Well, until you point me in the direction of a better virtual world, you have nothing to offer me.
{ Mod Edit }
Now, to the OP yes, every fact you stated is true, however. In the last 3 months or so a great deal has changed. Mostly because one of the coders finally convinced KFR of the advantages of having a test team to help find errors and crashes. We have been doing just that, the Infinite login is our latest victim, we are continually at work, and the amount of posting in the E&C forums on the RV website is cut down dramatically. In fact, there are NO reported errors or bugs (that I know of) that don’t have a solution found and ready to patch in. however its becoming increasingly obvious that KFR has a big patch coming again, and wants to put it all in at once. (Of course, it’s a surprise so the community testers get to sort out all the bugs after release, again. But that’s the price of not having the NDA he said he was going to make up)
So yes, there are problems, but the only real big problem is that the dev team is way over its head, there are far too many things for 5 guys to do alone, and they are doing far better than should be expected. I myself will give them time. What any of you reading this do yourselves, is totally up to you.
I feel almost like they should have come out and told everyone hey we're a team of five people trying to create a masterpiece. The game is not finished, please support our unfinished piece so the underdogs (us) can create a game that everyone would love.
Instead of trying to advertise that their game is awesome... I think being honest would have prevented people from complaining about paying for an unfinished game, had it been stated that you are paying to help us create this game, and so the priveledge is yours to play whenever you like.
I think when you release something unfinished and state that the game is ready for launch you lose 90% of your popular player base because no one has patience now days to wait around, and since promises are unfullfilled you see a huge decline in the over all population of RV.
However the game is far from dead, as the developers (in 2-3 years) finish the game I think the players will do enough advertising to bring people to the game it will be revived, but until the time the game gets finished it's just assumed that the game will have no player base, and each patch will take decades to complete due to lack of funding.
This is just my personal opinion and view of what I've seen on how the launch of RV went.
Now I have played Roma-Victor since beta, and I will tell you nothing but the truth here, while there are many things and reasons I play the game there are many reasons it appears to be on a total downfall and why I would Not recomend it. lets begin with the basics, PVP- battles of 7vs7 are damn near impossable due to lag, you have to march men across one at a time when changing boards to a new area, or you will certianly get disconnected, so generally Moving armys beyond 10 and trying to attack with a simillar number beyond 4 will lag badly no matter where you are. the Grind, RV has one of the most boring grinds in the world, currently the new technique is stabbing a fork, you have to repeat this action with a non responding player about a million times untill your sword or spear needs repairing then come back and do it again, by the end of just one weapon mastery you feel like a monkey trained to do only one remedial task, and with the sparse and small population finding a partner becomes a chore. AS, Actual Stupidty, now perhaps that is a litte harsh I mean the AI will kill you like a laser guided missle, but not only is this AI ushally powerfull (the lower end ai will require a mastery and about 30 out of 99 dodge) but they will often Warp to your position, use no vigour (which is basicly attack points so while you can get 12 swings or a time of running they have no such restrictions) they pass straight through walls you cant they have absolutely No pathfinding and ive even heard of them attacking after death, and unless you kill a animal you get no loot. Factional inbalance, Romans simply have it all, they are protected from each other, can craft alot of their factional clothing unlike barbs, are packed into the arena as that is the only place you can train, they have controll of the iron mine ( you cant conquer btw) with two aux gaurds so the barb minners have to work on the fighters schedule. Population, sometimes this really does leave me thinking is this a MMO? unable to handle any large scale combat, and the roman town will average 7-20 people lately, the barb starting village will average 0-4 people online, and the other village also will have around 0-5 people, the towns feel ghostly and are literally hours apart with boards inbetween, and Barbs being sparse and low in numbers doesnt help matters. Elysium, you may have read the interveiw , well there is no mythical creatures you run up a hill talk to a guy and spawn at your hometown, thats about it. Content, there have been some nice new additions to the game ill give them that like the new shields, but after all this time players still cant craft any of the stone buildings, lorica segmentas and many other stuff, in fact 90% of the population I would say runs around in their loincloths hows that for immersion. Working your way to the top, this is becoming increasingly difficult even if you are in a guild, very few will get far without contributing, and it isnt cheap to max profitable skills, you will go through many weapons and tools repeating the same remedial tasks to gain skill points, and even if you do manage to work your way up, there will always be that richie rich that has bought everything and controlls the market, we call him augir, he has about 4 alts, has bought all the NPCs merchants to sell things for him (theres a cap cant buy no more) and he owns about 50 houses, why? because he put aload into the verm and RB had no cap, I belive its what you call buying yourself a crown Crashes! Crashes! and CRASHES!, Crashes will follow you everywhere in RV you will leave elysium and Rv.exe!, in the middle of combat and Rv.exe!, pretty much standing round not doing a thing you get a RV.exe, and well its been like this since beta so all the error reports in the world I doubt are gonna help now. Devs dont deliver, they have promised so much from storylines to elysium puzzles, yet they fail to deliver on the most basic of things, they will say somethings in and it isnt, like the first patch we have listed says Pugios are now ingame, there are No pugios able to be crafted still.
Yes, the lag is horrible. You're right. There is no disputing this.
Yes, the grinding is totally unrealistic, boring, and rather retarded. No dispute here.
The AS is correct also. NPCs are overpowered, warping, and if they dont use vigor, then also bullshit. The no loot thing is total crap, as this is supposed to be a REALISTIC game.
On the faction issue - Romans are supposed to have it all. Barbarians are just that. If you want to play a Freeman, you have to accept that you are Free. This means no Romans telling you what to do, but it ALSO means no Empire to assist you. Its that simple.
On the population issue - Personally, I think the game is dying. Publicly, a lot of people went to other boards so they could build and so forth unhindered. Now that animals are in, its even more entertaining to travel, since a wolf WILL eat you.
On Elysium - You are correct once again. Elysium is laughable. The game-stopping bugs had to be worked on FIRST and FOREMOST before implementing any afterlife stuff.
On crafting - I dont really know whats craftable and what isnt, but the loincloth bullshit has got to stop. There should be HARSH penalties for running around nearly nude, such as diseases, virii, and other such crippling effects.
As much as I complain about the VERM system (I dont like it), I will say this - Augir isnt much. Yeah he owns this and that, and yeah, he has 23987834 alts (Which is RETARDED in a roleplaying game), but no one cares. The only thing it gets him is flak from people wanting him to clean up his clutter. And by the way - its supposed to be hard to get money without paying for it. Otherwise, no one would pay for it.
The crashes are abundant, but being solved. This is something that the devs have to work on before anything else. No use putting in Chariots if you crash every time you do something.
On the Devs promise's - The bottom line is this. They have to fix the GAME STOPPING bugs before they can add GAME ENHANCING content. I mean, its not like they sit around and say "Well. This is whats going to go wrong when we do THIS". A lot of bugs hit them without warning, and they had to fix them. It was so bad, people couldnt even log on.
I will say, however, that MANY promises are going into the crapper as RV is becoming more and more developed. Perhaps the dream of a realistic MMO is just that, and Red realizes that to get $$$, you have to give the carebears their candybars.
Invincible NPCs... No full looting... No perma-death (My idea, naturally). Crucifixion for exploiters, etc, instead of CRIMINALS WHO DESERVE IT. I see someone kill 4 Romans, I think "He should be cruicified, no?".
At the end of the day RV is still a great game to dream up stuff about. You THINK its going to be awesome. You THINK its going to be realistic. However, one finds that the lack of roleplaying, realism, and immersion leaves the game with what it is at the surface - meh graphics, bad interface, a damn /who feature that shouldnt even be in the game, and generally just a poor example of a video game, let alone an MMO.
Hopefully... Itll get better. It HAS to. Its the last game of its kind.
It's safe to say Sempiternal has hurt this game more than helped it. Annoying-developer-posing-as-fanboy-talking-smack makes folks not want to play your game.
I think Semp, just likes the game. And he is right to, it is a great game. Just lacking in many areas that need fixed. IMO mainly the economy, and crafting times.
Who wants to throw money down a dark hole , and hope you get a return for it? Rich folks can, but average players will not.
IMO, that and not graphics and bugs is what made people move on or quit this game. I mean the combat is fun the crafting is in depth but everything takes too long and cost too much to be enjoyable.
Skill gains should be looked at again too. (supposed to be grind free...)
Anyways I am not bashing this game because it is a good game, (potentialy) I just hope they start looking at the facts layed out in front of them, and address them. (SOON)
Hahaha, very humorous post.
I, myself, am eager to try out Roma Victor. It sounds neat!
There have been plenty of battles that were fought lagless.http://www.roma-victor.com/community/bb/viewtopic.php?p=237182#237182
the Grind, RV has one of the most boring grinds in the world, currently the new technique is stabbing a fork, you have to repeat this action with a non responding player about a million times untill your sword or spear needs repairing then come back and do it again, by the end of just one weapon mastery you feel like a monkey trained to do only one remedial task, and with the sparse and small population finding a partner becomes a chore. You are not forced to grind all the stuff up, it's not our fault you want to be a l33T guy, although a 17s/sm/d/b/p guy may not kill much, you are not useless, unlike most of other games where you can't even play with your friends because you are 6 lvls lower...
True
There have been many debates over faction imbalance and the only real disadvantage barbarians have is their low pop. All the other points can be countered with disadvantages of the Roman Sides.
I'm sorry, no teleport or cars in the Roman age. Oh, and it never takes me more than an hour to get anywhere.
Elysium, you may have read the interveiw , well there is no mythical creatures you run up a hill talk to a guy and spawn at your hometown, thats about it. Absolutely true.
Content, there have been some nice new additions to the game ill give them that like the new shields, but after all this time players still cant craft any of the stone buildings, lorica segmentas and many other stuff, in fact 90% of the population I would say runs around in their loincloths hows that for immersion. Platemail is craftable, chainmail is craftable, several swordtypes including falxes and falcatas are craftable, handaxes are craftable. Daggers are craftable. Stone buildings aren't craftable; and that sucks.
Working your way to the top, this is becoming increasingly difficult even if you are in a guild, very few will get far without contributing, and it isnt cheap to max profitable skills, you will go through many weapons and tools repeating the same remedial tasks to gain skill points, and even if you do manage to work your way up, there will always be that richie rich that has bought everything and controlls the market, we call him augir, he has about 4 alts, has bought all the NPCs merchants to sell things for him (theres a cap cant buy no more) and he owns about 50 houses, why? because he put aload into the verm and RB had no cap, I belive its what you call buying yourself a crown That is highly incorrect. Most people that are in a guild haven't spent a penny yet. >And Augir isn't that mighty, yes he has a lot of alts, so what? He can't play 12 character in the same time. Yes he has built like 20 roundhouses, so what? Yes he has a lot of indoor projects now, so yes, he can outproduce everyone else, but it's not as if it makes your actions insignificant. You don't need to be a master of xxx to be useful. Again. Crashes! Crashes! and CRASHES!, Crashes will follow you everywhere in RV you will leave elysium and Rv.exe!, in the middle of combat and Rv.exe!, pretty much standing round not doing a thing you get a RV.exe, and well its been like this since beta so all the error reports in the world I doubt are gonna help now. When have you last played? Have you updated your drivers as they have said 20x? Have you sent in Error Reports. I haven't crashed in weeks. They fixed the elysium crash.
Devs dont deliver, they have promised so much from storylines to elysium puzzles, yet they fail to deliver on the most basic of things, they will say somethings in and it isnt, like the first patch we have listed says Pugios are now ingame, there are No pugios able to be crafted still.
Pugios are craftable. They didn't say Pugios were in then. I don't know or you have a problem with reading, but they said 'hope to get that in, in patch 1.3.6 they would release soon'. The actual patch notes did not say Pugios were in.
Final points: I don't particulary like this game, all the clicking hurts my fingers so I hardly play it anymore. But there are hardly any games that can even match the fun I had in this one. My tips for those who want to try it out:
Sadly, even in it's poor state, this game is better than any MMO currently out. Sad for all the other MMOS that are out and just crappy copies of WoW with fresh coat of paint.
This game has taken a huge leap forward, far as combat and community driven content.
But the lack of balancing for average players has slapped them in the face, and will continue to do so untill the make the nessairy changes. If they dont make the changes pretty soon it will be too late and the games reputation wil be completely ruined, leaving no chance for the community to bounce back.
I stil have hope for RB to turn RV arround, may not seem that way from my posts , but I am simply stating the facts from mine and other players experiance in the game, so that they can see where they need to put their efforts. Reguardless of wether of not they care or listen I am gratefull for the game they have put out, as it may very likley effect future games comeing out, providing me and others with a game we can enjoy down the road.
Not as of 3 weeks ago. Havent logged in in a while dont want any reason to waste the ses that I have currently untill prices are reasonable.
I did see a few new faces tho, probably the new grass and the new weapons and armor they added, but that wont keep folks for long. We need substantial changes not cosmetic, to turn this arround.

Much of that is your opinion. Yes Roma Victor needs further development; what game doesn't?
But, do you know of a better virtual world? I'm all ears.

Well done, papacapjack - you've gone from Red Bedlam brown-noser to realist. Unless, of course, you were a closet realist to begin with.
Interesting summary of the game as it stands.

Did I miss something, the entire Dev team was listed here
