The design, not the artwork, but the design itself.
Some peoples will tell you there is not enought stuff in CoH or tons of nada nada nada. Don't listen to them, simple is good. It become complex when it need to, not before. I will admit, I want MORE, a LOT more...but is that a flaw to be put on the game? It is a LOT better than any MMO on the design level. 1 lbs of chocolate is better than 2 tons of S***.
See, gameplay-wise, it is VERY fast, almost an action game, yet is isn't an action-game, it is a RPG. There are many little twists that ensure it is, for example, if you click on an attack and nobody is selected, it auto-select the closest enemy. If you are not facing an enemy and accomplishing an attack, the character auto-turn. If you are too far to attack, the attack won't launch; so you don't waste it. It isn't an action game, where none of these would happen. Everything is thinked in order to make a RPG fan happy...despite the insane speed of it all. For example, DDO doesn't have these twists...and despite following a rpg-guideline and been slower than CoH, DDO end-up been an action game rather than a rpg. CoH was well thinked, everything was done to make it a RPG.
Gameplay-wise: You can solo, to your heart content, more than in WoW, more than in any other MMO. You CAN and you won't be backward, you won't be weaker, you won't lack when comparing to a grouper.*
Gameplay-wise: It is the BEST grouping system I see, most incentives are there and peoples are grouping a LOT, more than in any other MMO, despite all it solo-friendliness, players group because they WANT to group. The challenge is higher in group and everything is bigger, more wonderful...it is magical, the feeling of succeeding in group is a LOT better than in solo, and you get to see all type of players.
Customisations: Best customisation, if you see another character similar to you, it is an achievement in itself, if you see a character identical to you, I say you copy an existing character in an IP somewhere.
Powers-customisations: Despite all it simple approach and simpleness, the wide variety of choices and how you enhance your powers make it unlikely 2 characters would be identical. Of course, another rock brute will be similar, but identical? I doubt it. Especially that it could have pick any offensive pool which would make it quite different from you. And there are also 5 others brutes set as well; be them invul, energy, electric, dark, fire...so a LOT of customisations. There are about 125 (more than that) possible setting for primary-secondary, then you add alternate powers and epic...err, the customisations is SIMPLE, yet complete and varied.
I would personnally would love a endgame about grouping, and another about soloing. Completely independant, but that is ME, what I want, myself. I don't know if it would improve the game...or not. Casual is good, even if I crave for more...and more hardcore stuff.
I could go on...but the design of that game is just awesome. It lack on gamebalancing (less now, but at a terrible cost they should not have accepted to pay in order to GB it) and on most of their goals they try hard to reach (like PvP, endgames and such), but it is very sweetly done. The game is not perfect, but it is at least 5-10 years ahead of the competitor...so I am not expecting any MMO to have a similarly evolved design before at least 2009...I wish I would be wrong and the other devs would evolve that fast, but I fear that I am very right on this aspect...and most devs won't be able to evolve, just like the majority in everything, only a minority set the mark and advance further.
Finally, I always dislike super-heroes...yet, here I am, a fanboi about that game...YES, the design is that great.
*: This point is mostly true, but it isn't the full truth, the IoPs and the HOs are mistakes which shaft "everyone", however they happen extremely late in the game and it was more meant as a test than actually implemented...and they hold on their current position for now. Peoples don't want to raid for the HOs, neither to be enforced to PvP for the IoPs...yet, to compare it, you would need to take PRE-kunark EQ raiding and remove everything except 1 loot item at random, which may not even be suitable for your class(so not really affecting you), to have a similar level of "baddies" enforced...so it isn't that bad...yet...to someone like me...it is psychological I fear!
EDIT: In summary, CoH is the contrary of how I post and explain my cases. It is clear, it is simple, it is well done!
- "If I understand you well, you are telling me until next time. " - Ren
-Extreme amounts of costume options, body scaling, Color, features, etc....
-Total freedom of Movement/Travel options and Fast twitchy combat.
-Doesn't focus on "l00t" or Gear, favors Skill and Planning instead.
imagine slotting your attacks with 3 dmg/acc (hamidons are dual purpose). this leaves ya with enough slots to go 3 +recharge. With this setup you can pull off 2 Energy Transfers within BU (thats a lot of burst damage). not sure if Ice/EM blasters can do this but I know EM/ELA brutes can thanks to lighting reflexes + hasten. yeah, sadly there's a big difference between having HOs and not having them. I suppose this same feat might be possible if you had the Force of Nature badge power instead tho. so im not sure how gear dependant this makes CoX. I'd much rather have HOs personally since those epic badge powers are on timers and last time I checked they are 'bound' to your toon at the level you get them (my brute cant use demonic aura in sirens cause she didnt get it til 50)
COH is a great game... for a weekend or perhaps a week. But it is not something that you will be able to stomach for long. It is the single most repetative game that calls itself a MMORPG. There are... get ready... exactly eight different missions OVER & OVER & OVER & OVER & OVER until you scream and Ctrl-Alt-Delete out of the stupid game.
For character creation, the above poster is correct, there are millions of costumes to make... millions of colors to choose, but it is all just a smoke screen for the fact that you are identicle to every other character in the game with you two chosen power sets. Don't get fooled by thinking that taking a few different travel powers or not taking a buff here or stamina there makes you any different. You aren't. You and everyone else in the game uses the same powers OVER & OVER & OVER & OVER & OVER until your 1 and 2 keys turn back into hydrocarbons.
It is fast... sort of. it is actuallt just lots of flashy lights over the exact same mission you did 30-minutes ago. A skilled porgrammer might actually be able to macro every single melee in the game from 1st through 50th level and only have to hit a single button.
Solo? Yeah, you can sort of solo now. That changed sometime since beta so the game has gotten much easier... such as the "Clues" in missions Blair at you with loud WHoop-Whoop noises and flash at you so that even your retarded neightbor couldn't miss them in the middle of a server crash.
This game is simplistic to an extreem that I have not seen since the days of Atari. If you play - bring a drool bib and no-doze.
"The reality of the poor in America isn't the difference between The Haves and The Have Nots, it is the difference between The Haves and The Have Lots."
I like the game because it is simplistic, no crafting, no farming, no spawn camping to get loot. One of the best things is that a casual gamer can be just as effective as a hardcore gamer. You don't have to spend all of your waking hours to get the sword of "I PWNZ" because beside HO's there really isn't any real loot.
Yes it does get repetitive, but I've tried EQII, EVE, Guild Wars, and Auto Assault. and I really find them more of a grind then COH/V because you have to go farm mobs to get drops. I also like the storylines and the history behind Paragon City, which most people aren't interested in but they are enjoyable to me, I've played the game for over 2 years now and I know I still haven't done all of the story arcs, but I am quite an altoholic so that may be my problem.
Did you read the story lines?
And no, your character is not exactly the same as anyone else- even assuming you choose precisely the same powers from the powersets, unless, of course, you copied their slotting arrangements exactly.
Yep. Eight.
Look at the walls, Look at the layout... same over and over and over again. My cat knows the layout of every single mission by now. Bumper-car style long narrow hallways in cave and sewers and buildings and on and on and on. Yawn.
I have played into the 40's and guess what?!?!?! it is the same. Only - you get more of the same ! Wow, not impressed. I have played everything but a tank (godz, that is a boring archetype!) and have discovered that IT IS ALL THE SAME.
Now, about the powers being somehow different??? You are joking right? You a-c-t-u-a-l-ly believe that you are the only one slotting three damage into your blasts (cough). You actually had a fraction of a chance to be somehow different before they messed with the enhancement slotting and limited it to three.
Trust me... this game has great graphics (BUT SO DO ALL GAMES THESE DAYS) ... and has exactly nothing else for depth.
I suggest moving along to a real game and leaving this one for the children.

You are FAST TALKING. This is 8 SETTINGS, 8 set-ups; that YOU experience (Not 8 missions, which would be like 8 zones in fact). I saw at least 11 INDOORS and more OUTDOORS, and I may miss some. These setting are build-up with different layers, different logics. There are at least 20 maps in the caves, including the one everyone find anoying with the multiples layers. The amount of LEVEL DESIGN is awesome.
Do I want more SETTINGS? Yes, but I rather have a FUN gameplay and a focus on what make a game fun...which is exactly what they do.
About customisation, let's take 1000 players. Let's take the MOST POPULAR SETTING. About 400 are brutes. About 100 are ROCK armors, 100 are invulnerability, 70 are fire, 50 are dark, 50 are electric, 30 are energy. Among these 100 ROCKS about 30 are Super Strenght. Now, what are the odds that these 30 players (3% of the population) take EXACTLY the same powers you did, 24 powers in primary, secondary and side? They will take differents attacks, different defenses; about 75% of the players will take some EPIC powers. Half of the players will take Fighting, half won't, that is in the secondaries power in case you don't recall. Point is, no player will be even remotedly identical to you, even if you lack imagination and pick the most popular cookie-cutter set. Players will not take the same defenses or offenses powers as you pick, some will refuse to take any power but the final GRANITE ARMOR, while some will take as many as they can.
If you want to trash the game, at least bring something vaguely believable...customisation in this game outmatch everything I saw in EQ, WoW, Ryzom (no customisation, you have all and just limit something to later)! Thank you for pointing out that 95% of the players will put 3 enhancements in damage, but how much in accuracy, in endurance reduction or in faster recharge? Not to mention, that personnally, I still put 5 damages on my main attack OR 6 resists in my main defense, depending on the character and I rarely see other doing so. But explaining to you the benefit of having 5 instead of 3 after ED is prolly going to be impossible so I won't even try.
When I blast a game, I blast it weakness, not it strong points! Blasting the strong points of a game just show that you don't understand it. A super Strenght rock brute is going to be similar to another rock-SS brute*, but they won't even be anywhere close to identical and if you change any of the primary or secondary, then the characters are completely differents. The level of customisations is plainly insane. It was better prior ED, but it is still great!
*As it should with over 125 possibilities, I didn't bother to count exactly, yet there are a LOT of different possibilities, 36 differents brutes alone, this is only 1 AT, 4 other to go.
- "If I understand you well, you are telling me until next time. " - Ren
And other than damage enhancements, the arrangements vary a lot. Such as interrupt time enhancements.
Customization is awesome in this game. Sure, there are quite a few games with customization, but not to the extent of CoH/V. Besides it being totally unique to the market, the customization on it is probably it;s strongest point.
What other game can you say you have literally spent HOURS making your charecter? That you went over every little detail from weight, to height, to nose placement to create the perfect looking charecter? This is the first game that has ever made me do that.
Besides the customization, the game can leave you yearning for more. About mid-lvl you start to loose the fun as custimization slows down a bit and you aren't getting as many new powers, ect. But the End game is coming along further then before and several new types of missions and new content is being added which really keeps me playing.
Also, the community is one of the best. For being one of the bigger MMOs out there, there are little to non fnuts around. I have ran into 2 in my 8 months of playing. There are very few MMOs out there that have provided me with that type of experience.
Long Live City of Heros!
The Good:
1) Character customization of course... but why put limits on it so you have to pay to change your characters later in the game? Why not make it so players could respec their look any time they want to? Never understood their logic on this.
2) Simplistic game play. Hey, some folks enjoy easy game play without much thought.... its light hearted, fun, but I found it got a bit dull for me...
3) Good player community - I found the people friendly and willing to PUG...and getting into a decent guild (corporation?) was no problem. Big props for this one.
4) PvP - seemed a bit unbalanced when I was there, might be better now. I sort of enjoyed the PvP..but could not stand the fact that Stalkers had a virtual one shot attack...who came up with that idea?
I have a couple of friends who have played COH/COV for 2 years and they keep going back. Me, I found the lack of end game to be a turn off..but hey..that was true of WoW as well.

WiccanCircle is absolutely right about a lot sadly. if it were not true I'd still be playing this game. It does not have much depth beyond the way magnitudes and how powers work. No crafting (yet), pvp hella broken, missions highly repititive. helkl jsut go read the user reviews on this game on this site lol. now that fanbois can't bump their reviews anymore the ugly truth is coming out now that each poster can only edit a previous post (can no longer bump a review to the top lol). ppl are finally realizing Cryptic only has like 1-2 programmers tops working on this thing which is a damn shame cause the CoX community is AWESOME they deserve much better treatment and so does the engine which is not bad at all. This is a theory but my guess is that they are all working on Marvel online. When needed, they sometimes pull a programmer to help with stuff. I pray I am wrong cause CoX deserves better than that
There's an article on Gamasutra from the original game designer that got fired / asked to leave. He was probably the only good designer there cause heroes are really aint too bad off. The orignal CoX design is not too bad. Anyway flash forward to current time where we have ED, many nerfs, and villains who absolutely blow at end game. they hired some newb off the streets to design those ATs (sry for biased statement but honestly he was not good- had poor understanding of CoX fundamentals). Villains get beatdown in pvp over and over at high lvls hence RV is a ghost town even on Freedom I hear (I did RV on Liberty so dont take my word for this please ask on pvp general if u subscribe). What moron at cryptic decided Villains should get those crappy epic powers they suck so bad its not damn funny. they absolutely suck when compared to hero epics hands down this is no opinion just go ask any villain that knows anything. corrupters got some half decent stuff bout thats bout it. suprised webnades not nerfed yet its the one decent thing for pvp my brute had. Trust me, pvp exposes the weaknesses of ATs. even if you do not pvp u should be alarmed CoX subs its in Arena where we all did tests to figure out what was wrong with villains at 50.
CoH/V could easily be the best game ever I think. ED really screwed up things though. lol makes no sense to 6 slot stamina and hasten now. at least give those powers some side effect that can be slotted. Thats poor game design, period. It simply makes no sense and it is broken now
Its a well known fact the mission types in this game are limited. Everyone knows thius just go post on General forum and ask how many mission types there are. Its kidnap, steal, assassinate the boss (kill AV), bank job, rescue (bout same as kidnap). Well hell thats bout all I can count and I ahve many high lvl toons. Maybe someone can take the time to list all the diff types. They do some of the task forces I have not done them all but its not many. A lot of them jsut reuse the same tiles
CoX was done on a low budget. it was made by a startup. I am amazed how well it has turned out for being down by a tiny team. Thats what I give CoX props for. I still miss it. It's still just one step from legendary just needs a half decent game designer to come in and fix it. I have heard it said that a game that has over 150k subs is a success. Well Cox has over that! So why cant they hire someone competnent and fix this game its really f---ed up. All the time _Castle_ seems like hes the only one tryiong to fix things. but one designer can only do so much. CuppaJoe was really great CM but she got promoted to Tabula Rasa which sucks for CoX cause the new one doesnt do anything. I tried to email her several times nothing man
In closing CoX can still be very good for people. I know many CoX fans that are diehard man. They will happily redo the same crap over and over and over. They are a good bunch of dudes. This game is seriously flawed. maybe all MMOs are. Hence, I think I still rated this game bout an 8 and I subbed for bout 9 months. So it is worth a try not saying its not. I just hate how they treat this game is my thing
[late edit[ do not take my comment about villains blowing in end game 'literally' I am speaking from min/max point of view. I dont want to mislead people.
1- Like you I want a LOT more.
2- I agree, there is not enought staff working on CoX.
3- Epics for villains are better than for Heroes. You are taking a PvP point of view. Most of the peoples in CoX are PvE players and can't care less about PvP. And in all the epics powers on BOTH sides, there is only 1 that is really good, PvE-wise...it is the pet. Now, if you play a corruptor and don't agree that PvE wise your pet absolutely rule, I don't know what to say. The fact that the staff, like you, crave for PvP is nearly irrelevant, they have a PvE crowd, like it or not.
4- In PvP, no hero can meet my main brute on par, on 1vs1, which agree with you, but not in the general sense that Heroes are always better. Electric brutes are, PvP-wise, able to beat the crap out of 2 scrappers/tankers easily. Again, I don't enjoy PvP and don't play it...and electric brutes are extremely rare, but...players often use energy damage, which is utterly useless against electric brutes...and they nearly never substain the endurance lost caused by their attacks. Granted, I don't care about RvR, nor does most of the players.
5- Instead of bashing overly for what could have been, you should appreciate what is and support it, in the nice direction.
- "If I understand you well, you are telling me until next time. " - Ren
Mayhems/Safeguard offer multiple objectives to get you more time on the mission, but they're really only just recycled tasks from the same tasks you've done 100 times in regular missions and none of them really allow you to avoid combat or sneak past it b/c they made the AI cheat on purpose.
Monster and AV battles are pretty much all the same too, it doesn't matter what tactics or attack chains you use so much as it matters that you have Lingering Radiation or some other Health-Degen type debuff. And the rewards pretty much match that level of inspiration. Most AV's never summon minions, and the few that do, don't summon in numbers that scale to team-size.
So yeah...Awesome Combat engine, Great graphics and Effects, Huge cusomization options.... the game would simply fukkin rock hard if it wasn't for the fact that the Gameplay has no actual purpose once you get sick of the miniscule opportunities that actually allow you to level up and "Progress" through the game. It's like a Sexy muscle-car that's Pimped out and waiting for someone to drive it, but then they dropped it in a Desert with no roads and no Gas stations. What the hell was the freakin point?
As long as I've played and am a die-hard superhero geek, I am agreeing with iller's and vajuras viewpoint. Maybe that is why I have such a hard time playing CoV equally as much as CoH. there is nothing really new 'to do'. New zones to see, new animations, new particle effects but essentially the same gameplay(and was said as much in reviews by other game sites....it was not villainy enough).
I do a LOT of repetitive tasks just so I can get that next power. After the 30s becomes difficult because you only get them every 3 levels. Working on my 5th level 50 hero, I can only attribute my longevity to this game from years of collecting comics and there are no other superhero games out there(already played Freedom Force). I really don't agree with the customization opinion some propose here having done it ad infinitum. If someone feels they are getting a ton of choices out of the game then that's great you are receiving more for your money but don't play mathematics major and try to present that as the absolute when comparing other MMOs. My outlook having played the game over 2 years total now is slotting is boring. I don't involve hours and hours in choices because there are '2036 more combinations than <insert MMO besides CoX>" but spend less than 5 minutes for any slot. Waaaay down the line when I have more influence, I may change something but overall, ever since ED, it hasn't made a huge difference and is not something that changes my gameplay so much I am having a totally new experience. The way some people talk here, I would say you could apply programs similar to Herostats to any game and make it SEEM it is such an involved process.
1- Like you I want a LOT more.

good points you sound like a vet so I want to first say I acknowledge your post as valid and it is not wrong. And yes bout 99% of CoX players is PvE. so let's say all you do is PvE then why? Why is it fair you be gimped while heroes run around enjoying near godhood? I wish I was wrong but you know its true when you see all your friends reroll heroes. I cant stand heroes I think they are too-goody and fake but even I rerolled one right before I quit lol
Players have proven Defenders VASTLY outperform their villain counterparts, corrupters. The problem is Defenders get Powerrboost as their epic power and Total Focus and other really excellent stuff. Rad/Sonic Defenders do way more dmg then sonic/rad corrupters, out heal, out buff, and outdebuff. Man it is INSANE. search for frosticus post on corrupter forum it is recent. They posted real math and backed it up wioth real data. It is not close. Defenders get +40% debuff bonus and it is unresistable. now pair this with Ice/EM blaster who do BEST sustained burst in teh game. So, go debuff an AV with a rad defender then put Ice/EM blaster on it. The AV (boss) is toast. Villains cant do this.
I had an EM/ELA brute so I know what u mean about those pubbies in RV. I will concede that point to you even though I know if a rad/psi defender comes along I know u do the same as I did. You run your butt off cause we both know rad defenders do -40% resist. so if they have a teammate its a near instant death for you. Thus, this is how villains get beatdown in Arena. In RV, villains are merely at a disadvanatage. in Arena, its a massacre lol. I've seen it with my VG (bedlam one of the top- they all rerolled hereoes last I checked)
edit- you can take almost any villain and do a head-to-head compare against its hero counterpart. I used corrupters for my example since their is data on CoX site that cannot be denied. but if you want go compare a Dominator against a Controller it wont be close either. dont believe that BS that villain epics compare to hero epics. it doesn't- the villain epics are all copy/paste across all the villain ATs and are pre-nerfed. some are decent but none make u gods like hero epics. Focused accuracy makes scrapper/tanker gods. Trollers got indomidable will, powerboost to boost magnitudes through the roof, and used to have fire mastery that allowed them to nearly rival blasters in dmg! Did you know an HO'ed out troller running powerboost epic power can chain mez even a Tanker into dust? I've seen it. Dominators can only dream of this sort of power. This is a well known fact on the forums jsut visit and read dont believe a single word I say just ask the vets like EL AJAX, Darkmaster, and Frosticus
[edit] sry didnt realize I was replying to Anofalye here he already knows how I feel and all this info I jsut posted I'm sure lol
My reasons for loving CoX:
-Living out the childhood fantasy of having superpowers
-Making the unique look for your chars
-No char in the game look the same, meet dudes and girls with loots of cool looks I just HAVE to SS
-It's simple, easy to learn and fun from level one
-I don't need to trade, action all the time.
-Easy to make a team (group), the sidekick system is awesome
-Fun roleplay setting
-Good storyarchs
Best costume creator
You get to play superheroes
fast action
good particle effects
nice community
great travel
fighting more than one foe at a time
Inventions(got faith in this one even though it's not out yet)
Police Band missions(don't need to go to Shadow Shard for missions anymore, yay.)
Cons
nothing BUT combat to occupy time
no economy(some like this, I don't)
little depth of play(see above)
some servers can be hard to find groups ever since same subscriber base was
split between two games(CoV as well as CoH)
too many nerfs
Performance isn't consistent
Very repetitive
stories are not engaging because you are affecting nothing
sparse music score (need inspiring battle music when combat starts)
Bases are lacking(even admittedly by the Devs)
Mixed
Ageia physics, some neat effects but it hasn't really changed the gameplay. Where is this technology

lol sry did not realize that was you who replied to me Anofalye. I've troubled you in countless threads now lol. I probably wouldnt have bothered replying cause you know my views.
Okay back on topic I'll psot why I loved the game while I subbed and why I'm tempted to return sometimes:
1) Community was the best really. Community isnt something I normally value but in CoX the folks eagerly group with you. If you can find people online they will usually always help you. unlike other MMOs where I got a quest and it would take days to get help (even in WoW I had this prob). In Cox I never had this problem I'm not lying. Had no problem finding good, helpful guilds either. even on liberty whicvh was not full like freedom
2. Character creation is unmatched
3. PvP. yeah its unbalanced and kinda horrible in many ways but it still ahd great vertical movement. The combat system is the best I've seen in any MMO. I have played some early E3 alphas of upcoming MMOs and honestly CoX is up there with them
4. role playing. Its fairly strong as long as u read the storylines
5. Teaming is a lot of fun always interesting to see what powers ppl can do when you're new to the game. Really, its very fun to some newbs flying around hitting the tanks with speed boost while ev1 else does their thing
no to be a complete downer, the character creation is really neat, although being able to change specific body parts would be a good improvement, cause although there is a lot of customizable features, many characters still look the same.
