The WOW "snowball" effect

Does anyone else play wow not because it is their favorite MMO, but because they have friends/family that play it or because they have made in game friends that they wish to continue playing with? It seems that one common theme on this board is that most veteran MMo gamers who play WOW do not view it as their favorite but continue to play anyway. For me I continue to play WOW because my friends all play it and my favorite MMOs (Shadowbane and City of Heroes/Villains) are seriously lacking in the number of players online at a given time.  Does anyone else fall into this camp?

I think that will happen in every mmorpg really. Hands up, who of you found the mmorpg genre because of a friend/relative? *raises hand*

I loaded and played Asheron's Call after my boss told me I had to try it.  I was immediately hooked and we spent most of our work days talking about new items, spell research, leveling spots, etc.

WOW is a great game until you get to 60 but I wouldn't expect an Eve fanboi to understand that.  Just curious but how many Eve fanbois are Star Trekkies?

So after reviewing the list of MMO's you've played and seeing you have never played AC it's apparent you have no idea what you were/are talking about and this was just another lame attempt by a dedicated Eve fanboi to take a stab at the #1 MMO on the market.

Because you have never played AC that invalidates your comment of WOW being a downgrade to AC.  Your extremely poor spelling invalidates you as a person.

I have a lot of friends that play wow, i hop on and play with them once in awhile but i stop playing when it feels like my brains have turned to mush and start oozing out my ear. Come to think of it they all get stoned while they play probably to curb the boredom, since i have quite getting stoned the game is even more boring for me than it was when i used to get high.

    playing eq2 and two worlds

Nope I've never played an MMORPG because a family or friend plays it, I always go out and look for new things on my own, it's usually me persuading me friends to play these games even though its not their type of thing lol. As for my family they don't see what I see in "running around killing things" as they put it. So I'm all alone with no friends or family playing with me, unless you count the friends I make in-game.

wow is just evidence on how crappy most mmo's really are.

Most wow players i bet, would play something else if there was something else better to play.

    sadly there is not.

I weep for mmo's, especially lately.

I don't follow I lead. I'm usually the one who gets other people to try games out. I got my dad started playing UO when that first came out, both my mom and dad playing D2, and recently guildwars. Numerous guildmates and friends to play and I've played A LOT of MMO's

Off the top of my head I've played or beta:

UO, AC1 & 2, EQ1 & 2, Neocron, AO, AA, WoW, L2, LOTR, DDO, SB, E & B, Vendetta Online, Jumpate, DAoC, CoX, GW, Matrix Online, Planetside, SWG, and WW2 Online.

Out of all of those I played at least a month in retail or beta.

I dont believe that, its way too cynical. People wont play games just becuase their buddy is playing it. There has to be some sort of fun factor to it. A friend of mine tried to get me to play DAOC several times, and I did try it on 3 separate occasions, but never lasted more then a week.

WoW is popular becuase it satisfies gaming needs of millions of casual players.

I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

I can relate entirely. I played Everquest Online Adventures for a year and no one told me about it or anything, I just read about it in some mag and knew I would enjoy. I then got my friend and brothers to play.

I've never played an MMO on the suggestion of a friend/family member. I always play whatever game I feel like trying out. Eventually I usually turn a friend onto it, as has been the case in EQoA, SWG, EQ2, WoW, and CoH.

SnowWhite and dwarves hands down. SnowWhite will flash them and daze them both since neither have seen tits IRL. After that the dwarves will just goto work on them.

I haven't spent much time on these forums [yet] so maybe registering an account to say this isn't really telling you anything you haven't heard before, but I'm always kinda surprised by the "wow is fun only before 60" comment. I'd have to say my most enjoyable times playing WoW have been around a year after hitting 60. And it certainly looks likes even more fun will be about two and a half years after hitting 60 (i.e. after having been 70 for 6-8 months.

The process of getting from 0-60 certainly had it's fun parts but they were nothing special, and I can certainly see why people who've only played the wow trial or played from 0-60 and not invested time into their character at 60 would find WoW dull. It doesn't offer much for that brief bit of play that other MMO's don't. But for me and for a lot of other people (e.g. many of the people who frequent theorycrafting forums like EJ), 0-60 is a pretty irrelevant part of the game, and figuring out end-game PvE content is the draw. And you really can't get that from doing anything in WoW other than raiding at 60 for several months at least, because content can only be figured out when it's new, and you're not geared to do new and challenging raid content unless you've got a raid group geared and experienced through months of the previous content. The initial raid content you can experience soon after hitting 60 is pretty dull and simple, and even that's complex compared to how basic the pre-60 PvE content is.

To clarify, I'm not saying that's something good or bad about WoW, it's just a fact about it. Unless you've actually done it (raided extensively after hitting 60 in WoW), you're lacking a pretty basic part of the understanding of what holds people to WoW, and hence aren't really qualified to say WoW is a bad game. You can talk all you want about the problems WoW's 0-60 levelling content has, but will continue to be dismissed by people who actually play what amounts to a different game - WoW's raiding forefront.

If you've raided a lot in EQ say, you probably know what I'm talking about, and the same goes for other raiding games. I haven't played other MMO raiding games myself, but I'd guess their raiders also don't really give much of a damn about the pre-end-game content.

For the record, I've tried out a bunch of asian mmo's and never really got into any because they never showed me much of interest PvE wise - not that I gave any of them as much of a chance as I did WoW though. EVE has many intriguing things that I might try some day, but the late-game PvE isn't one of them.
