SWG in Space

Well I used to be an avid SWG gamer and even though everything seemed to be broken I could not pull myself away.  With every new problem I experienced I would convince myself, "it's Star wars, they will fix it."  Well you can only try to convince yourself for so long before you come to the realization that it is just not a good game.  Therefore a few months ago I canceled my accounts.  I still try to keep up on what is happening with the game with the small hope that they will one day make it right.  <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Well today I read on stratics that the Space Expansion will be released at the end of May.  I can not help but have mixed feelings.  On one hand the space expansion is the portion of the game that I was looking forward to the most. On the other hand I know what SOE did to the land part, and how can I expect anything more from the space expansion.

From what I read they are dead set on releasing May 25th and that they plan to do the grand unveiling during this years E3.  They openly said that their work on the expansion is the reason for some of the delays with the updates for the current system.  So to me that seems to continue to say what SOE has always said.  "Once you buy our game screw you, we are only worried about bringing in more people."

For example: many professions have needed severe work from the start, most notably SMUGGLER, Droid Engineer, Chef, etc.  Instead of working no these professions they went and worked on Mounts, then Cities, then Vehicles.  All of which were done for the Christmas buying rush.  Then after Christmas they were to get back and work on ALL the profession, New content, and updated combat system.  Which they did for one month and only one profession (Chef patch).  Then they realized that it was tome to focus on Space and throw a little bit of time here and there to the current system.  So they nerf a few profession, and nerf experimentation etc.

Now I realize that SOE is in business to make money as are all companies.  However, why is it that in society today it is more important to just make money any way you can as opposed to delivering a solid product or service.   If you ask me SOE just got too lazy and took the fact that they could patch it later as a mantra for how they would deal with the issues in the game.  Why not do it one, do it right, and take as long as is needed to ensure you are releasing a product that is of the highest possible quality.  For the last year myself and the thousands of others have been paying $15.00 a month to beta test their land based game.  How many are going to pay to beta test the space expansion too.

So anyhow sorry for the long rant, just wanted to get everyone's opinion on the current and future state of SWG.  Personally I would love to go back to SWG, and I often look for any reason to do so, but I just don't think I could deal with SOE again.

I have just recently quit my SWG account too.  But my reasons are much different than yours. Yes, the expansion is coming out in May, and many who are playing SWG are looking forward to it. And yes, SOE needs to address problems in-game, but that will take a matter of time.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and here's mine:

I'm sorry to admit it, but I am a formal EQ player of 2 years, back when the game was fresh out in March of 1999. Liked it, played it, done with it.  I begin playing the other games, which were DOAC, AC, UO, Anarchy Online, Ragnorak, Eve Online, Lineage, and recently, FFXI.  There really wasn't anything there to keep me in the games; I saw them as clones of one or the other.  Finally, my wait was over and I played Star Wars Galaxies.

I have to admit, SOE has a bad reputation of putting out crap and then fixing it later.  But SWG had it all for me: 10 large planets to explore, PVP as a Rebel, Missions for Bounty Hunters, and a Dynamic economy.  Throw in player-controlled cities and many Star Wars theme adventures, and I played for 9 months solid.  The effect: loss of a normal life, grades in school fell behind, and excessive weight gain.

The side effects were bad, but I appreciate what SOE has done for the Star Wars Genre.  They will continually strive to make the game better for it's current player population.  All games take time to become better.  SWG will always be on the top of my list, and I won't hesitate to go back if it wasn't for family and monetary issues that I am currently suffering from. But I will be back.

This is my opinion, and you won't change it.  Too bad many people don't share my opinion.

Hate to break it to you Greywolfe, but that was an April Fool's joke on Stratics.  If you click on the story, next to it it says "April Fools!"  So no expansion on the 25th of May, sorry.  image

I'm playing Eve Online since last October. I have to admid, that is my first MMORPG and I have to say: great game. Well, starting to play Microsofts Freelancer and waiting for the SOE's Planetside, I decided to have a look what Eve Online is about. The beta was crap and the release version, too. I stopped playing it after a week. But now, I got hooked.

If SWG is going to space, finally - the only question still remains: what about my money? There are many concepts to get your game service financed, but one of the worst is the "let them buy our addon" idea. So, is Star Wars is offering some new planets and missions, but that's not what I am looking for.

I can't wait for the space expansion to come out ( Jump to Lightspeed is slated for Fall '04 image )

My TIE is gonna take down many a X-Wing (until I can afford a frieghter so I can transport my friends).

The Expansion should add a new dimension to the game (and I'm not talking the z-axis). Can't wait for the dogfights to begin and the fun adventures in space.

SOE is going to need to be very careful what they do with the econonmics in this game. With the new AV-21 schematic from the Corvette mission, I've seen many people charging almost 4 million credits for the deed. If they're going to introduce this into the SWG mainstream, they will need to make sure that people are prepared for it. I, myself, would definitely not like it, if I bought the Jump to Hyperspace expansion pack, and I didn't even have enough money to buy a ship from a shipbuilder (unless you are given a pretty basic one)

Another interesting note, is that the combat in space is twitch-based, which may cause a lot of problems, both for helping new players into space, and network coding, but I figure they're working on this, presumably as a pretty high priority.

That said, I think its going to be one hell of a cool expansion pack, but it begs the question, what next? Where will SOE lead us with another expansion pack? Is there anywhere else to go? Compared to a nifty space expansion, a few new planets isn't going to be all that grand...

    totally.
