I've ordered the echos pack with all the xpaks and I'm wondering whats a good starting guide for a new player? I'm an experienced MMO'er, having three 60's on WoW and 2 years experience on Ultima Online. I played Eq2 before for about 2months upon its initial release and I can't remember why but I quit it.

Basically I like to know a few things about the game I'm going to be playing, like whats a good starting character for solo'ing and also whats a good way to generate a source of income within the game?

Does grouping provide significant benefits at the lower levels? I have a friend who will be playing but past that I don't have any regular players to group with.

Thanks for any input that comes my way,

muttyhc.

On SOE's forums (http://eqiiforums.station.sony.com), they have a section called "The Newbie Yard" that has a lot of good guides stickied in it.  (And nearly every day someone asks about best soloing classes, so there are plenty of tips to read.  ;) )

Having played one character to 70, a handful to 30, and almost every class to 10/12, I'll say that the Assassin (my 70) is still my favorite but that compared to her the Illusionist is like playing the game on easy mode, hehe.

As for income, an untwinked genuine new player can make a plat on the broker in his or her first week these days, since high-level players are providing high-demand for low-level items now that Transmuting -- the munging of items to make adornments -- is in the game.  I started a Coercer on a new server less than a week ago and made 20g in one day, which is MORE than enough to keep me happy for a few weeks.  (Especially because if you're friendly and polite, at the lowest levels you can often get things like bags for the price of the fuels plus some extra, or trade raws for goods.)

Grouping is better xp and offers better loot unless you are farming green named mobs.  You will still want to solo/duo because the solo quests are a great source of AA.

There is no real group dungeon in the EoF zones until you hit 20 but Blackburrow in Antonica and The Wailing Caves in commonlands are both mid teens group dungeons. I find that you fly through these level quickly doing solo/duo quests so it’s pretty easy to skip these two.

For the 20-30 dungeons I really enjoy both Stormhold and Crushbone Keep but haven’t spent much time in Fallen Gate.  I haven’t been there to confirm it, but I hear Vermin Syne/Crypt of Betrayal have been converted to solo zones.  I’m not sure what is beneath Freeport but presumably if the dungeons under Qeynos are now more solo oriented so are the Freeport ones.

As mentioned above making money is easy these days.  Just set up a market board in your house, put a couple bags or boxes in the broker and sell all the treasured equipment & adept 1 spells you get.  These bring in 2-4 gold each and are fairly common drops.

Use handcrafted & apprentice in the early stages, it’s almost as good as treasured/adept and it’s a whole lot less valuable. Supply can be spotty at low levels but a 20ish crafter is easy to level and after that supplies are not so tight.  You don’t need to keep your crafting up to date past that if you find you don’t enjoy it.
