo players. Just as WOW did.
But it will alienate most of LOTR crowd , that is for sure.
On the end it will come as vanilla WOW.
Nothing I would play for sure
If it sucessfully clones WoW, it should be a rather sucessful and popular game.
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...

i agree. i was goin to buy this game untill i found out u couldnt be an evil char. that pissed me off!
also once u hit max lv. most of the time u just either raid or pvp! or raid to pvp! but u cant now, all in all im happy that they didnt allow u to become ny main char (3,000 Frodos...No Thanks!)

All those people who buy anything that says "Lord of the Rings" in front of it will play it. With the movie release it seems they have been trying to milk LOTR for all it's worth, and even if this game turns out being amazing I might not buy it just to get away from LoTR.

Conversely the lack of PvP and the 'monstering' system give the game a great deal of appeal to me. Somewhere a bit more free of the griefing, competetive tosspots that drag any game with any sort of PvP element down into the gutter.
No I don't think it will flop at all. Will it get WOW numbers? Unlikely anything will do that for awhile. But, it should be interesting to see how the Burning Crusade does, will that revive and renew WOW or just make people hungry for something new and different that has elements they've become familiar with through WOW. LOTRO isn't due out till spring, last I saw. All the little dark elves should have burned their way through the expansion and be looking for something new, timing city
Huge potential playerbase for the grandaddy of all fantasy settings. If they can pull in good numbers at launch then release new content regularly as they have with DDO, well then, I expect they'll do just fine.
I don't think it can flop- they got something like a 1/4 million people that applied for the LOTR beta. And that game- with it's name recognition- is gonna draw a big influx of newbies into the MMO world that have never even heard the words "beta application"
Gamers are gonna make WarHammer the big hit of next year- but I've read that people are predicting LOTR to be a close 2nd . I've seen numbers of a million box sales mentioned a few times for LOTR- which honestly astounds me becauseTurbine is so notoriously crappy in the advertising/PR department.
Timing too can help that game. It's 2nd quarter- and if it's late in the 2nd quarter- Burning Crusade will have been out for 5 months and everyone will have maxed their toons to level 70 by April and they will have be bored out of their minds (yet again) and they might give LOTR a try.
Box sales are gonna make it a hit. Longevity wise- I have no clue. AC/ Asheron''s Call is the best MMO of all time just like alot of people have said. Turbine added new content and dungeons in ALLl of their monthly patches over the years and Live Events were held several times a year but they don't do that with their newer games so who knows how long their initial success will last.
And just remember that 100k in box sales is considered a moderate success in the MMO world and anything over 200k is considered a huge success by the industry standards. There's no way it will not hit that 200k mark.
Originally posted by parrotpholk Do I think it will flop...Yes most likely. Its a lack of faith in Turbine more than anything.
Agreed. in the right hands, the franchise could succeed...but Turbine hasn't proven they can do anything right lately. Maybe this will be their big comback....
I'm not rooting against it or anything, I just see the odds of success of a 12-1 as opposed to other games like AOC or Vanguard which are more like 6-1 or so
