It never ceases to amaze me..... Why anyone wants to solo in a multiplayer game is beyond comprehension. There are so many better open ended single player RPGs out there that would be cheaper and more suited to your style of gameplay. The point of MMOs is interaction with other players and the classes themselves are built around group tactics that use each classes individual strengths to compliment each other. These games are supposed to be derivitive of pen and paper D&D and when is the last time you and the DM just sat down and played a campaign just the 2 of you? I will bet never.....
You are amazed because you assume you know what a mmorpg should be and you accept that like it's some holy gospel or something written in stone. We are free beings created to be free. We are free to make any kind of mmorpg we want, we as free beings have that control. Problem is you want others to conform to what you think a mmorpg ought to be. Let it go bro, our world is a very big world. There's room for many different kinds of mmorpgs or many different rule set servers within a mmorpg to suit various styles of play. Our imagination is our only limit. We have just scratched the surface of what a mmorpg can be. You'll see
WEll there are alot of reasons why someone would want to solo...
1) soloing does not rob the social aspect of the game.. it hinders it yes, but it is still there.
2) People may like grouping just sometimes they don't have the time.. in that case, they would want an alternative.
3) Most 1player rpgs do not have the same layout and format of an mmo which some people like..
and the list goes on...
(and yes, i want to have fun generally. I don't want to be a god in the game or anything. I don't need to be advancing as quickly as everyone else.)
As long as you care about how much there is to do & having fun doing it, as opposed to comparing yourself to the hardcore and what level of gear they've accrued then I don't really see why solo-ing is a problem in any MMO.
VG has a really Massive world, with a capital M, plenty to explore and lots of dynamics to get involved in - I don't see why you couldn't go the sandbox route and decorate your home, run a crafting business, explore the seas on a ship, fly around the world doing diplomacy etc, & do any other of all the possibilities without having to be grouped much if ever, you just won't be getting stuff FIRST!!!! completely solo, if that doesn't matter - no problem.
Do a little research on classes to findout what will suit you, - I'll just throw a few out at random, not suggesting only these classes solo well.....
Bards travel really fast & quite safely with ability to levitate & invis & run v fast &mob crowdcontrol features (charm mezz lull) etc
Shaman have lots of flavours of spells including some very handy utilities, including a slight bump to mount speed as part of buffs - they solo pretty well afaik, solid dps, heals, enemy melee slows and cannibalise their own HP to renew mana during combat etc etc
Disciples can heal themselves pretty effectively by using combat chains specials & (hidden) combinations as by producst of their damage moves
awsome dude... now, I need some good solo classes.. All the ones you listed seemed pretty good.. I initially wanted to start a monk (but without heals, that doesn't sound like a good soloer) then cleric sounded like a good solo and now Bard looks appealing.
20% solo, 60% group, 20% raid are what Sigil have said and are aiming for.
Grouping is a lot more fun but there is plenty of solo stuff to do.
Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS) Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve
It's definately the case where you can solo fairly well with most classes up until about level 10. After that it becomes a detriment to try and solo. You CAN do it, it's just a matter of how long you want to take fighting/grinding mobs that give you exp without killing you.
Well.. Guess I'll pass up on vanguard then.. And for that matter probably all mmo's.. Which is a slightly depressing thing to say considering the most fun moments of gaming I have had with mmo's.

This guy has just decided to set himself free from the crap of most mmorpgs. You should be applauding him. He doesn't want to solo and be second class. He'd rather take his money somewhere else. Bravo bro.

You sir...are ignorant. There is nothing second class about not maxing out your character as fast as possible. Go back to playing your xbox as I think you play mmorpg's like its a Halo match. People with playstyles like you seem to encourage are a cancer in a mmorpg community.
I speak from the perspective of a 35 yr old father of 3 and have learned through my many years of gaming that it is the journey that counts...not the end result. When you grow up ....I hope you reflect on these words. You will then know what I am talking about as I am sure they make no sense to you now.

this is exactly why they will not be getting my money
this was not their original intent from what i understand
but i guess this was just easier to accomplish in the time they had
i would have put up with the early, buggy release (specially since i have a computer that can handle vanguard) but apparently it is almost pointless to solo after lvl 10
and to those that think MMOs are just for group people - what do you think MMO is? everyone playing their "own" style is contributing to everyones experience of the game
I'm not necessarily a pure soloer but i'm usually playing different hours or longer hours than RL or virtual friends - and i have had some pretty bad experiences with pick-up groups
so i'm told i should go play a single player non internet game - well, thank you for trying to limit my fun but when i play an MMORPG i'm contributing just as much to the community of the game as a grouper - maybe you just bought that fancy new shield i made or i ran by and tossed you a buff and you emoted thanks - think about it for a while and if you are over the age of 15 you will probably take your blinders off and say hmmm
well, here's hoping Sigil gets "their" blinders off and decide to get quite a few more subscribers

I'm not sure what you are referring too..but it sounds like you think you can solo play in VG and have fun. Fun for people is purely subjective, but I found my mostly solo experience to be enjoyable. I had no problem hunting and leveling...even in some crappy gear. The crafting and diplomacy aspects of the game show me great promise.
Joining a good guild geared for the casual player ( much like the ones I run ) can help you alot too. Guilds of casual players help eachother out and often can keep most of the members geared up real good as we all pitch in crafting for eachother and such. I know I don't require any of my members to go on guild raids or do anything they don't feel like doing simply out of respect for their time online. I've had long time members that barely said a word in chat even. I've always thought it's more about what a guild can do for it's members than what it's members can do for the guild. It's worked well so far to the tune of hundreds of happy members over the years....something to think about before writing off VG.
