Barring a couple asian MMO's, after UO the only other attempted big name 2D MMO was Blackmoon Chronicles (screens:

I always thought there was a good sized market for a good 2D game, not to mention it would be much easier to make. Imagine all the features a well funded 2D mmo would have. With 3D games it takes alot more time and effort to create systems and areas. Do you think it would ever happen? Or is 3D the only way to go now?

3D technology is cheap now ... so why bother with 2D MMOs
I personally think 3d is the standard now, 2d is just cheaping out. Although you give some good points, there's probably a reason why you haven't seen any more 2d mmo's.
?played: Nearly everything.
?waiting: *Darkfall*, Hero''s Journey
I so wish that it's not the end.
I prefer 2d over 3d any day. I mean, I had much more fun playing a game like Conquer Online than I ever did playing all those rediculous 3d games such as Do, Gate To Heavens, Ferentus, ect. ect.
The only good 3d ever did for me was for FPS or at least FPview games.
Right now a commercial game like Silkroad is sitting out there in full 3d, with a huge server lag, constant glitches, and there is no necessity for it being 3d.
Now, maybe if other games in the future are not FPS or anything of the like, just click to attack-key to skill-click to attack, it would be great if they would offer it in both 2d and 3d.. (for people running less adequite machines in the least).
As far as content goes.. well... there's only so much in any game, 2d or 3d, as the constructor puts in it, and the gaming community adds to it.
2D is still strong.
i think trickster is some of the finest pixels on my monitor yet

No Userbar here, sorry to disappoint.
There's always Stick Online....
i'd love to see another good 2D MMO. but it won't happen.. not by a major publisher anyway. build one on your own! that's about only way it'll happen... and if it's good enough, who knows, maybe even get yourself a publisher.
me, i'm still waiting for the first 4D MMO......... what?
