MUD

Is there anyone (except me) of the MMORPG-gamers who still play MUD (or MUG, whichever)?
If there is, which MUDs do you play?

I warmly recomend Lensmoor (lensmoor.org Port:3500) for anyone who wants to try it out.

Funny you should ask that..  Today I just started playing Mysteria Magica and it seems to be highly populated with 50+ players (to me thats a high population now a days with all the heavy duty graphical games).   I used to play muds 5+ years ago but with graphical mmo's i got away from it.

Being away from muds for so long I feel a little disoriented without the visuals to guide me though.  I'm sort of lost in a pure text environment image   Thankfuly Zmud or Portal have auto mappers

    How come you don't anymore?

I quit playing like a year ago and had forgot how great it is until I tried it again like a month ago. Its so much easier to make things possible to do in a MUD in difference to a grafic game, thus making it possible for you to do so much more than in the common MMORPG.

I hate MUDs w/ a passion. Too much reading and scolling gives me a headache. It's like playing one of those crappy Henati RPGs except w/o the basic pictures and others to talk to.

    I have played:
BatMUD - The best of any I've seen
    Dragon Something
    and
Some Star Wars MUD my friends play.

And imagine what all these MMO's would be like without the MUDs.  For someone to say they hate MUDs is the same as saying you hate MMO's.  MUDs started the whole computer RPG's starting with good old Zork I.

I still play AddictMud on my off days.  Since I'm struggling between MMO's, you'll find me there more often.

SnaKey, I really don't see your point. There is nothing crappy about any of the MUDs I've played and they are all far more advanced than most MMORPG, if not all.

That not saying all MUDs are of high quality, there is alot of crap out there. But if you find the right one there is nothing you can't do and there are often hundreds of people to talk to, there is always someone willing to talk since there is, as you said, that much too look at

And it makes the conversations more frequent and interresting since it is more natural to make written conversation when you are already writing.

As for the grafic part, is has it upsides and downsides, it makes it easier to make the game more advanced and gives less distraction from actual gaming and makes socialising much easier. But as you say, may couse some other problems and makes alot of people not even consider MUDs as an option in the search for the elusive "Best MMORPG"

JediMud (My very first - still play on and off, but mostly off)
    HoloMud
    Razors Edge (alas, has folded)
God Wars (Man, Pking was a blast!)

Lacking a graphical world, the physical tactics struggle i.e. making use of a particular zone's environmental features, but they can still be a challenge. For me, the imagination provides more vivid images than graphics ever could - except when I hit Thailand in 6 days time :P

MMOG's are just the logical step from MUD's.

To be honest, doubt if I will go back to MUD's again - MMOG's/MUD's are both time-sinks.

Materia Magica is a great mud! my favorite!! I was hopping theyd turn it into a graphic game because i think it has a great gameplay and character sets and such, I loved playing it! but ya that was about 3 years ago. Muds are fun, but sometimes its hard to not be bored by them without something cool to look at heh! image

Wow, god, I played so many I can't even remember much less list most of them, tho the 2 I spent the most time on, both coding on and playing on were 3K (3 Kingdoms) and Lost Wishes.

Oh yeah, I love how MUDs created the whole MMO world. But I'm not a book reader, I'm not a heavy role player, and I love graphix.

I don't care about GOOD graphix, but just something to look at.... wich is why I played BatMUD for over a month.... They had a ascii rep. of your surroundings, wich made it easy for me to navigate.
