Was wondering about EQ character models.... free trial.... etc.

I came back to check out EQ again. Surprised to see that you still carry a weapon in your hand instead of putting it away on you side or back when not in use. Is there a setting or something to allow this? This classic should add more modern avatar animations. What could be so hard about putting an unused weapon away on you back or side? I seriously expected to see more modern toon features.

Also, in passing, could anyone tell me if the free trial has access to the full game? And if trial is really good for 1 year? I started my trial today and it said it's good till 1-17-2008, after which time I will need to upgrade to a full paid subscription... lol, that can't be right can it?

The trial only allows you to stay in the cave area actually and you are not allowed to leave. Atleast thats what it was like when I used it 1 or 2 years ago. This game has been out since 1998-1999? How can you expect "modern" character animations. They already redid their character models in 2001 so its been quite some time since anything has been done to them. But I agree with something you said. I absolutely love games(such as eq2) where you equip your staff or sword onto your back or stick your daggers in holsters on your hips whenever they are not being used. I think its such a realistic concept considering if you are walking around a city, you are not going to be duel wielding a giant axe and a blade in both hands. But anyway, It would be a nice thing for them to add to the game, and this is going to sound shallow but if that was implemented, it might actually just bring me back haha. Played this game from 2001-2005, on and off. Still miss it a bit.

There was a time when they started to add new animations to the 2001 character models because I remember when they added a few to the gnomes and they were pretty good.   The next day those were yanked and nothing was heard about adding those new animations again.  There was also a time they were working on a different set of character models but that was dropped as well.

You know where I could find any official or any other info on those dropped models? Sounds interesting, something I'd like to look into.

I think the EQ world still holds up well graphic wise. The thing that is going to turn people off who never played it is the way your character runs everywhere with this big weapon in hand... may sound silly, but they should update the character models.

The game holds up very well otherwise. Sure, the oldish character model made me feel all nostalgic but the number one concern for the health of the game should be keeping it feeling 'modern.' The goal should be to attract (and keep) new players coming to check out the granddaddy of MMORPG'S. That weapon thing is an instant turn off now days.

    New players = healthy.

haha, we need to communicate this idea somehow to the devs, not sure exactly how but oh boy I'd come back if it was implemented.  Although I heard they revamped downtime and your mana and hp regen incredibly fast now, haven't experience that for myself so that could be a turn off, who knows.

There was something in the way the Luclin models were designed.  They used something like vertices to do the moving and animation rather than polygons that other games use.  All those vertices use more computer power and thus a lot of people had a lot of lag being around a lot of other characters and mobs when using these.  There was plans to change them but with faster computer able to handle these models better and redirecting resources to EQ2 these new models were dropped.

There was some buzz about the drakkin models being a trial run for newer, better models. We'll just have to wait and see what happens with that. I do like the drakkin look, but I really hate the way they move. (Just a personal opinion there.)
