go down to - 4.15.2 and make your own decision. You can solo to about lvl 10 after that it is pointless to solo past that if you want to get anywhere. YOu can solo but your not going to get anywhere so i dont really see it as an option. To be honest why do you want to solo in an mmo anyways?
In the early levels (1-10) yes but, after that it would be extremely slow solo for 30 minutes. Also, the game tends to focus on groups 18-20+ on. I'll be honest though, this isn't the game for you if you just want to spend 30 mins every day, especially solo.
You can get to MAX level by soloing and doing nothing else but solo during your play time. It will take you double or triple the time of someone who group to get to the same level.
You will have to pick the right class, some won't solo much.
Anyone who group/tradeskill/raid will be a better soloer than you and solo a LOT better than you, even if they merely solo once per year!
Is that solo friendly? IMO it is not, but I guess to some peoples it is. Solo friendly IMO would mean that best soloers would be soloers, and this is not going to be the case, anyone will solo better than you. As a soloer only, you will be among the weakest player on the server; with no hope of getting out of that gaming ghetto, since after all, you don't group/tradeskill/raid.

yes you can solo , alot of ppl think it gets harder in the later lvls, but i consider that just more challenging. I really think its important what class you play and how familiar you are with the maps. Make alot of toons from differnt parts, and you will have plenty of quality 30 min gameplay days. Personally i love to solo, and will be going for atleast lvl 30 mostely solo.
30 mins in vanguard is not enough enven if it was in a group instead of solo play. This the main reason why I am not playing the retail version. I just bought a house and work 40 hrs a week plus and only have about 1-2 hrs a night to play and I dont think its enough time to dedicate to this game to get the most out of it. It sucks becuase I really like the game. The grind is a lot harder then wow or eq2 etc but not nearly as bad as lets say a asian grinder type game. I think to get the most out of the game I would look to spend about 3+ hrs a night playing.
You can solo just fine. I admit that I have only leveled to 12 so far, but have had no issue soloing mobs up to lv 15 + with a cleric in crappy armor.
Also take into consideration the fine crafting game and promising diplomacy game. Both promise content equal to the adventure side. It's really three games in one.
I would suggest picking a healer class if you wish to solo alot. Cleric is good now...heavy armor and great heals help ya muscle through lots of content. It takes a bit longer to kills stuff...but you survive much easier.
I love to solo also and have had a blast in the open beta. I soloed EQ1 to 64 and eq2 to 70 and 6 more over 50. Dont let that stoop you from enjoying this game. Some like to have the best of everything and need others to help them out. I think its more of a feather in your cap if you can find a way to solo all the way out. BTW tradeskills is a great way to spend some of that time.
Well.. Guess I'll pass up on vanguard then.. And for that matter probably all mmo's.. Which is a slightly depressing thing to say considering the most fun moments of gaming I have had with mmo's.
Why? If you average 20 hours a week playing it costs you less than twenty cents an hour over the course of a year. If you enjoy playing mmo's.....play mmo's. That's the best value in the entertainment industry.
It's solo-possible in the adventuring sphere, and I suspect may be solo-friendly in the other spheres. However, in my experience so far, it is way more friendly in general to those who group, even casually.
I think solo adventuring will be more of a tedious grind than group adventuring. Even casual groups appear to have a great advantage in completing solo quests, and the quest rewards in my experience accrue to all who have the quest. For example, if you group on a solo quest to kill 10 of something, each group member with the quest will receive credit for each kill, and each group member will receive the full quest reward. The incidental loot, of course, is split. I was trying to solo some L10-L11 mobs on a quest as a L9 yesterday, and I was dying quite frequently, so that I could not make real progress toward the completion of the quest. A friend told me that she breezed through the same content in a group, at the same level as I was attempting it.
Diplomacy is fundamentally individual play, but there is a wrinkle called "civic diplomacy" that evidently requires multiple players. I'm not sure exactly how it works. The easiest implementation would be linked individual interactions which must be completed by different players. I have not pursued diplomacy far enough to find out about that, because I was oriented to trying out (and, ahem, "testing") combat behavior and performance.
Crafting is fundamentally a solo activity, but with interdependency over many finished products. Again, I have not pursued this as extensively as adventuring.
Harvesting is what I would call it an advanced form of looting. You can solo, but the benefits are supposed to be greater if you group. I liken it to looting, because the typical payoff when killing a mob is, first, the "loot sack" prompt icon, second, the "harvest" icon. You use the "skinning" harvesting skill to get the post-loot resources from most mobs. However, I found that some mobs require other skills to harvest from. Treants, for instance, are harvestable by those with the lumberjacking skill; this is quite reasonable, in my opinion. I used the unexpected benefit of my harvesting specialization to grind both adventuring and harvesting skills on treants yesterday, and raked in a fair quantity of saleable merchandise. It was certainly more fun and interesting than camping trees. I imagine that certain mobs could require the use of other harvesting skills to extract the maximum value from them, and also provide ways to avoid camping nodes of stone and metal.
Hmmm wonder why people call soloing a tedious grind?
The point is its a game. You are supposed to have fun in a game. Soloing is fun, tradskills are fun and Diplomacy is fun. If Im gonna pay money Im gonna have fun.
I don't find solo play a tedious grind at all. I find grouping to generaly be a headache. As a gamer dad ...soloing gives me the freedom to go afk at a moments notice. I don't have to wait for anyone and I don't have aggro issues often associated with grouping. I don't care if it takes a bit longer to reach high levels. I haven't found anything I can't solo..eventualy....all I have to do is level up a bit more and then I can solo group oriented content. I prefer to solo unless I happened to be grouped with good friends that are patient and experienced gamers. ( and my kids are asleep =P ) What's the rush anyways...?
lol i'm so up and down right now. Half of me sais buy the game at the release and the other half tells me not to.
Do you think that I would be accepted to a group if I just wanted to play for 30 some mintues?
If you are only playing 30 minutes a day than you can expect to solo the game. It will take you 30 minutes just to find a group. All I can reccomend is plan on soloing till you find a good size casual guild.
I think you will need at least an hour for group action...maybe two even. Think...it takes 15-30 min to find a group..then 15-30 min to decide where to go...then a good 15 minutes to get there. You can almost gaurantee someone going AFK during that time span..anther 15 min. Right there you have 1-1.5 hours before the group has even begun to actualy fight anything substantial. This is in reference to standard pick-up groups. A good guild can provide a much smoother grouping experience.

Excellent question, and I'll give you an example.
Last night, I logged in an L9 druid character for an hour before I turned in. Previously, I had attempted several solo quests that feature L10+ mobs, and made very little progress apart from further perfecting the corpse grab. To improve my rate of progress, I had decided to reach L10, with it's reward of more powerful spells, before continuing those quests. Since I had pretty much exhausted all the quests suitable for my playing skills and character level in the region, I decided to kill things just to gain experience. So, I found an area where the mobs were L8 - L10, and slowly advanced through the area, engaging each aggressive mob I encountered, watching my experience indicator edge ever-so-slowly upward for every successful combat, and ever-so-quickly downward when I was unlucky or clumsy.
Is this not the very definition of grinding? Tedium is subjective.
Is your question can you have fun solo-ing? Yes, crafting and diplomacy, lend themselves very well to solo-ing, some classes solo a little better in combat than others, but all seem viable.
If your question is can you advance in 30minute chunks faster than all the people who group for hours at a stretch & have better gear than them. No, you probably can't unless you're incredibly skilled.
Largely it depends on your personal definition of "Get Anywhere" - if that means having fun, a big world to explore and so on then you should be fine, if it means compete for advancement, with groups of people playing cooperatively, as a solo entity, then no, solo won't bring you every reward as fast as those who don't only solo.
The main point is will it bother you if other people play more & do/have more?
If you want to solo then game is not for you. If you solo, your exp will be penalized compared to group exp. If you are a masochist and want to solo then this game is for you! : ) Especially since 80 percent of the content is grouped and raided and you'll always be behind the eightball soloing so to speak. Kinda hard to give exact numbers but I'm sure it'll take you a good long while to max a char solo vs. grouped. I would think at least double or more (more than double is more likely) the time solo than group. With mmorpgs the exp curve is always changing but I expect it to the be worse in the first few years.
I recommend Guild Wars if you want to solo. You can solo almost the whole game, get equal gear to those who group and there's no raiding with no monthly fee as well. Also I hear there's no raiding in Ryzom so I'm gonna check it out next and I think there's a free trial on mmorpg.com.

This guy has just decided to set himself free from the crap of most mmorpgs. You should be applauding him. He doesn't want to solo and be second class. He'd rather take his money somewhere else. Bravo bro.
Why anyone wants to solo in a multiplayer game is beyond comprehension. There are so many better open ended single player RPGs out there that would be cheaper and more suited to your style of gameplay. The point of MMOs is interaction with other players and the classes themselves are built around group tactics that use each classes individual strengths to compliment each other.
These games are supposed to be derivitive of pen and paper D&D and when is the last time you and the DM just sat down and played a campaign just the 2 of you?
