Why Do We Play?

KuzzleKuzzle Member Posts: 1,058

Maybe it's just me. I feel that people play games to get away from their horrid lives. Maybe this is too harshly phrased. People get bored of their lives and want something else, so they play games. MMORPGs allow people to do this without giving up social interaction, or to have social interaction in some cases. What are your opinions?

I know I'm going to get lots of post where people say how they like their lives and that they play just to pass the time and other crap like that. I don't care. I can admit to playing games to get away from the real world, maybe so can others. If I have to be here physically, at least I don't have to be here mentally.

You get into another world, you escape this and enter the <insert game name here> world, you get a second chance of creating your very own life. It's living out something that you wish for yourself through the character you have created, letting out your inner child if you wish.

Just like when you were a kid and wanted to be like luke skywalker or another random "hero" from the movies, in this new interactive world you have the opportunity to have the same capabilities as this/that hero, but you have to get them yourself, and the personality is your own.

So in some way, it is an escape from life, but I'd rather call it a release or living through a fantasy/dream that you've had, in the end it depends on your point of view, a crack-addict might call it escape, whereas a normal person would call it living out a dream/fantasy.

Dreamers can find their way by moonlight and their only punishment is that they see the dawn before the rest of the world

It is a time killer that is also a test of skill.

I play games when I have a free minute wih nothing else to do. Rarely do I try to make time to play video games. I play video games between times that I am not doing something else. If I call my buddy and make a plan to go scuba diving at 11:00am and I have nothing to do from 9:00 to 11:00, I will play a video game.

The only times I am actually planning to play video games is when I am having friends over to play some multiplayer action and drink.

As far as MMORPG's go. My main reason for getting into them was for playing with my little brother who lives 1000 miles away. We use to play from about 10:00 to midnight or 1:00am (or later). Times when I usually had nothing else on my plate anyways except watching a movie or reading. I am very critical of MMORPGs nowadays though, and have not found one I like in quite a while. Come on Guild Wars ::::01::

I play to get away from the cycle of my horrifically boring life. I do the same thing every single day of my life and nothing hardly ever changes. But when I or any of you guys log onto what ever game it is that we play we are no longer ourselves. We no longer have to wake up and go to school or work or have to abide by a bunch of stupid rules,(ok, yea there are some rules but you know what i mean, don't be stupid). To be perfectly honest if I could some how live my current life behind and live as the character I play on Asheron's Call I would, in a heartbeat, without a second thought. We play because alot of our real lives kinda suck and with need something else or we'd lose our friggin' minds, or at least thats why I play.

I look at it as kind of an escape.  I go to school full-time and I am raising two young boys.  I dont really get a chance to get out much because of this.  Games give me a chance to do something with other adults without actually having to leave the house.  I would probably go nuts if I didnt have my video games.

This kind of like the gothic topic general area. Mainly you could play because of life of no friends or life is boring, or play for fun just for the joy of it even with a good life, or you mainly play because their isn't anything to do around. I say MMORPGs area a good way to get in touch with the social life and imaginary part of your brain to help with life.

    Well said!

In my case, I do less RL stuff, but the reason is in RL, not in the computers games. image

I remember some times where I was organising Changelings events...long gone is such a motivation!

I am a banality driven gamer freak I guess!  But it came from lack of interest in other stuff, not from overjoy interest in the computer(althought the interest in the computer is not bad and by no mean in a lacking situation).

    But anyway, Tasky imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage

I feel you express what I feel as well a lot better then I would so I just put more
