Level Caps

What is everyones opinion on capping levels in games?

Is it a good thing or a bad thing?

My 2 penneth is that it is a good thing, providing that the cap is sufficiently high. For example in SWG it took me about 2 month to max my commando and then i had nothing to play for.

Muahahahahahahaha

2 stars sucks :( i want my 5 stars back!

Caps are good. If there is no cap, then eventually you can grow beyond all of the content in the game...

I would like a game that had so much variation in Race/Class/Skills, that it could be fun to strat over and over...

Some people might say, "Nooooooo!!!!! I don't want to have to threadmill through Black Burrow for hours and hours again..."

But, what if leveling was quicker? So, you only spend about 2 hours in BlackBurrow at the most and level past it. If you leveled quicker, so you didn't use up all of the low level content your first time through it, you could enjoy the low level content 4 or 5 times.

This is just a thought I had, that might make a game more fun for a longer period of time... Most people hate to start over because they have used up all of the low level content their first or second time through it...

Lvling shouldn't be a huge importance in a game. I think that lvl caps are good becuase of New Players being at a huge disadvantage and becuase they'll have to keep creating stronger monsters or the game will become boring if your a god and kill everything with one hit. Besides I only got to a lvl cap once in a mmorpg. image

SWG is very similar to this, and the characters are all very different, but the problem is that i tend to get attatched to my characters. i levelled my commando fully in about 2 months or a bit less and after that i got very bored very quickly and didnt really want to create another one

I'd rather fast lvl to reach cap and then you can try out other races/classes and then stick with the ones you prefer.  In this case it hurt less when you want to delete your lvl 50 char to switch realm aka DAOC

image     Lvl caps are dfinately usefull but at the same time as long as the exp amounts u need to get to the next lvl keep growing then eventually it would be impossible to lvl but if you had the time and effort you coudl do it.  And to prevent the boring factor is to make such creatures as Dragons so powerfull that no matter how high a lvl you are they are still very difficult.  So the fun never ends it just gets harder.

What  about making a game that is just as fun at level 4 as it is at level 60....problem is, most companies seem to make the lower levels nothing but a hassle to have to go thru. The fun dosnt start till you reach the "end game".

Levels and a cap need to exist IMO, devs just need to learn how to make the whole game fun, not just the end game.

I agree that leveling shouldn't be the most important part of the game. The enjoyment of playing that game and having fun should be the #1 aspect of any MMORPG. The problem is a LOT of powerlevelers think it's critical to be at a high level to see most of the content. So they spend like the first 2 months just powerleveling and once they reach at least 65% of the cap, then they will start doing quests and adventuring. The problem with powerlevelers is they tend to focus more of the level cap, then anything else in the game. Once that cap is met, many don't want to play any of the other features in the game.  If getting to the level cap is hard, they will complain that they can't solo to the top level fast enough. Sorry, but in a MMORPG game, you're really not suppose to hit L100 in under a month. Developers know that you'll most likely quit when that happens, so they make it hard purposely. This will usually force people to try other elements of the game, like crafting, questing, exploring and selling/trading. People who don't like at least 3 or more features in MMORPG games shouldn't play it. Level cap is important to give people a goal and provide ample rewards for reaching certain levels. It should also unlock more content to keep the game fresh and moving forward.  I think most level caps should start at 100 and most forward about 10-20 levels every expansion.  If done correct, it would take a casual gamer at least 1.5-2yrs to reach L100 and a power leveler about 1/2 that time (9-12 months).

A good example is FFXI. As a casual gamer I've reached L26 in about 6 months. So I'm right on track to reach L75 in 1.5 - 2yrs. Most powerlevelers are at L50-60 right now. So by the end of the year they will have reach L75. FFXI is a perfect example of balanced leveling. I know people complain about not being able to solo and get decent XP. You can actually solo, but your XP won't be a lot. I link after L40 XP should be higher since even easy mobs are extremely tough for a solo player. Still, most power levelers won't level to L75 in 3-4months without having a decent group and a LOT of playing time on their hands. That's for sure.

Level caps are good, they give the game an edge in a way, if there was no level restriction you'd have characters that keep going and going. Plus when they have level restriction it's only to keep players from getting to insanely high levels and surpassing everyone else that isn't involved in let's say xp chains and whatnot, but that's a whole other story.

I totally agree with waveslayer and XanderZane. If there was just as much fun and role playing to be had at any level then powerleveling would not only be less useful but powerlevelers would miss out on content by doing it!

Gaining levels adds to the excitement of discovering new abilities and improving old ones but it should not add to the excitement of role playing and questing other than bringing new content in an MMORPG.

In order for any MMORPG to be properly balanced though, I think that eventually there has to be a level cap; it is unrealistic to have players being able to become the most powerful beings in the world and be god-like. It certainly would be a pretty boring place anyway.

Also, personally, I prefer the level cap to become hard to achieve so that the experience with a character can be prolonged but in so long as, as I said, that there is plenty of content and adventuring to be had along the way - at any level. If people like to try out lots of different characters it would be less of a problem if it was just as much fun playing low level characters due to the game content, especially if quests and the like are very character dependent as they should be. Then once an affinity was established with one or more of them, that player would play them to higher levels.

Ultimately it would mean that the MMORPG which invested the time in such an endeavour would have players staying longer and less powerleveling going on too.

Players main goal in a RPG should never be levels, but to advance their characters. This can be done through leveling, or anything else the individual enjoys. A person shouldn't worry about caps unless their goal is to tweak a character, or such but then it differs from every other player.
